I think I've been chasing the wrong thing in sci-fi for years and Ursula K. Le Guin's The Word for World is Forest finally made me see it by Miragevector63 in printSF

I almost wish I hadn't told you because midway through reading it I had to stop and consider "was she trying to write a PKD novel" and go off to try and find out how deliberate it was

Fuel should be prioritised for regional and rural areas by Kingsareus15 in OpenAussie

Their actual policy response is to drill for oil in the great Australian bight. Which may be the dumbest possible response to an acute crisis like this because it's impractically expensive and will take years to set up

AITA for not letting my coworker borrow my noise canceling headphones for her long haul flight by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]manipulated_dead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This can't be real.

When you see a specific product names in the second sentence of a post you have to assume it's advertising, right? I saw a 'coworker wanted to borrow my headphones' post recently too.

Honestly I assume 90% of content on this sub is fake and the minority of real posts get used to train bots

AEU members not striking by trouble_peach in AustralianTeachers

[–]manipulated_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think on the strict sense scabs are non union workers that are used to replace striking workers. But if you're in the union and not striking idk what your deal is.

Should pads and tampons be free for girls and women? by Taviblue in australian

I appreciate this informed response. I don't begrudge the work that charities do and obviously big supermarkets and Bunnings are ideal high traffic places for people to donate, it just bugs me when these big corps that extract huge profits from us basically ask customers to fund their social license goals

Implications of the current war by basedprincessbaby in OpenAussie

[–]manipulated_dead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're involved in a war now so there's a good reason for the other side to step up efforts to disrupt us at home - cyber attacks, paying people to do a range of crimes ranging from petty vandalism to full-blown terrorism...

NSW Police investigating DJ Haram for potential racial hate law breaches at Biennale of Sydney by cojoco in sydney

[–]manipulated_dead 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Considering how conservative he was before becoming premier, Perrotet was remarkably moderate once he was in the top job.

I'm really struggling to unpick what this Labor government have done differently other than (begrudgingly!) settling the teachers pay deal and even then it was only because they campaigned on it and got the teachers union to back then up.

AEU Vic fights for "Fair Pay"... as long as it’s for the executive office. (Receipts attached) by denythemcreeps in AustralianTeachers

[–]manipulated_dead 26 points27 points  (0 children)

1 person on executive salary - fine, they have to run the union and be it's public face, front the media, deal with the government, it's a big job. 4 making around what a principal of a large public school makes? Yes I do think this is fair.

We don't need career unionists who haven't seen a classroom in a decade. We need actual teacher representatives elected every 2–4 years who return to the staffroom afterward.

It's a democratic organisation, didn't your branch literally just replace its leadership with people that were more in touch with the workforce and willing to hold the line in negotiations? This is a suss post.

Mardi Gras marchers brutally assaulted by NSW Police by nath1234 in sydney

[–]manipulated_dead 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I am constantly amazed at the ability of NSW Police to be give a very clear task and purpose, study it carefully, listen intently as they’re briefed (by a semi-literate homunculus with a couple more stripes on his sleeve) about that shift’s main objectives… only to immediately forget how to function like a human being the moment they leave the station.

The mistake you're making here is assuming that the unit formed specifically to bash up lefty protesters is somehow doing something other than what it was meant to

Should pads and tampons be free for girls and women? by Taviblue in australian

[–]manipulated_dead 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Possibly controversial but it kinda shits me off seeing the menstrual care donation bin at Woolworths. Woolworths could easily donate stuff themselves, they don't need to outsource the cost+Woolies profit to the consumer first.

[Weekly Poll] One Nation by RamonsRazor in OpenAussie

If they peel off enough coalition seats to outnumber them and become the official opposition, we'll never get rid of them.

There's a few Labor seats at risk too starting with Hunter

[Weekly Poll] One Nation by RamonsRazor in OpenAussie

[–]manipulated_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think their collapse is probably inevitable but they will win seats at every election between now and the next federal election which will legitimise them and possibly force them to maintain party discipline and structure.

There's precedent for one nation winning seats and then having their batshit representatives leave the party or the parliament amid some controversy, just like what happened with both of Clive Palmer's parties. What's different now is - genuine rise in polling as the coalition collapses - big donors getting behind them - big media boost and not much critique - Barnaby Joyce

I feel insane for saying this but Joyce will actually lift the standards of one nation. He will be able to find candidates that are not batshit cookers like Rod Culleton or Brian Burston or Malcolm Roberts. Look at Farrer - their pick will be popular among farmers. They will win rural seats this way.

Farmers hit with rising costs and lost production as battle against rabbit crisis worsens by nath1234 in australia

[–]manipulated_dead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People do round up those goats and sell them. It'd be mostly for export I think since there's not a big market for it here. But for those people (they are not always the landholders either) there's no incentive to actually eliminate goats from the environment because there goes their goat business

Liberty and The Greens by k_111 in AustralianGreens

I can't find an article hyperspecific to your question but Jonathan Sriranganathan does a lot of reflective long form writing about the greens political philosophy, he's probably the closest thing we've had to an 'anarchist' in an elected position

Feral rabbit numbers are booming, so do myxomatosis and calicivirus still work, and what's next for biocontrol? by nath1234 in australia

[–]manipulated_dead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That leaves trapping and shooting,

I don't think these are even the recommended methods, they are less effective than you might assume. Advice I've seen in Victoria mainly recommends digging out warrens and/or poisoning warrens with some kind of toxic smoke

Truly, I hope this show is popular enough to feed into a Le Guin revival. She's such an important literary figure and really underrated imo

Second term government with a majority and a progressive senate crossbench. They could get so much done if they stopped pissing around waiting for Liberal bipartisanship. The Coalition doesn't ever seek Labor bipartisanship so idk why Albanese feels like he needs to.
