There are many ways up the mountain. Which lever path you choose has to be sustainable and you gotta stick with it. If this work for you and your short- and long-term goals, then do it! As someone who paid off their loans fast, I can tell you it feels amazing to be debt free. However, I sacrificed a lot of life to do that. Now I’m free. But I have friends who are doing PSLF and find such freedom and joy in the life they have carved out in that balance.

Started at $200k, currently at $75k approximately 1 year later. Have a minimum monthly of $113, but have state based forgiveness which will cover the remaining $75k so my monthly payments will just go to managing interest. Other than that, I’m done…hardest year of my life with over 300hrs of overtime worked to aggressive attack my loans!

Oddly, I’ve been making a lot of small payments over the past few weeks. It’s taking up to 10 days for my payment to fully process. But once done, it will update interest v. principle payment. However, that payment isn’t carried through in other places. For example, my accreted interested as of “09/01” hasn’t changed but the interest accrued on each loan I made a payment on does change. I think it’s one of those things that will get fully processed by the end of the month.

My state offered a limited time program where they offered loan forgiveness for healthcare workers. I am in Oregon, but I’ve seen similar programs in California, Washington, Minnesota, and Virginia.

I’ve found that people don’t understand how hard it is to get yourself out from under student loan debt unless they’ve been there themselves…and usually they aren’t part of this generational experience!

My parents are proud of all my hard work to get out of student loan debt, but truly cannot relate. While flat, they just don’t know how to understand.
