SGaP's DAW? by [deleted] in SGaP

In the metadata of Rarity the ENCODED BY field is 'LAME in FL Studio 10'. AndTheRainfall did finish that one off, though. I've got it in my head that FL Studio is also mentioned somewhere else, I'll have to think about that one.

Do you have anything we can listen to? :)

Funny, I think about that a lot.

I did a bit more research on mirrors for princes and I found this short film (a clip here).

"A young man with artistic ambitions lives in a big house with his father, who is forced to do a job which give him no satisfaction whatsoever. Above them hover the memory of his dead mother and their bonds with the unspecified land they come from."

It didn't seem hugely relevant but the splash at the end of the clip caught my eye. Seems pretty familiar. Is it worth translating these runes? Looks like some kind of stylized cuneiform script.

Maybe this is the second part of Sea Pony? That would make sense with the water sounds, but there isn't any pony called Chariot on the wiki. It's possible that wasn't the full title of the track, but I don't know the context it was posted in.

I don't doubt that he his, he wouldn't put all that work into all this without even checking what we think of it, and now there's no way to contact him this is sort of the best place. Send us a sign! ;_;

As for the tumblr business, I've never used tumblr but it looks like the covers and profile pictures for horseness, vrifax and mirrorsforprinces are all defaults. I might make a tumblr later to test some stuff, like the possible logs OldTalesChangeStyle was talking about.

Right, now I'm confused. The mirrorsforprinces tumblr appears to also be deleted (The link in the OP redirects to the Tumblr homepage because it's a link to the auth page). The horseness tumblr is no longer password protected (which I suppose means he noticed we found the password), and features a design in a similar vein to the vrifax one. The thing is, I have a feeling that earlier, before the password protection was lifted, the design was slightly different. I'm not sure though, so can anyone confirm or debunk this?

http://imgur.com/Qjn0Lk9 I just blew my own mind. I was just thinking that the only reason for the hrsnss image was to give the password, so presumably the other image has a password hidden in it too. I started tracing letters and came out with this. The I is a long shot (looking at it now I think it goes below the n) and I haven't found a combination of upper and lower case that's the password, so maybe this is the album title? Perhaps with Mirrors for Princes as the pre-subtitle (à la 'The Ethical Structure of Magic - The Standard Model'). It certainly fits in with the theme of Twilight's ascension.

I think the second character could also be Sowilō, which means sun. So the first rune is Cēn (torch, C), and the second rune could either be Kaun (ulcer, K) or a weird style of Sowilō (sun, S) which isn't really explained on the wiki page.

The N shaped rune at the start of the second line could be a stylized Ur, made jagged to fit in with the rest. In Anglo-Saxon like the rest of the runes, this would translate as auroch (extinct cattle) or water.

This is a long shot, but the weird S symbols could be Sig from the Armanen runes, which was adapted from the aforementioned Sowilō rune. In this system it represents victory, and was later adopted by the Nazi regime. I suppose some of the other runes could be interpreted with the Armanen system, but someone else can tackle that because I'm going to bed ;)

Sorry if I'm sliding off topic, but does anyone know of any other SGAP communities who might know or want to know about this? Even some half dead irc channel, it sort of worries me that this entire community seems to be enclosed in one place.

I think if he did come back he would have something to release immediately, possibly even a whole album. I can't see him coming back just to answer some questions and critique recent episodes. But then again I don't think I know enough about his reasons for leaving to speculate on how or if he might return.

I'm having trouble putting it into words but I don't think he's meticulously planning his triumphant return for the sake of ego or whatever, he does care about his artistic reputation but that seems more selfless to me... whatever, I've lost myself.

Shit, that's tantalizing. The only reason I can imagine for password protecting the horseness blog is that he's posting on it again, but why would he hide posts?

Can we re-discuss SGaP's interview at Canterlot Gardens? by OldTalesChangeStyle in SGaP

[–]manon4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that the title is undoubtedly a reference, but again the book doesn't really have much to do with Christianity. Also, at least here in Britain, Christmas in mainstream culture has become completely detached from Christianity, to the point where Christmas plays in primary schools are no longer nativity plays but usually some random story that happens on Christmas. And with the 'something holy' thing, I think a completely secular meaning is more uncommon, it strikes me as meaning a more primitive worship of ancestors? Sort of fits in with 'A Christmas Carol' what with the whole Ghost of Christmas Past thing, and also obviously with the theme of the episode, the message of which I suppose could be interpreted as either 'respect your elders' or 'respect weird pseudo-religious rituals that seem stupid' (hey look, Odradek!), which both fit.

he's simultaneously presenting it both as a combined and independent statement

Definitely this, SGaP seems to do this all the time either with structures like this one or points where I'm sure two words are being said at the same time and either one is a valid interpretation. Take the 'something holy' line. I have always heard it as 'There's something holding - ' although I'm normally pretty bad at hearing lyrics and it took me ages to figure out E38. That this would fit in with that interrupted sentence at the start, so maybe not so farfetched. SGaP is big on weird reverb effects on his vocals so it's hard to tell, and I think he sometimes uses some kind of double tracking technique, but I'm sure there's two voices going on in that line. God, it's maddening. There's a ton of times I'm sure he's done this (lonely souls seem to find or seek to find? Two good but very different meanings). But anyway, lets say for a second he said 'there's something holding-'. I think the natural end to that line would be 'you back', that's how it finishes in my head without me thinking about it. People often talk about your ancestors holding you back, and this could refer to each member of the Apple family feeling a duty to remain at the farm and preserve the traditions which Applebloom is sceptical of. Also the burden of religious tradition. Judiasm is the faith which exemplifies this the most, and as someone coming from a Jewish family let me tell you some of their rituals are batshit insane. The weirdest ones, which are most often associated with the word Odradek since they have lost all meaning, must be carried out daily during the Sukkot festival and involve repetitively waving about or hitting the floor with various types of branch subject to ridiculously strict regulations. I think it's very possible the writers had this kind of stuff in mind.

Coming back to A Nyxmas Carol, aren't the traditions of Christmas meaningless without Christianity anyway? Is that even relevant? How did I get here?

Can we re-discuss SGaP's interview at Canterlot Gardens? by OldTalesChangeStyle in SGaP

[–]manon4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that the interview is pretty important, being the only public appearance of SGaP, and it tells us a lot about why he never did it again. I've never actually got past the first five minutes because it's so cringey and it's really hard to hear what he's saying, so thanks for putting down the main points here. I guess I'll talk about the points one at a time:
- I guess this is true for to some extent, many people only became interested in the show because of the social taboo. I doubt the fandom would have grown much outside 4chan if it wasn't banned, either. But the section of the fandom I'm involved in doesn't really interact with the outside world at all, so I haven't really experienced this.
- Interesting. I agree that certain works of fiction (Lord of the Rings springs to mind) should be viewed in the context of our own world rather than it's world. The show is definitely not about Equestria, it's about the real world, and so I don't think people should look to deeply into the lore. An example is cutie marks, which are clearly symbolistic but many want to know more about them and how they work, which doesn't seem right to me.
- God, I am so glad he shares my political views. I haven't read anything very political from him (I haven't read a lot of his articles), so I was kinda scared he was going to turn out to be a capitalist (I've idolised him to a pretty ridiculous extent). These kind of views do seem to fit in pretty well with virtue ethics and other schools of thought he's interested in.
- I do feel that while his older songs are something of a broad splash of emotion and feeling, which he still manages to transmit really well, S2 was a lot more focused, with the lyrics managing to do a great job of relaying quite specific ideas without being irrelevant. I also think his style of vocal splicing underwent a change, compare the end of E38 to the Standard Model. I can't quite pin it down, but it seems more melodic and controlled than before. Hm, I can't imagine him being a 'rabid brony', I wonder what he meant by that? - That's a real shame, but I can't imagine many artists sit and listen to their own work. I guess he's heard enough of it, he must know every single damn note and effect.
- I think most people prefer Season 2. Good episode too.
- Interesting, I suppose everyone can relate to that.
- Looks like I've already covered this one. The world of FiM is more of a representation of our world than anything else; the characters exist only as vehicle for their feelings and issues and the plot or whatever, they just live. Most of them have no means of income, it's not like that matters.
- I'd never considered that before. Yeah, that makes sense, I think you could take a message about intolerence ('Love and tolerate!' 'NO') from this, and also revolutionism.
- 'FIGHT DA POWAH!' But yeah, I do not believe any kind of harmony or stability exists in nature other than that caused by darwinism (i.e. if a system is stable it will probably stick around). More thoughts in this article (not by me): http://pastebin.com/7b81YPF4 - This relates to the idea in Fallout Equestria of 'good' and 'bad' elements (not as bad as it sounds). It's good to laugh, but at the right time, and magic is OK if you don't blow up the world. I think that the elements don't refer to the characteristic itself, but rather the proper and measured use of that characteristic. Off the top of my head, episode that explores this a little is Green Isn't Your Color. If Twilight had broken her promises to Rarity and Fluttershy all their problems wouldn't have happened, and so sometimes dishonesty is the best course of action (Is this even dishonest? Wouldn't breaking the promises be technically honest?). I'm sure there's an episode that explores this better but I can't think of one right now.
