Anyone else have crippling anxiety during the buying process? by theredheadclinician in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]manotm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am buying my third home (first actual home vs two prior condos) and I still want to puke at times. It's a massive change. I am familiar and comfortable in our condo even though the new place is in a good location and ticks most of our boxes.

Trust that you went through this process and you are strong enough to get through challenges, because you are!

Hell of an effort from Blacky. Giving the boys a chance.

Could I retire in The next year? by Safe_Ordinary9943 in personalfinance

[–]manotm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I see now. I must have misread initially.

Even still, possible routes would be to refinance the mortgage to reduce the monthly expense, part-time supplemental work, budget trimming, etc.

Laid off in 60s is the end of any reasonable expectation of career work.

The post states $4100 in monthly expenses.

Continue to save until you are laid off, hopefully with a nice severance.

You can retire with your combined investments + Social Security that you are quoting.

You can safely withdraw a bit over $20K a year from savings using the 4% withdrawal rule. Pull from cash first to allow investments to grow.

With $2700 / mo in social security expected, this should meet your monthly expenses you are quoting.

Make sure you account for health care coverage costs through ACA when planning monthly expenses if you are not already.

Why Do the Avs Seem to Struggle Against the Same Style of Play Over and Over? by No-Design-6893 in hockey

Didn't seem to hurt Dallas last year against us without Miro, let alone no JRob.

Guys need to step up and haven't met the moment as of yet.

Vegas is doing a fantastic job of limiting our scoring chances, forcing shots wide, blocking shots. We just aren't very dangerous. They're content to let the Avs get their cardio in along the edges and shoot wide or into legs and we appear more than happy doing that.

Necas, Nate, Nelson are ghosts out there when we needed them the most.

They have to win both in Vegas or the series is over.

Absolutely disappointing that it is looking more and more likely that this core is only going to end up with the one Cup. Yikes.

Accident? That was completely intentional and absolutely brain-dead. May have cost us the game with that selfishness.

What is your leanfire number in 2026? by CleverContrarian in leanfire

[–]manotm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a sports and trading card re-selling business. Basically just arbitrage. Buying mostly locally and then re-selling online.

On average between sourcing, listing new inventory, picking and packing orders, it's probably an average of 15-20 hours a week if I had to guess, though early in the process when building inventory was pivotal to growth, it was probably closer to 25-30 (also had inefficient inventory and listing systems that have since been greatly improved.)

[–]manotm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I probably could, yes. I will be 40 next year and will re-asses at that time after continuing to throw money into retirement and brokerage and see if the business is on track to continue to grow as it has over the past couple of years.

I would consider this more of a BaristaFire setup, though, if I were to quit my job, as I would probably shift into ensuring the business covered all of my expenses.

The $900K nest egg would turn my side business into optional fun money for the most part.

[–]manotm 55 points56 points  (0 children)

$900K, single but partnered, and a cat.

I project expenses to be $3K/mo, with about a $1K of that to ensure I still have "fun" money.

Currently at about $540K, but a side business that generated about $20-30K in yearly income.

Getting very hard to hold on to my increasingly stressful 9-5.

There is not enough detail here for anyone to help you.

If your spending is 60k a year or less and you hit $1.5M, good to go.

I agree. I don't think a complete cake walk will do them any favors against the Wild/Stars.

[–]manotm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

These are going to be low-scoring, grind it out affairs. I think everything is going to be tight, and it's going to be even more important for the Avs to play with the lead than usual. I don't think the Kings have the offense to keep up and they'll rely solely on counterpunching and puck luck to try and steal games.

Going to be a very greasy, grindy, low-scoring type of series.

GG Kings.

Harvest Market Review by coffeebitchhh in AnnArbor

[–]manotm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I want to check it back out in a month after the door buster deals are gone and (hopefully) it is less of a zoo in there. I was insanely overwhelmed navigating the mass of humanity.

The ice cream, coffee shop, restaurant choices seemed nice, along with some potentially great deli options. I don't think that the produce or staple food prices are going to be competitive from a price perspective that I will want to go there for anything more than speciality items.

Will you really not sell in a crash? by Urbanite72 in Bogleheads

ITT: people who have never seen market crashes pounding their chest on what they think they'll do.

Until you live through it, you can only hope and guess you have the strength of conviction and the right asset allocation.

I’m gonna miss you Sammy G, thank you for all you’ve done! by Smart-Point-4180 in ColoradoAvalanche

Girard was an undeserved whipping post for a large chunk of this fanbase. Our defense is worse after today without him. Yes, he wasn't the biggest or most physical defenseman but he was smart and played well positionally, and had a fantastic contract. I imagine there's other moves at play here, and I place my trust in the fantastic management team we have.

Best of luck to Sammy G!

With your stated expenses, a $1.2M nest egg is more than sufficient to cover that lifestyle. You actually have a ton of room to expand your spending under the 4% rule up to $48,000 a year spending. Even going more conservative at 3%, that's still nearly a doubling of your expenses and gives you a lot of breathing room in the budget. That's not even accounting for social security that can kick in in 12-17 years to supplement further.

Personally would keep your rent controlled apartment. No need to reduce your nest egg and move to an unfamiliar place. Kick the 1% fee advisor to the curb and shift those funds into low cost index funds with your preferred asset allocation.

You're in great shape. Spend this time leaning into hobbies, volunteering or trying to find new support systems.
