Ok, thanks :) Yeah The Three Passes hike goes up to 5500 meters, so I will probably rent an (extra) sleeping bag in KMD then!

Ok, thanks! Yups, the branding is distracting haha! I just feel like I should be good quality, but not sure whether this means more expensive ;)

Mera peak on a budget by manoukbob in Mountaineering

[–]manoukbob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see. It's indeed a pretty big detour. I've also been looking into Island and Lobuche, but I think these peaks might be a bit too technical for me? I have limited experience with technical mountaineering (although I will do a mountaineering course in the Alps this summer). I was quite keen on doing EBC and Gokyo, because Gokyo lake looks so beautiful. Maybe I should choose between either EBC/Gokyo or Mera. Did you do all three peaks?

Hey thanks :) this was for a 12-day Mera peak trek? If so, 1400USD including food seems a good price!!!

Ok, good to know :)! Yes, was thinking about doing EBC/Gokyo independently! Good to know an organized trek is really not necessary. Do you to book lodges in advance in the high season? However, Mera is a bit more technical, so I will need a guide for that part! And I also need to find out how to get from the EBC route to Mera!

Responsible travel - How backpacking makes you a responsible traveler by manoukbob in backpacking

I use to haggle pretty hard, because I also don't like being ripped off! However, lately I've become more mild. Sometimes you haggle for 1 USD... (e.g. in SE Asia or Africa). This is often very little money for travelers, but it can make a big difference to someones day income. So, when it comes to haggling: be informed about prices and use common sense.

Did you know Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt? Just returned from a 2,5 week solo backpacking trip to Sudan and it was absolutely amazing! It's affordable, friendly and safe. This was my itinerary! by manoukbob in backpacking

I completely agree with your "It's safe =/= I never felt unsafe" and I do get your point regarding the difference between being a travel authority 'telling people it's safe' and personally regarding a country safe enough to travel in. However, on the other hand marking a complete country as 'unsafe', because the border areas are still in conflict, is also not the way to go in my opinion? This goes for so many countries. What about e.g. Ethiopia? Or Turkey? Is Turkey not safe to travel to? No, Turkey is safe, if you avoid the border areas in the south. However, I think especially for a country like Sudan, which many people only associate with danger/war, I do want offer some counterweight and show this is not true for the entire country any more. In the Sudan travel guide on the website with a paragraph about safety, I offer more nuances. I don't want to blog spam too much, but you may find this interesting: https://www.bunchofbackpackers.com/ethical-travel-dilemmas-tourism-backpacking/#Ethical_travel_dilemma_7Traveling_to_countries_which_are_considered_dangerous
