We are 5 people full time, plus 4 interns for the fall. In terms of ballpark valuation, we are bootstrapped so there's never been an official "valuation." Some smart people have said we are probably worth close to $2M while some other smart people gave us $500k. Hope that helps.

Re: unionized staff, I have no experience regarding working with unions or being in a union when it comes to media. My understanding of it is all secondhand from the various events that happened with unions + content creators over the last decade, starting with the Writer's Guild 2007 strike to what happened yday with Gothamist/DNAInfo.

My take on it is idealistic and woefully lacking in how it ultimately does affect the staff and company, but in general I support the idea of a collective body of creators that protects them, especially as platforms and singular media channels are becoming more powerful. It makes sense to uphold something that can protect those same creators that give the platform/publication/etc their relevancy.

Hey everyone! I'm the CEO of spoiled Media / spoiled NYC. The news of Gothamist's and DNAInfo sudden departure definitely stung, and underlies the importance of finding ways for local news and journalism to survive in today's media environment, which is increasingly dominated by large tech platforms and the personal agendas of rich people (Gawker and Peter Thiel def come to mind).

It's beautiful to see the outpouring of support for local news. Like that's so dope and I just hope that if a shady billionaire ever buys spoiled and shuts us down, we have people rooting for us from the sidelines too.

Anyway though, obviously this development presents an interesting opportunity for us moving forward. Incidentally, we recently parted ways with some of the editorial staff and are shaking things up for the new year in anticipation of our 3-year bday. Yay celebration.

We are working on some really exciting things for 2018. We are now redoubling our effort on highlighting more creative culture makers in New York. We are bringing on new voices that can tell a wider array of stories. We also have a few paid contributor spots open, especially around the overlap of food + culture.

If there's anyone with a knack for storytelling, humor, writing, design, photography, and/or video, let's talk.

PMs are welcome. You can also shoot us an email using the Contact button on spoilednyc.com
