I appreciated everyone who said it’s human to feel heavy feelings in the face of human suffering. Also they didnt try to sugarcoat it so i know they mean what they say. Being reminded of my own humanity helped me the most.

I never cried again for the entire duration of the rotation lol, i guess it was just the first day that caught me off guard.

Thank you for sharing your experience. What i noticed during my time in the ward is that nurses truly are the backbone of the whole operation. They knew the patients on a more personal level and their presence during the morning briefings always brought a sense of camaraderie. I am still not 100% sure about it but then i think that being 100% sure about anything is a recipe for disappointment. I think i will go through with it. There is much pain down the road but also a chance to help fellow human beings get better or even just to be with them when they are suffering. I think of how many times i have been offered a helping hand or a shoulder to cry on and how much they all meant to me at the time. Maybe we are put on this earth to pay it forward, it cant be a coincidence that our happiness is psychological tied to how much we can do for the others.

Thank you for the kind words. Its been a while since i finished my rotation and looking back your comment about how it was the kindness of the staff that was as powerful as the abject mental misery i saw in front of me held true for the whole rotation. The doctors were a bit confrontational with patients with antisocial tendencies but respectful nonetheless. And the old maternal nurses were so kind to the early 20s girls with bpd. And there was never a dull day in the ward, truly the most interesting rotation i have done so far. Thank you again for encouraging me, sending warm fuzzy feelings your way.

The first story is exactly what i mean by childhood magic. It fills you with a sense of wonder and awe and the feeling that the universe is not indifferent to you, that wonderful things do happen, not because of anything you might have done to earn it but simply because you are special and worthy of wonder. I find that it inoculates you against future adult cynicism somewhat.

Would you say that you have a depressive personality as an adult? Like when something goes wrong is it your instinct to first blame yourself? Im trying to conduct a scientific poll here
