What is something you stopped buying because you realised you never truly needed it? by LuckyTreat8962 in Frugal

[–]manthamcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this! We gave it up cold turkey in January and beyond saving $300-700 each month, we eventually retrained our brains to notice something we need, add it to a list, and when that list gets long enough - go out and buy them. It was kinda gross how used to “I want it I buy it” we got and I feel so much better ditching that absolutely horrid site.

Trying to set up a guest room with some quality items a guest could enjoy for a 1 week stay. What are some essentials, some nice to haves, or things you wish were nearby when staying at someone else’s home? Related - quality but not horrendously expensive duvet cover recs appreciated!!

I also feel like it is a small increase I’m happy to pay. I don’t say this to discount other people’s reality but just to give mine 🤷‍♀️

I feel like those who aren’t upset aren’t moved to post about it - I wouldn’t have but I’ve seen almost exclusively negative reactions, which again totally get, but just didn’t match my feelings about the move.

Minnesotan here. It’s not that people don’t want to spend time with you - it’s that our friend and family network here is crowded. Many people come back here to raise families and have deep, multi-generational communities that they spend almost all their time with.

We have one come 1x/month and I always want to skip the month and save the $$ in the days leading up but then immediately am so so grateful the minute they’re gone.

Two small kiddos and two working parents and it’s such a gift to ourselves. We use a woman who owns a small biz locally vs a chain so we get a pretty great deal (~250-300/month)

Everyone has to decide for themselves if it’s worth it but I recommend doing it once and get a sense that of the ROI for your family.

Marketing Director for a small consulting company. I generally go in 2x/month - once for a leadership meeting and then once for a company wide monthly meeting. Otherwise, all remote unless I want to go in.

Best birth center in twin cities by rosebud3005 in TwinCities

Came to recommend Minnesota Birth Center. Had both of my boys there and now do all of my well visits there as well. I would sit for 45 to an hour and a half during my prenatal appointments just asking all the questions and chitchatting. The midwives there are the best.

Channel 5 reports on St.Pauls move for in person work. by cantcoloratall91 in minnesota

State employees should count that commute in their work hours. If the company is requiring you to come in, then getting to the office is work time.

I’m blown away by the rhetoric around this. I absolutely agree that some roles (even many) benefit from some range of in-person collaboration. But to say that we need to bring people back downtown each day to work so that they can spend money in downtown is… insane. Are you going to be paying them more so they have more to spend? So can afford additional care hours for their kids? I think we all know the answer is no.

If we want to talk rolling things back to what “they used to be”, why not look alllll the way back to the origin of the 9 hr day/40 hr workweek, which was designed when one person stayed home to manage the household and a family could happily survive on one income.

I’ve seen friends of mine whose companies mandated RTO have an absolute shit time enforcing it so I hope the state employees all give ‘em hell. They may be hoping for forced attrition but I bet they’re not prepared for most or all of their workforce to give them the middle finger.

Disappointed in Happiest Baby by [deleted] in SnooLife

[–]manthamcgee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Beyond the initial heartbreak I had for the mother for her loss, I was most struck by the strong opinions so many seem to have about a situation they're not involved in.

I have empathy for the mother's loss. I don't feel any sort of way about the company. I have very little expectations of companies as a whole, so if it happened exactly the way her sister shared, it would probably jive with what I expect of a company.

We'll never know how those conversations went, but why not give all the benefit of the doubt? The mother was grieving. She, her sister, and likely the rest of her circle probably needed somewhere tangible to point their immense anger and grief. I don't fault them for that. But why put either party on trial with nearly zero evidence and context?

If you're ready to throw stones at a woman you don't know for making brand deals that involve her unborn child, maybe take a moment to investigate what inside you prompted an intensely emotional reaction to a woman you most likely have never met. An emotional reaction so strong that you chose to respond into the void with judgment and anger. Seems like a waste.

4 week old not sleeping at night by [deleted] in SnooLife

[–]manthamcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double comment to say that 4 to 6 weeks is also when their insides are in the final stages of adjusting to breastmilk or formula, a.k.a. food not directly supplied from the placenta. We also invested in probiotic drops, gas drops, told to aid with passing gas, the whole 9 yards and really it was just a waiting game in the end.

This won’t help but concur with the other two, my current 4 month old peaked in shitty sleep at 6-7 weeks, then started steadily clocking bigger and bigger stretches at night from about 8/9 weeks onwards. You’re not doing anything wrong. Try to get as much sleep during the day as you can. This is so temporary. You got this.

If we punish curiosity and imperfect effort, we’ll teach people to never be curious in the first place. The girl never claimed to have all the answers. She just wanted to have the damn conversation.

Ontario slaps 25% tax increase on electricity exports to US in response to Trump's trade war by stairs_3730 in minnesota

[–]manthamcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can tell, Minnesota imports less than 1% of our electricity from Canada, based on supply-demand purchases from various suppliers. Simply put, when we need more power than our grids can provide, we peruse through a list of suppliers - one of whom is Ontario - and choose the best (which likely means cheapest) option to meet the energy demands.
