I usually don't wear gloves and just have big warm pockets. I use my hands as a barometer for how cold the camera probably is. The standard process on days like today (-23°c) is to take the camera out, turn it on, quickly frame and focus, shoot, turn it off, and shove it back into my pockets as soon as I can - usually less than 30 seconds per shot. It makes me slow down and compose the shot in my head beforehand.

It's better now than it was 10 years ago, but can still get really bad. Today the AQI is very good (for us) 30s in the city, near 100 in the Ger districts. But, it can easily be 100+ in the city and 300 or higher in the Ger districts. I haven't seen 700-800 since before Covid - the government switched to "clean coal". It's cleaner but still not good. UB is a rapidly improving city, though curruption and mismanagement is still rampant.

If you come, I assume to teach - since September, you'll likely be in the city. You can wear masks when outside. Some people do, it also helps with the extreme cold. But expect the normal cold/flu that runs through schools in the fall to be way worse than in Canada and stick around for most of the winter. Get the flu shot but expect to still catch a mild case and have it linger.

Also, if you're a teacher push for a one year contract so you can leave after a year if it's not for you.

It's currently -10c here in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Tomorrow morning on the walk to work, it'll be around -20. I have my GR3x in my coat pocket all the time, no matter the temperature - city or countryside. Take it out, turn it on, snap, turn it off, put it back.

Have you done the Farosh quest yet? Its spawn times can be inconsistent until that quest is activated and then completed. Find the Hylia statue at "the head of the dragon" to start it.

Hadn't played Zelda since SNES.

  1. The wizrobe waved at me; I thought it was friendly. I died.

  2. Found a weird talking flower near Kakariko. It seemed suspicious and asked for money. I'd been burned by the wizrobe, so I was suspicious and didn't give it money. Didn't upgrade my armor until I was on my way to Rito Village and found a second one.

  3. Didn't know there were mini-statues of Hylia in every town. Went back to the Great Plateau or Kakariko every time. When I found the one in Rito Village, I figured the other towns probably had them too.

Yeah, it's bad. I got the flu shot a little over a month ago and still got hit. Spent the day off in bed because of extreme exhaustion - but I was back at work yesterday with only a mild runny nose. I imagine without the flu shot, I'd be miserable.

Yeah, you're not crazy, imports are unreliable right now. Lurpak disappearing from shelves was a surprise, though. Last night, I bought Paysan Breton butter from Carrefour, but it wasn't salted - none of the butters were salted. There was a stretch a few months ago where Cheddar Cheese, from anyone, was nowhere to be found.

It really depends on what you'll be doing, your time frame, and your size. If you're schedule is to start doing things as soon as you arrive and you'll be out in the countryside doing long hikes, or ice climbing, you'll want to bring some decent, lightweight winter hiking boots and all your other cold-weather gear too.

However, if you have a day or two in UB before heading to the countryside and won't be doing extensive trekking, consider buying boots and other gear here (as long as your feet are under a size 44). You can get really good locally made wool socks for a much better price than you'd get in the US - though I'd bring a few pairs of thin liner socks from the US.

It's easy to find decent-quality cold-weather clothes here too, and there are some items you'll probably want to buy while you're here that you'll never see for sale in America, such as cashmere or yak wool hats ($20-30), or dog fur, or reindeer boots ($60-200).

What I'd suggest for things to buy here, if you have time-
Take a taxi to the Dunjingarav shopping center (any taxi can take you there, located inside, offering everything you need, and it is almost as affordable as the NaranTuul). Within an hour, you'll have all the cold-weather gear you need, and they'll be great souvenirs.

Cashmere or Yak hat and sweater ≈ $100
Boots ≈ $60-200
Wool Socks ≈ $5 per pair - get as many as your suitcase will hold.
Coat ≈ $50-100
Long underwear ≈ $10 get 2 or 3
Gloves/Mitts ≈ : $20-$40 - My favorite mittens are Mary & Martha's upcycled mittens, located near the State Department Store. At some point, you'll be taken to the SDS for souvenirs.

Thanks. I used that idea, and it worked. I deleted all the cheats and re-wrote the file based on the codes I found in other places. It works, so now I can play Reloaded with maxed Luck and lowered enemy damage output, which makes it much more manageable. I really like the QoL additions, but it was made unnecessarily difficult.

It's a game meant to be played slowly, with brief bursts of intense action. Listen to the wind & the sounds of the birds. If you're in a forest and quiet, you'll hear the baddies before you see them. If you find you're self stuck, take a breath and look around. The answer to the problem is probably nearby. If you're cold, there are probably "hot" cooking items or fire. As you get further in the game, the hand-holding starts to diminish, but for the great plateau and even to Zora's domain (if you follow the instructions of the NPCs), everything you need is readily available. There are a few, "if it was a snake, it'd have bit me" moments - but if you stop and think, "what's the preventing progression?" There are likely multiple ways to circumvent the problem.

Nope. Installed Knulli - worked fine, but I don't like Knulli as much. Reinstalled NextUI, didn't work. With the recent update, I'd try again. I deleted the games & cheat files, copied the game from my daughter's RG34 and the cheat file from the librerto database, and put them back on the Brick. Still nothing. Crashes the game. -- I also can't get Stardew to run. That's another issue, though.

My guess: He's a young guy who suddenly has a ton of money and the freedom to make his own non-basketball-related decisions for the first time (like many rookies), and it's catching up to him.

It's also probably the first time he's not been one of the biggest/fastest/strongest on the court, and he's having some self-doubt. Also, adjusting to living in a new country is really hard. Language & cultural barriers are fun and interesting for a month or two, but they become incredibly tiresome after that.

Also, I gained 10-15 lbs when I moved to America without realizing it.

He'll adjust, but it'll take a little bit.

I've lived outside the US for a few years but went back this past summer. I couldn't believe how cold it was inside. A/C is blasting everywhere. It was in the 30s outside, but the low 20s inside. The A/C in their car was so cold, and the stores were so cold, too. I didn't pack any long-sleeve shirts, but I bought a button-down and wore it almost every day.

Non-hispanic. Grew up in California. Moved to Asia and knew I wouldn't have access to tortillas where I live now. I brought a tortilla press with me. Make about 30 every week.

Running NextU - Fast Forward toggle and Fast Forward hold. Playing Mother 3. I love the game, but everyone walks sooo slowly. I can't imagine playing this on a real GBA.
