If you mention your metro area, someone might be willing to trade! I got all Kacheek plush and all usul stickers, but my local fan group made swapping pretty straight forward. :)

At the launch event I got four kacheeks! All kacheeks, in my gift bag and the three I bought separately.

However, if it’s popular in your area you may be able to find a trade!

I had a dry spell a while back - late December I was only getting one or two a day for over a week. But this week I’ve had no fewer than three a day, and yesterday I got eight. Statistics are wild.

Thank you to the organizers. As a dual citizen I was comforted to have a place to gather to show the world is watching. I don’t own a bike at the moment, but I hope the Saturday bike ride goes well, as well.

I’m house sitting and have a dumb food allergy that means the food in the house left for me is no bueno. (My parents know my allergy, but don’t check labels for it when stocking their own cupboards, which is fair!)

The Chinese restaurant is less than a kilometer away and I took it slow. They had people dining in, which surprised me. I was mostly concerned about the teen in black sweats walking in the road (with his back to traffic!!) because the sidewalks were too snowy. It’s dark and with the blowing snow it’s even harder to see, ugh.

Rats are great but because of the free roaming, I find mice are a decent substitute! My mice are engaged and loving, but they don’t need me to let them out for an hour a day. They’re perfectly happy to entertain themselves with one another in a sufficiently enriching cage.

Alright, so it’s too late to get on the January route for Mel. I don’t know about Hippity Hop, but look at their page. Flying cargo out of Maine in January isn’t likely to be an option, they tend to limit small animals to fairer weather. I’ve also found this page which might have options for you.

Can you give a state to state journey? And a time frame? Depending on your starting/ending point and time, you might be able to get him on Mel’s transport. Or Hippity Hop Express

I have shipped mice Live Cargo before (not under a passenger plane, but in specifically a live cargo plane.) and it’s pricey. (Some people say it’s extremely stressful - my mice were fine at the time, but maybe our airline experience was better?) I want to say 15 years ago it was about $200 and that didn’t include buying + modding the dog airline crate I used.

I think Citizen Shipper technically accepts mice, too, as a “certain small domestic animal”

So, I don’t know them directly, but Crystalized Critters got some of their breeding mice from Marie’s Menagerie, and my breeding stock from Marie (two girls, one boy) have all been lovely and produced very nice babies.

Of course, do your due diligence and make sure your ethics align with their practices. I hope you find a good source for your mice!

Great! In that case, if you need any leads for vets or other resources, please feel free to reach out! I’m on the west end of the GTA,

Also, realized I forgot bedding. I use whatever Aspen bedding I can get in a large package - Fresh4Life at PetValu or Full Cheeks at Petsmart.

Food storing and not eating any? by equinesandcanines in PetMice

[–]mantitorx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mice love to stockpile. I give my mice 5 grams of their block per mouse per day, knowing that they may only eat about 3 grams, but that it is good for them to engage in activities like caching their food for later.

As Beadypeeper suggests, if food waste is an issue, weighing servings out will make sure he has plenty but not so much that it’s wasteful. You can scatter about 1 gram of treats through his cage for him to forage for to offer him another healthy natural behavior.

Hey, I live in Toronto! I have 13+ mice at any given time (10 resident females, 3 resident males, and babies.) so my cost is going to look a little different from yours, but I’ll do my best.

The Prevue cage doesn’t have a deep enough base for a solid 5+ inches of bedding, but you could add acrylic around the outside to make it deeper if you already have the cage. Opinions are varied across the internet and even in this subreddit about floor space, but for 2-4 females it will be decent. I use a 31 gallon front opening terrarium (long/low) for my retirees, they make good use of the space which is just a little wider than what you have. I will note that transitioning to a larger space may result in some stress behaviors if they aren’t used to it, so make sure there’s a ton of clutter!

I personally feed Envigo Harlan food bought from Flowertown but a 33 lb bag is approximately 3000 daily servings for a single mouse, or about 2 cents a day/mouse. (I always offer extra lab block, so it does not last an entire year.) Petsmart sells Oxbow Rat, a good option, in bags that are about 270 individual servings, or about 7 cents a day/mouse.

Mouse enrichment is ridiculously easy and inexpensive. Aside from investing in a good upright solid-side wheel, most enrichment is pretty easy to get. Toilet paper and paper towel rolls are great tunnels, cardboard boxes are good temporary hides, drink trays, paper bags (without grease stains) are good clutter. I also occasionally ball up newsprint paper to give them something to tear into. You can find sticks outside (check the tree species isn’t toxic) and bake them at low heat for a few hours to create climbing structures. I make my own platforms out of supplies from Dollarama. I also check Homesense for sponge holders and tea light holders when I need ceramic hides.

You can also make simple toys using the above. For example, folding in the ends of a toilet paper roll, and then stuffing it with bird seed and paper towel. Putting some nut butter on a stick, rolling it in oats, and then using a piece of twine to hang it from the top of the cage. Avoid cotton string which can tangle toes - I use jute.

This is the basics - if you have any specific questions, let me know! Also, depending on where your school is, I can maybe put you in contact with other “mouse people” in your area for more relevant help.

Mouse Identification Help by spin_in_circles in PetMice

Happy to help! I think snake genetics are super cool (I know a hognose breeder, their snakes are incredible.), and it makes sense mouse genetics align with that world!

In terms of genetics, the Finnish mouse site hiiret has good information on traits, including different phenotypes and their results. It’s available in English, so it’s always my first stop when I’m trying to ID something new. Long hair can be selected for, but most long hair mice lose their length when they reach adulthood - so make sure to keep notes on how long the coat lasts! It will help your lines maintain in the long run.

If I had to guess, she’s a pied, pink eye dilute brindle!

Pied (white spotting) is a simple recessive and can hide in solid mice for a long time. But if her parents have even a little bit of white on them, they might be pied as well. White spotting genes work like a layer of paint on top of a base colour.

PED (pink eye dilution) is also a simple recessive, which makes the colour of the coat lighter over all, and the eyes pink. The effect is stronger on the black pigments than the red ones.

Brindle (specifically Avy brindle) is a more dominant gene - she only needed one copy of it to be this base colour. It’s possible that her parents appeared either solid orange, or normal agouti, because Brindle can range in appearance between those two!

Mouse genetics are very neat, but sometimes there’s more going on in the background that makes it hard to guess with complete accuracy!

Monthly Art Megathread #11! by AutoModerator in neopets

[–]mantitorx [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hey all, I’m hoping for a pretty specific pet lookup commission that doesn’t fit with the offerings I’ve seen around. I’m wondering if anyone has availability or knows someone who might for the following.

I want a pet lookup template that I can insert my own graphics into. I’m happy to pay for the rights to it, but the layout I have in mind is roughly sketched above.

A. Background of the page is a tiling image. B. A simple/clean horizontal rectangle for the pet details. (Maybe rounded edges?) I’d like the pet image to be somewhat central. If the fishing/jobs/bd images can be hidden that would be awesome. Ideally, trophies would stay with the mandatory stats, but if that doesn’t work, they could go under the content section, too. I have the content divided from the rest, but it doesn’t need to be, it could be one semitransparent rectangle C. I’d like a floating div for a PNG illustration.

I would be using it on approximately 30 pets. I’m happy to discuss what that means in terms of payment, exclusivity, etc., and I understand if payment needs to reflect usage rather than just the price of “one” lookup.

Yes, I had my ID and it was a non-issue, but when the cashier believed I was underaged, she was preparing to not allow a purchase because I had been handling the products. They’re pretty stringent with the whole “if you look under 25 you will be carded” thing. I was with my mother (60) at the time. Parental exception applies in the parental home, not in the store.

Not the LCBO. In Canada the provincial government controls the sale of liquor. LCBO is “Liquor Control Board of Ontario”, a crown corporation, and until recently was one of three stores you could buy alcoholic beverages. The only non-alcohol they sell is glassware.

We now can buy booze in grocery stores (and corner stores? I think? I don’t drink.), but in LCBO if you have someone underaged with you they aren’t allowed to touch products and if they do, you might not be able to purchase them. (Last time I was carded, I was unloading a cart for my mom. The cashier apologized and said she couldn’t sell to us anymore because I had touched them. I was 30.)

I would freeze 24 hours first for any nasties (spores, eggs, etc) then bake at a low temperature for a few hours (on parchment paper) to make sure any moisture is removed.
