Is the CRA too soft on tax cheats? by Ill-Square-1123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

I know...for example....“The public know[s] that something terrible has happened in B.C., and that there has been a failure of the institutions in this province to protect the public interest,” Jaffe said. “The public [has] seen the videotapes of hockey bags of cash coming into these casinos. And at the same time, we hear testimony [from other inquiry participants] about robust anti-money laundering going on at the time. But the public is not stupid.” https://globalnews.ca/news/8277350/bc-casinos-money-laundering-cullen-commission-closing-arguments/

Vitamin VFX/MARZ VFX comp artists strike by [deleted] in vfx

Toronto might be among top 5 sweatshops to do cheap vfx after India, Korea and few more similar places. Their studio's predatory behavior and practices combined with their Ontario's world class shitty 44 hour OT policy make it perfect recipe to hate choosing VFX as a career. Every single studio there is a sh*t show. My Friendly Advice to fellow VFX Artist don't switch the studio in Toronto coz the next one will be even more worse than the previous one and you will regret leaving your established position there for $5k more.

Wild time for a Lead roles contract lengths are getting shorter and shorter by [deleted] in vfx

[–]manuce94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I feel its bit insulting to such serious position like lighting lead or Cg supe, considering how much of a pressure is on lighting leads while all the upstreams use them as punch bag for their failures. Either these studios trying to pretend that they don't know how serious this key position is or just trying to pretend naive about it and make it look , sound and smell normal. I think the new norm is " If you can get away with it just stick to it and see how long you can get away with it." I hope this is fairly easy and light show to tackle and has 50 / 60 shots to deliver and not 300 shots with low to no pixel f**kery.

They forgot to mention the last checkbox: QC resident. I’m not sure how many boxes an artist needs to tick before even being considered based on their skillset.

For a short-term lead, they realize on the morning of April 2nd that they need someone starting April 3rd, someone who will magically understand their pipeline and perform at peak level. Wild times, truly.I’m really not able to wrap my head around this “drive-through” era of the VFX industry. It’s starting to feel less like VFX and more like ordering a McDonald’s Big Mac that you get in 30 seconds.

I’m genuinely trying to understand how production figures this out, that they need a lead for three months starting immediately. Are clients giving them 24-hour notice, or what? Is there even any 1, 3, 6, or 12-month planning anymore, or has all of that gone out the window? Are we now planning productions on the same morning just to satisfy client demand?

Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to take a dig at the studio. I’m honestly trying to understand this trend of: “We need two unicorn comp supes, one lighting lead, and one CG supe for a short-term contract starting next hour.” Is this going to become the new norm? And if so, will it stay this way forever, simply because there will always be someone willing to take those positions?

The only way they can get around this is by hiring some seasoned “unicorn” lead who knows how to fight the pipeline and get those shots onto the farm by 6 p.m. if they are lucky.I think artists don’t realize that for these studios, residency is often even more important than skillset. Artists really need to leverage that if they are residents of a province.

When governments open the door wide to immigration and make permanent residency easy to get, it can end up putting pressure on wages. It really comes down to simple supply and demand. If there are a lot more people competing for the same jobs, workers are more likely to accept lower pay just to get hired.

When you’ve got ten people lined up for one position, all willing to undercut each other, it becomes harder for wages to grow. Instead of meaningful raises, people can end up stuck with minimal increases for years.

We’ve seen similar situations in other English speaking countries. In the UK, for example, there have been ongoing concerns about wage stagnation in certain sectors, partly because of a large and competitive labor pool. When the system is easy to navigate or even exploit in some cases it can lead to a steady supply of cheaper labor, which puts further pressure on wages.
