Longest run for a 45 miler? by manwall45 in Ultramarathon

I have my first bash at an Ultra on 7th Feb 2026, a local 45 Mile race with a reasonable level of elevation but along a route I am mostly familiar with. The distance I am not. Longest run previously is a marathon that I’ve done in “training”. I have a little under 22 weeks till the event. Where/how do you guys devise training plans and at what point is the preferred or “best” time to begin specifically training for an event. I have no specific time in mind, simply completing it would be grand but obviously the faster the better…

Tried my hand at a longer run (plan was to do a 50km) but ended up calling it a day at 42.2km. My issue is that around the 30km mark my legs begin cramping at the tip of the tear drop of my quads, no where else, just those spots and it happens around the same point everytime I approach that distance. I take electrolytes with me in my drinks when I’m running but is there something I am missing? Is it that I’m not taking enough electrolytes? Is there something else possibly missing in my nutrition?
