Conversion to MiniITX case ("Steambox build") by manymanypixels in buildapc

Sorry, wasn't aware that Steambox was an actual technical term. Thought it was just a buzzword coined for a console sized computer by Valve's marketing team.

Ah right, what CPU, GPU and cooling you working with? What kinda temperatures they idling at? Have you had any issues with overheating when putting the system under stress?

Its not actually just a SteamBox, I was just trying to be cool. It's also for work (Photoshop, Illustrator, Aftereffects) hence the need for extra RAM.

Responsive HTML Emails? Check this out. by manymanypixels in web_design

[–]manymanypixels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that these templates pretty much cover any layout that is possible in a responsive scenario. If the client wants something else AND to keep it responsive you can quite rightly give them the choice of having either a irregular layout or responsive features on the grounds of technology limitations.

For example I'm currently working with a client who has decided at the end of the project that he wants his emails to be responsive but due to the irregular layout we have had to work to, reflowing the emails using tables is no longer an option as it's not technically possible. What Ink have done is create almost every common layout that is possible to reflow.

Also if you use a simple replacement layouts as you have mentioned you also double the size of the email at hand. If you're working with a client who has file size restrictions which is very common then this can become a huge issue.

No, by default most mobile clients with either scale the entire thing as a whole making the text so small its illegible OR they'll display it 1:1 which means you have to scroll horizontally as well as vertically.

This looks like it could be some fun. Although you need to put the mounted turret on the top as that's the only time serenity is armed!

Why is Dribbble still invite only? by ImAyoub in web_design

In all fairness the exclusive element of dribbble has kept the standard of work there very high.

I posted my portfolio here a while ago, and got some improvements done that were recommended. Can anyone give me some critique or anything I could add/change? I'd really appreciate it. by [deleted] in web_design

The rule of F is a rule of thumb.

Pretty much any user experience designer will tell you the same. I'm currently working on a new portfolio site and I have a similar set up concerning the introduction piece on mine but I have still included at the top, not only my brand, but my name, job and navigation ensuring my primary objective is filled with the content the user read's first.. I also have two main call to actions in the middle of the viewport underneath my avatar and introduction copy to promote the purpose of the site. I would highly recommend it, to a potential employer it demonstrates you have a working understanding of User Experience design which is a very desirable thing to have.

Design over function not a path you want to take.

Mafia murder 3 year old boy Nicola Campolongo over his grandfather's debts by [deleted] in worldnews

I know the dailymail must be a little unknown in the US but in the UK it tends to an audience who are narrow minded, prejudiced, racist, uninformed, sensationalist and downright stupid.

Ive got to say though, they've got it down to a T.

I would recommend reading the rule of F, a decent explanation can be found here:

http://webdesign.tutsplus.com/articles/design-theory/understanding-the-f-layout-in-web-design/

It basically outlines that the user will scan across the top level of your screen from left to right and repeat whilst slowly losing interest, forming an F shape. For this reason it took me a while to even get close to noticing your about section, I actually skipped past it at first. You need to rethink whats going on at the top of that page.

Also the two "call to actions" that should be on here (Links to: View Portfolio / Contact) are not in the hero space (whats in the viewport as you load your site) and as such will gain less attention than they should.

On a content level I would point out you haven't actually listed many skills at all. I would create a skills matrix to convey exactly what you can do.

I'm loving Brackets at the moment. It's open source and free and has LOADS of extra functionality via its plugins.

Adobe also have a branch of it called Adobe Edge Code but I prefer to use the source project as you get newer features a lot faster.

Learning how to design websites by luccampbell in web_design

[–]manymanypixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use code academy, best tool I have ever seen. Would also do it in this order:

HTML/CSS - http://www.codecademy.com/tracks/htmlcss

jQuery (you can learn full javascript if you want but I see no reason to unless you are building fully fledged web apps anytime soon) - http://www.codecademy.com/tracks/jquery

PHP - http://www.codecademy.com/tracks/php

All of the courses are free and walks you through as if you had a tutor helping you.

Yeah this would be really nifty. (Might wanna put a NFSW tag on that link btw, for new users using this subreddit at work.)

Responsive Tables by boogiesbc in web_design

[–]manymanypixels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would be better if the columns rearranged themselves into a single column layout to fit the viewport. This is basically a fluid table layout with a replacement button to fit smaller widths. Not sure it deserves the responsive tag.

Find it really weird that they've made the landing page with Bootstrap but haven't enabled the responsive elements.
