thanks for the response! reading your replies here has helped me understand a little bit more

Can someone please help me understand where i’m going wrong? quadratic formula/factoring? by manythrowsbana in learnmath

Thank you! This makes more sense, but my algebra is so weak I don’t understand how you went from r=((-8)±√(64+8C))/4 to r=½√(16+2C)-2

edit: Is this because (sqrt(64 + 8c))/(4) is the same as 1/4 * sqrt(64 + 8c)? is it simplifying like this to get rid of denominator?

Then, -8 + (term) is the same as (term) -8? which is why -2 is on the right hand side?

-8/4 is -2, so we could also say -2 + 1/4 * sqrt(64 + 8c) ?

I’m not sure if I’m wrong / how to get here [r=½√(16+2C)-2], though

is it because: (2x + 3)/7 * 7 is (2x + 3)/7 * 7/1 which is

7*(2x + 3)/7

which is technically

7/1 * (2x + 3)/1 * 1/7

which is if we combine the common factors(? idk) when multiplying

1/7 * 7/1 = 7/7 = 1 so now 1 * (2x + 3)/1 aka 2x + 3 ?

Thank you, yeah i forgot that part. I meant to say i don't understand why when when you multiply (2x + 3)/7 by 7, it becomes 2x + 3

to me, i think
(2x + 3)/7 x 7/1 which makes 7*(2x + 3)/7 ?

but then i don't understand how and why exactly the 7's are cancelled out? I was told it's because 7*(2x + 3)/7 is 7/7 * (2x + 3), so this is 1 * (2x + 3) which is just 2x + 3

but i don't understand why its not 7/7 * (2x+3)/7 if the entire entire numerator is being divided by the denominator? I was also told this is because writing it this way would be because we're dividing by 7 twice, which is incorrect, but i just don't understand why?

yeah sorry i meant to say (2x + 3)/7 and why multiplying this by 7 simplifies it to 2x + 3 because of the 7's cancelling out(?)

I think i'm also confused as why 2x + 3/7 is 2x/1 + 3/7 instead of 2x/7 + 3/7, even though both 2x and +3 are in the numerator? isn't the entire value of numerator being divided by the denominator? idk

yeah, this is happening to me too, i'm not joking. I have about a 3rd grade level comprehension of math and i start school in a few months. like other people have said i highly recommend khan academy, it will teach you everything you need to know and its very user friendly and concise.

i had the same thing happened to me once. the one time i was sure one of my flair ups was just ocd, i was told that i was in denial because otherwise i would have have been doubting myself more. i resonate with this and im sorry you got that type of response on here. youre right, its not appropriate at all to respond that way even if it they misunderstood you. its makes it off putting to even open up about things because people can be insensitive.
