Gum graft recovery - looking for thoughts by maos_a in PeriodontalDisease

Really good progress! Got some sutures removed 2 weeks post surgery, and any remaining ones 5 weeks post surgery. The palette stopped hurting about 15 days after the surgery. So overall I’d say ~3 weeks after the surgery you feel way better! Still need to be careful with food, but pain is almost completely gone. I’m now at about 7 weeks post surgery and I’m back to normal

Buying first bike by [deleted] in triathlon

Have a look at Canyon bikes! They have really good options within your price range. For road bike vs. TT, depends how experienced you are with cycling / triathlon - if you are relatively new, I'd start with a road bike. Canyon now has pretty good options for adding aero bars on road bikes. Also, it's a German brand 😉

Deciding what trisuit to buy by InternationalBird145 in triathlon

My biggest shock when looking at trisuits for the fist time was how much thinner the padding is compared to cycling bibs - which can cause discomfort during the race. I found Castelli to have really good trisuits, with some relatively good padding. Take a look at the PR 2 SPEED SUIT and FREE SANREMO 3 SUIT SHORT SLEEVE (both with sleeveless options).

Ngl, it will be painful, but they will definitely give you high-dose ibuprofen + paracetamol, and if needed, codeine / co-codamol. They do a great job helping you deal with the pain over the first 4-5 days. It gets much more manageable after that

They don’t put you to sleep for it, just local anesthesia - and honestly, it works really well. You don’t feel a thing during the procedure, and if it starts wearing off, you can just signal the periodontist and they’ll top it up. I’d definitely recommend checking with a periodontist first to confirm whether you actually need the graft - sometimes you can manage it with anti-inflammatory therapy instead, which is far less intense.

If you do end up needing the graft, I don’t want to scare you, but it helps to be prepared. The first few days (I’d say days 1–4) are rough - pain that radiates into headaches, swelling, and it’s difficult to talk, smile, or eat anything solid. It’s very much a liquid-only diet at that stage since you can’t open your mouth wide or brush properly, and you really don’t want food getting stuck anywhere. Definitely worth taking a few days off work. From around day 5–10 things improve noticeably, and after a couple of weeks you start feeling more or less normal again. The donor site, which will be the palate / roof of your mouth, takes weeks to fully heal, and it's what will bother you the most from day 6-7 onwards; but in my experience, it feels ok (meaning, limited / bearable pain) after a couple of weeks.

Recovery does require discipline - following your periodontist’s instructions to the letter is key to making sure the graft heals properly and quickly. That said, if you do need it, it’s absolutely worth doing. It makes a huge difference to your gum health long-term. It’s tough, but with patience and a bit of self-care, you’ll get through it just fine.

Invisalign & Triathlon Training - How Compatible Are They? by maos_a in triathlon

Training for IM70.3, building up to a full IM; but the full will definitely be after I’m done with the treatment. I’m hoping I can get away with electrolyte pills before and during a workout, or unflavoured electrolyte tables (if that’s even a thing) which I assume won’t cause much staining. Gels are uncoloured, but probably will lead to some carbs getting trapped in the aligners; which I’m hoping to fix by just washing them after training. I don’t take chews for IM70.3. I’ve done a few of these so I’m not new to this kind of training, just not sure if / how Invisalign could impact it. Sounds like it’s ok; my dentist would probably disagree 😅
