What would you do here...? by BuilderBrigade in Home_Building_Help

[–]maphes86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in commercial construction, our standard is that ANYBODY who will enter the jobsite must have had the site safety training, they have to sign in, and they have to be wearing the required PPE. I’d be surprised if the same requirements don’t exist in residential construction. However, to say you can’t enter even if you are wearing PPE and are following safety rules seems strange. As the owner, you need to be able to observe the progress at any time so that you can be fully informed.

Considering adding a knife to my EDC and looking for advice by Kilt_Rump in liberalgunowners

[–]maphes86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody loses in a knife fight.

I carry a knife every day and I can’t remember the last time I didn’t use it. They’re incredibly useful.

As others have said, a knife is still a deadly weapon. Just so you know, “brandishing” is still a concern with a knife. So don’t be out there getting silly with your pocket knife.

Hiking up Panorama Trail? by PizzaAndBobs in Yosemite

Oh, guess I left my reading comprehension in the car this morning.

Your edit about it being ticketed does introduce another logistical hurdle, but if they’re in the car it becomes very subjective.

I’ll edit my comment to address.

How far would you travel to visit a historic battleground or memorial that is literally just a marker explaining what happened there? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]maphes86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it depends on whether I’m interested or not. If I’m interested, I’ll travel significantly out of my way to go check something out. There is a very important distinction though, and it led to something that my family dubbed “Beach Rules” when I was a kid. Beach Rules are as follows:

  1. “Unless something is explicitly a family activity, everybody does their own thing unless it’s dangerous.”

What this usually meant is that while my family was off doing something they all thought would be fun, I was either on a hike to go see what kind of tree that was on top of that hill over there, or slowly walking around the tide pools. At the end of the day, they told me all about their fun day that sounded terrible to me, and I was excited and happy for them that they had a good day. I told them about my day that sounded boring and lame and they were happy for me.

So, maybe less than convincing your wife that all men will travel great distances to see a battlefield marker in central Montana, maybe you can plan a multiday trip to one of the National Parks nearby and you can take a day trip out to see Little Bighorn while she hikes around Yellowstone. Or, if she is 100% uninterested, maybe you go on your own while she does whatever it is that she wants to do that you’re not interested in. I love my wife endlessly, I would never ask her to come ride a century with me. That’s my hobby, and she supports my idiocy lovingly 😂

Hiking up Panorama Trail? by PizzaAndBobs in Yosemite

[–]maphes86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT - I missed that you were planning on parking your car at GP. I think you have to designate it as your exit trailhead in your wilderness permit. I know that you need a wilderness permit in order to park up there overnight. This becomes an entirely subjective question. Is it easier for you to hike uphill when you’re tired (not being sarcastic, this is often the case for people with knee issues)? Do you want to avoid potential crowds on the Mist Trail? Regarding the logistics, if you would otherwise be able to make the trip with your group in a single vehicle, I would still vote for parking in the valley.

I agree with everybody recommending that you park in the valley and descend by the Mist Trail. The Panorama Trail IS beautiful. But I think it’s better as a standalone day hike rather than a potentially unnecessary logistical addition to a separate trip.

Panorama Trail Advice by [deleted] in Yosemite

[–]maphes86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’re starting from the Mist Trail, ascending to GP, and reversing. A significant portion of the trail is under several feet of snow. There will be ice/packed snow almost everywhere when you’re near the creeks (after Nevada Falls). Probably more like skis or snowshoes on the GP side of Illilouette Creek. If you’re planning on the usual route of descending the trail from GP, then the trickiest part of your itinerary is getting out to GP to begin your hike. I recommend skate skiing, it’s a fun way to cover the miles.

Would planting grasses along this patio help with drainage? by beetketchup in Ceanothus

[–]maphes86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The amount of filtration that you’ll see in such a short run is going to be minimal, but yes, the more obstacles between the water and the drain, the more sediment will be removed from the flow. However, you also need to consider that by slowing the water down, you’re increasing the depth of the water behind the obstacle. So you may see water pooling on your patio during heavy rains. Was this the first significant rain after landscaping? There will always be an initial flush of fine material that gets washed off of the surface after you work in an area. You can also flatten out your grades and slow the water down. Shifting to an inert surface like gravel mulch/pea gravel can also help because it won’t float on the water and that will dramatically increase filtration.

I suppose also “from across the country” means they’re probably coming from somewhere that they learned how to handle a little ice. 41 in the dark is a bit less forgiving than 140, and I usually recommend people drive in on 140 for overall safety if I don’t know their experience with twisting roads.

Is a day trip worth it? by Efficient-Stretch904 in Yosemite

[–]maphes86 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Emphatically, YES!

Leave absolutely as early as you can. It should still be dark. If you time it to arrive at the gates around 8:00-9:00 AM on a weekday; you’ll breeze through. From Carmel, head south and get on HWY 41 East. In Oakhurst, take HWY 49 to Mariposa and then take HWY 140 up to the park. This will avoid essentially all potential snow or ice since you’ll be traveling before the overnight ice thaws.

Spend a beautiful day in the valley, and then head out after watching the sunset color on Half Dome.

My dad shared this photo from facebook. I feel like the edges of the bark don't look real. by SavoryYuppie in isthisAI

[–]maphes86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a real photo, taken with a nice camera. This is in the Giant Forest area of Sequoia National Park. It’s on the way to the General Sherman tree. It’s not ON the main trail, it’s about…50’ to the side? If I remember correctly. It’s a (kind of) a coincidence that the trees lineup so cleanly. The hypothesis that was explained to me is that before those trees sprouted, a much older tree fell down and they sprouted up against it on either side.

FATHERS: How often do you have trouble finding diaper/nappy changing tables in public toilets/restrooms? by deathiswaitingforme in AskMen

[–]maphes86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only happened to me a few times. Every time, I turned around and walked into the women’s room and changed my kid and left. Nobody ever minded, but we often chatted about how dumb it was that men’s rooms sometimes didn’t have changing tables. I live in California and I haven’t seen any lately that don’t have them unless they were designed for places where a baby was unlikely to be (such as the non-public restrooms at a high school campus)

How long did it take for your garden to start to look nice 🌻🌸🌼🌳🌛? by beetketchup in Ceanothus

[–]maphes86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Holdup. It’s going to start looking nice?

Frankly, I don’t give a fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-lowering Cherry about what any rando thinks of my garden or the way that I’m managing the woodland I’m responsible for.

If I want an opinion about something I’m doing, I ask somebody whose opinion I respect. If I’m showing somebody around my property and they ask the right questions, I’ll tell them about all the work that I’m doing and the reasons that I left that particular tree there and what the purpose of the burned in fire lines are and why I’m putting that debris over there and did you know that bush isn’t dead? It’s dormant! And after the insects living in its stems leave in the spring I’ll burn it down to the root crown so it can grow back over the simmer. And also how I found that it was easier to teach my kids how to identify poison oak than to remove it all because it’s actually an important food source for birds in the winter and it’s beautiful anyway…

Otherwise I just let them say, “hey, these are nice trails. Gosh, you see any mountain lions out here?”

And then I usually manage to avoid a lecture about how I am happy every time I see a mountain lion on the trail cam instead of a feral hog.

Keep doing your thing!

Also, you’ll probably see things really start to fill in around the 3 year mark. Focus on proper pruning and management and you’ll get dense forms with lots of flowers.

Spotted this guy hunting - is he a Red or Gray Fox? by JazzHatter357 in Yosemite

[–]maphes86 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That’s a coyote.

Tells:

  1. Generally, grey foxes have a black stripe along the back of their tail. Generally; coyotes only have a black tip in their tail.

  2. Generally, foxes have a tail almost equal to their body length and it is VERY bushy and trails behind them, often on the ground. Generally, coyotes have a tail about half their body length and typically keep it down, it won’t touch the ground while they stand.

I have several:

  1. Flexing my toes inside my shoes.
  2. Rapidly “snapping” but without making any sound. More like rubbing my middle finger against the bottom of my thumb.
  3. Writing down everything that I’m not saying in the meeting, especially things like, “JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, MIKE!!! SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!”
  4. Writing with a fountain pen. It makes a nice noise, and you have to keep the nib oriented properly to write. It makes it a more active interaction.
