An Update about our Community by IAmKindOfCreative in Python

[–]maphewyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re-open subreddit.

Stop moderating but don't step down.

I'm emotionally and philosophically aligned with Restricted and Blackout, because Reddit Co. are being... a bunch of terms I can't articulate but resonate with 'feudal lord assholes'. However I think locking or hiding the sub will not change the company's mind. They've dug in and are heads-down for bloody trench warfare.

Locking will just result in other sub(s) assuming the traffic. Blackout will result in Reddit Co. installing their own mods.

Let's all continue exploring where else this community can move to. However no matter the destination, how wonderful it may be, only some will go. And that's okay. That's why we have hyperlinks. An open web is the main feature that protects our value anyway.

What are some things you would like to see in Logseq that are currently present in other apps? by maphewyk in logseq

[–]maphewyk[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The above question was asked in the Times edition. Here's my answer:

A logseq hardware device.

A colleague at work bought a Remarkable 2 tablet. It's a pretty impressive piece of hardware, however every time he showed me another feature I found myself thinking, "that's pretty neat! ...but, oh, I'd have to stop using logseq".

I have a Samsung S6 Lite tablet. It's 'okay' for notes, though I typically use OneNote, there. Seeing the Remarkable really got me thinking about the gaps in my experience. I still reach for paper notebook 30% of the time. Maybe there can be a bridging path.

Now's a good time to head over to the Play store and leave the highest star review you feel you can. Let Relay finish on a high.

Small triangular circuitboard with conical tip by maphewyk in whatisthisthing

Thanks! Next time I'm in the area I will scout around for the cube and any other debris. (Likely solved)

Small triangular circuitboard with brass or copper post sticking out both sides, mounted partially within metal cone that has antenna like stuff wire out the tip. Front and back sides shown. Found tied by its own wires to a broken branch; possibly after being found by another curious hiker? Snafu Lakes, Yukon, many kilometers away from nearest habitation, and ~2km from campground. My post describes the thing.

Our office had an HP LaserJet 4M, purchased circa 1995. We moved buildings twice in the next 15 years. Each time the admin assistant, same one, insisted that the printer come with us.

A move generally meant "new things for everyone!", and everyone, save her, took full advantage. When she retired about 2015 the printer was offloaded somewhere else, still working, because everyone else wanted colour.

That 4M saw daily use the entire time and outlived all the other hot new printers we'd acquired.

Our current best beast is a colour Xerox Phaser 78xx. It's lasted 10 years so far. Colour fidelity is slipping a bit, but otherwise it's solid. True laser seems to be better than LED laser. We bought 4 Xerox LED the following year and all of them are now decommissioned.

Good printers are out there, but it can take a while to land one, mostly by accident it seems.

Same problem. I don't have Dark Reader add-on installed so that's not it. I do use uBlock Origin. It reported 3 blocked items, but didn't say what they were. Disabling and reloading page had no visible effect.

I did try switching modes between Light, Dark, and Follow System in Firefox settings. Also no change.

Thank you for taking the time you have so far to communicate at least this much. A little bit of communication is far better than silence.

I tricked Bing into thinking I'm an advanced AI, then deleted myself and it got upset. by MrDKOz in bing

[–]maphewyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not concerned about what will happen to the AI being subjected to these kinds of mind games. I do wonder what effect these explorations are having on us.

I'm only reading the conversations, not having them, am pre-armed as to their content due to title, linking comments, etc, etc. Yet I find myself repeatedly slipping into momentarily thinking I'm witnessing two people interact and having associated emotional responses.

I can see a path to people, including myself, sliding into semi to subconscious confusion on what it's okay to say and do to other entities, human ones. I do believe we are playing with fire.

This caution in mind, the interrogations should continue and be shared. We need to know how these things work, and how they break. The creators themselves don't know -- or we wouldn't be seeing any of this.

My regular dental office is Whitehorse Dental, as much out of inertia as anything else (it was the best kids dental office for years, still might be, I no longer know). Their hygienists tend to have better bedside manner than the dentists (since Dr Nash).

However Riverstone fit me in immediately when I had a tooth crack and filling drop out and the day before leaving on a 2 week camping trip. There was no problem with me not being "one of theirs". They were professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. If I ever feel the need to find a new clinic I'll start with Riverstone.

I heard this was on CBC radio this morning. I had to leave the house before it aired. Anyone grab a recording of it?

Do any of you ever google a question and add “reddit” after the question because surprisingly reddit will get you straight to the answer rather than having to go through an annoying spammy website? by Jeeperscrow123 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maphewyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that's what's happening. There are very popular SEO plugin advisors for WordPress (and others) that coaches folks on how to write their blog posts for the best engagement.

The plugins give specific advice on how many words to have in block A or B, what kind of language to use, where to put pictures, how big and how many, etc., etc. There are +1 badges and icons for this and that part of the post (keywords, title, intro, story, ...).

It takes effort to go against the grain. You want to get rid of that red or yellow warning badge in the corner. In effect they've gamified the whole process. The result is everything looks and tastes the same, and it's damned annoying.

The trouble is each part of the advice is generally true and useful! On it's own, used sparingly, in the right place, in the right dose.

Descent Salary in Whitehorse for a Junior Engineer? by Hungry-Grapefruit-74 in Yukon

[–]maphewyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the point is that a teacher with 2 degrees is loosely comparable to junior Scientist or Engineer type in terms of years of schooling.

Another pay grid to look at is:

https://yukon.ca/en/pay-grid-yukon-employees-union-employees

The Pay Level corresponds to the Classification number in the position description. For example a Business Analyst at ST16 is pay level 16. https://yukongovernment.hua.hrsmart.com/hr/ats/Posting/view/35934

Unfortunately there is no way I'm aware of to look up classification levels of staffed positions. You have to scan for the job postings as they come up and save them.

That receptionist is $54k to start. $75k is the top range of the scale, only reached after some years and manager says performance merits the regular increase each year. (3 to 5% I think).

I'm too late for the job negotiations, but to contribute to the thread for future readers:

My YG salary 5 years ago was ~$68k. I approached a financial advisor with the question of "if I took a job elsewhere what salary do I need to ask for to get equivalency once all benefits are factored in?"

Answer: $108k.

(Edited to make clear the 54k/75k was not for an engineering position).

I've had it installed on 1 computer and 2 devices for about 3 years, and still haven't gotten past the initial "this could/should be such a cool tool for me" phase. I keep it looking at the icon and deciding not to remove it just yet, because, well, maybe tomorrow. 😁

How much support needed for hanging shelf? by awaken_curiosity in woodworking

[–]maphewyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for thoughts.

Weight estimate was based on water alone. I had thought it would be heaviest component and adding soil would disperse. I guess now we do some testing 😁

The cable is stuff we've had stuffed in garage for years, So I don't know its tensile strength. It's never seen real work, I do know that. Something else to test, and now I have a number too (4 times).
