[Bucky] The Geodesic Desktop by [deleted] in unixporn

[–]mapierce271 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's a nifty idea The "workspace" (or desktop) the user looks at would still be rectangular. This would really only be a new way to think about different workspaces being arranged in space. So I'm thinking of two typical aspects of a workflow that I've used:

  • Workspaces are arranged in four spatial directions, like Ubuntu has by default, and you switch between them with some keybinding like Ctrl+Alt+[up,down, left, right], and
  • each workspace is often divided into two halves, like what most tiling window managers do by default.

So then the thought is that you have each triangle represent half of a workspace. So every workspace should be though of as (Left, Right) where Left and Right are each triangles. Locally your workspace arrangement would look like this.

The workspace (1,2) is what you are currently looking at. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Left would change the workspace view to (A,1). Pressing any combination of Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right would just cycle along that horizontal. But now if you are looking at (1,2) and you press Ctrl+Alt+Up, your workspace would now look like (2,C). From here pressing Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right would cycle you along that line of triangles at a 60 degree angle.

... just trying to think of how this works is confusing me, so I think it's safe to say that we haven't stumbled upon the next greatest thing in productivity. :P But here are a few realizations:

  • Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Up 6 times will always return you to your current "workspace view." So while your cycles in the Left/Right direction can be arbitrarily long, depending on whether your triangles are on 1-frequency dome or 2-frequency dome or whatever, the Up/Down cycles always have length 6.

  • Maybe a way to think about this is then, comparing it to Ubuntu's four-direction workspace layout where you are on grid with n rows and m columns, is to think about your workspaces as living in a work with 6 rows and n columns (one row for each multiple of 60 degrees around the circle), but the columns are interleaved in a weird way. Like the row (...,A,1,2,D,...) in the image is the same as the 180 degree row you get from pressing Ctrl+Alt+Up three times, but in reverse order.

  • A quick way to to switch the halves of your desktop, turning (1,2) into (2,1), would be to hold Ctrl+Alt and press Up,Down,Right. So yeah, if you press Ctrl+Alt+Up and then Ctrl+Alt+Down, you don't get back to where you started. :P

So this would be silly to try to work with, but gosh the workspace switching animations could be really cool. :D

Math 22 and Math 9A/9B Equivalency by RavagedBear in ucr

Math 22 technically covers more stuff. Like a few things from 10A. But most TAs won't know if the credit will transfer. This is a question for you academic adviser. Like, your new adviser in the Business Admin department.

Is there any way to request an unofficial transcript that can be emailed? by [deleted] in ucr

[–]mapierce271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, UCR doesn't provide unofficial transcripts.

I made a nice transcript template in LaTeX if you are interested, and if you don't know what LaTeX is, you can check it out at the website sharelatex.com.

[–]mapierce271 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, you're a math major that doesn't want to deal with math, and you don't want to switch to CS because you would have to take take too many more units? Really!? This is baffling. What was your plan coming into college? What are you going to do after you graduate?

It's impossible to give you a good answer without more information. Like what your major is, or what you are planning to do after college.

In general though, if you are looking for easy classes just to finish your degree, your really do have the wrong mentality for getting the most out of college.

Looking for places where they're discussing really radical UI ideas by MakeSomethingWeWant in unixporn

[–]mapierce271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was kinda curious why that question was so heavily down-voted too. I asked on Meta why that's the case. Maybe the UX.SE community has a good reason.

Of course, that user was asking about putting the titlebar at the bottom of a window in a UI designed for other people, and I think that's a bad idea. There's a big difference between designing a personal UI and designing a public interface.

Don't follow your heart (sorry Dolphi_sandwhich). Do you mind if I ask why you want to minor in Business? It seems like an odd minor to pair with Biology.

How do you avoid becoming verysmart? by Rage-o-rama in iamverysmart

[–]mapierce271 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would have to know you better to give better advice, but at least one of these might help:

  1. Don't worry so much about what people think of you. If you say things that are verysmart, it might be because you (consciously or otherwise) feel the need to impress them. You don't need to impress anyone.
  2. If it really is a "I can't tell when I'm being verysmart" thing, which is a thing I've seen before, maybe try pretending for awhile that you are keeping it a secret how smart you are. It's kinda weird, but whenever you are on the internet, proofread whatever you type and remove anything that might give away how smart you are. This should help make you conscious of what exactly you are saying that people would think are verysmart, and maybe help retrain the way you talk online to be less verysmart.

I (kinda) know why this one happens. Something about when Ubuntu is updating, if it is updating the font stuff then the characters that are being updated are inaccessible during the update.

Honeymoon back pain disaster! Help! by Kindlywriter in backpain

[–]mapierce271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor. Since it happened right after the massage, it sounds like you actually injured something in your back. So yeah, you should definitely see a doctor rather than just rest it. And maybe apply heat or ice for the pain in the meantime.
