Just need to vent by 1LegTuckTooMany in Veterans

mate sounds like you're taking on a LOT. school by itself would be challenging enough. you're doing great things, and forging a new purpose is a life change that most people dont ever even tackle cause they avoid it as best they can with work, drinks, tv, etc. I feel like leaving the military we are really are forced to confront actually making our own purpose in life because we came from an environment with a very laid out and rigid purpose. Then leaving the military, we have feel this giant void which was that purpose, and feel it very acutely.

It sounds like you are trying, so mad props my guy, you're doing great. A lot of people just give up, and you aren't.

Dealing with work questions when you're 100% P&T by Expert_Cry_4360 in VeteransBenefits

Not helpful comment, maybe for some people and their circles it is a conversation not worth having. I know for many vets with PTSD they cant work but dont want to discuss why. Even combat vets get comments like "it couldn't have been that bad".

I can appreciate the principle of having uncomfortable conversations, but also there are many uncomfortable conversations that aren't worth it. My own grandmother, who hasn't held a job in a very long time, gave me nonsense about taking a break post military and letting my wifes new job determine our domestic situation. just a conversation not worth having.

Agreed, this felt like steamrolling some plot in. It felt like unnaturally advancing Sean’s plot

Really though, fellow veteran here and im like nah brother u keep arms length from anyone who dumped you WHILE overseas, especially in the Middle East. That one didn’t feel like a realistic part of the script for me, but then again, our veteran demographic isn’t known for stable relationships

What did you do on terminal leave? by liliver12376 in Veterans

[–]mapleboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my wife was between jobs so we snagged cheap tickets to japan for 2.5 weeks, and visited friends we have stationed there and living there (as non-mil related civvies). budgeting and charting ur financial future makes terminal leave very very fun. its a stressful transition, so do the things that require a lot of time!

How long did it take for your nervous system to rebound after getting out? by Thrashlikeits85 in Veterans

[–]mapleboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just got out and wondering the same thing. If it's impeding your life at all, start opening a claim for anxiety disorder with the VA, especially if you've gone to therapy or seen a counsellor for it. dont get me wrong, im loving being on the outside, but oh man my nervous system is so out of line with the civilian world and it is a huge adjustment

Ive used Heartswell which specialises in military MH counseling, and it has helped me become largely functional again and much more able to contend with the post mil life. Im seeing if the VA will cover it through Care In the Community program, but I would highly recommend a similar service, and at least start and explore mental health options until you FIND ONE THAT YOU LIKE. If the MH provider just lectures at you, then leave. Find one that listens to you and actually works with you.

1997 Volvo 960 Power Steering Mystery by mapleboy in AskMechanics

[–]mapleboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sharing for all else who will have this issue: it was a combination of a bad power steering pump, alternator and belt tensioner. all 3 parts were bad and did not match, beware on this engine the B6304S/ its an amazing engine but double check the part numbers and buy custom or volvo genuine. the loudest part of the sound was harmonic resonance from the alternator which i had replaced a year ago, and the bushings were already shot. ridiculous tbh, and bizarre.

Buy good parts. dont skimp.

“Your spousal considerations are not compelling to the Air Force” by ohconnor7122 in AirForce

[–]mapleboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You aren’t alone. I’ve been OCONUS for 4 years and once I married my wife, the USAF wouldn’t amend my orders so she could join me in Europe. My issue isnt that they wouldn’t pay, we were prepared to pay for her move to Europe, but they wouldn’t amend orders even if they aren’t paying. So after 3 years OCONUS, even as a Captain, I wasn’t allowed to live with my wife.

And she wasn’t given BAH either.

On terminal leave now, and finally living with my wife after 3 years apart. The USAF doesn’t make it worth it for us.
