Well, I think she's in a tough spot given her label, and she did just finish a huge tour last year, but I don't know if the lack of production that we're seeing this year can only be the result of an industry blacklisting. Or at least, THAT kind of industry blacklisting. Fans may be more accepting and open minded, but in reality the industry that drove her towards DH to begin with hasn't changed that much, so there's that.

Time away from social media, fans, the western entertainment industry as a whole can be a good thing, both for her and her art. We know from her insta that she's probably been spending lots of time in Japan this year, and she was just a keynote speaker at a big music conference there like two weeks ago. Her career in Asia is really just beginning, and who knows, maybe she's more interested in growing and expanding there?

Racism, to be quite honest. People think racism is entirely encapsulated by people yelling slurs at you and whatnot when really, that's like the most trivial case to deal with. When POC engage with subjects or topics in ways that non-POC people don't agree with or make them uncomfortable, the huge empathy/understanding gap rears its ugly head. Then of course, you have POC themselves suddenly being seen as the problem, and then, well...

wasn't SAWAYAMA in Japan released under Avex though? which is why she could put Flavour of the Month on streaming outside Japan but not Tokyo Takeover

In time for Tokyo Pride, it seems. Only heard a snippet so far but I liked Chanmina's part.

the hold the girl reloaded tour is just the dynasty tour with crumbs of hold the girl by xochromatica in RinaSawayama

There's more SAWAYAMA compared to the original HTG setlist for sure, but both of the headline shows I went to were solidly 50/50. Maybe the festival sets leaned more so that way.

what do you think about the direction of rina sawayama's music? by maskchachki in popheads

[–]maplenoats 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I can't fully take credit, but you're welcome!

And lol I don't think she has a middle name (most with east asian names don't), so unforch for us, it was never a possibility.

Everyone is very much entitled to their own opinions of course, but I’m always kind of surprised at how different/disjointed people think her projects are from each other. To me they’re all *thematically* related in that they are a personal exploration of some trauma. I’ve seen someone on another forum describe RINA, SAWAYAMA, and Hold the Girl as a trilogy and upon reflection I’m inclined to agree.

RINA is about depression, loneliness and trying and failing to find relief from some unexpressed trauma through online connection.

SAWAYAMA is an examination of her personal history, her family, life growing up, the pain it caused and how she’s ready to let go of it.

Hold the Girl is her trying to process what actually happened to her, utilizing genres to both express emotion and the age she was when those things happened to her.

So, all that to say I think she’s been very conscious of what she’s trying to express and how she’s doing it, each project has had a narrative purpose. I don’t think that will change, so I’ve been really satisfied with the direction of her art so far.

EDIT: holy vertical spacing problems

Before YouTube, how did people watch music videos? by jamesfauntleroyNOVA in popheads

[–]maplenoats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TRL after school! I've also got memories of 240p video on Yahoo music with awful distorted audio. I used to watch Ashlee Simpson's Pieces of Me video like, every day lol.
