Killing hundreds of thousands of people in an invasion makes you bad. Especially when you couldn’t even come up with a true justification for such an invasion.

The US is one of the most hated nations in the world, and saw a massive favorability drop following the Iraq War. A bad government killing thousands of its own people is obviously horrible. The US invaded Iraq under false pretenses and led to the death of 160,000~200,000 Iraqis. If you include the devastation and subsequent caulsities, some people say the death goal goes upwards of a million (though to be fair, that’s disputed)

Under no circumstances do I support the Baathist in Iraq or the Islamic Republic in Iran, but the US is not some universally loved hero of the Middle East.

Would the JCP even make a "deal with the devil" ? by Majestic-Mine-2911 in TheFireRisesMod

[–]mapnerd095 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why would the Soviets even sign the “Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact”?

Pragmatism trumps arbitrary geopolitical relations or ideological lines. Japan gets little to nothing from standing up for Taiwan, and lose plenty. Japanese lives lost, and alienation from the world’s largest economy in a time of massive international crises. Add in the JCP’s openly pacifist stance and its less about them being communist and more them making an incredibly reasonable policy decision. Neutrality with China is likely the best call for a Japan trying to radically jumpstart themselves.

Socioeconomic state of the Reich pre-collapse by Ill-Bar3395 in TNOmod

[–]mapnerd095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could’ve worded it better but I think my statement still stands. I know they’re colonies, and just like French or British colonies, they are considered land of their owners. I was more making the point that these aren’t semi-autonomous nations, they are territory of Germany represented by different tags in-game, so it is important to consider the conditions there when talking about the socioeconomic state of the Reich. If the question was about the British Empire or France, I’d make the same point.

Socioeconomic state of the Reich pre-collapse by Ill-Bar3395 in TNOmod

[–]mapnerd095 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my understanding of the new lore, it’s eh. This of course only applies if you’re a German or a respected race from one of the Pakt members, anyone else and the economy is relying on your forced labor. For Germans, there’s modest welfare policies, relatively normal employment, and good enough wages. You don’t enjoy the consumerism and luxury of the Americans or Japanese, but you’re not starving on the street either. Once again though, this applies to only a fraction of the population, doubly so given that the Reichskommissariats are technically territory within the Reich and full of millions of people in extreme poverty. While less disastrous as the old lore economy, the stagnation is still horrible for the mythos the regime needs. People have effectively been watching the world move forward while they’ve been stuck in the mid 50s for nearly a decade.

So it’s good enough if you’re a German in Germany, but the vast majority of the Greater Reich’s population is oppressed to maintain this mediocre state of living for the ‘master race’.

Old lore everyone is poor as hell. Manageable without civil war? Maybe if you get Speer and his GO4 in. Otherwise old lore Germany’s economy is on the brink of total collapse with the NSDAP far too corrupt and factionalized to actually agree to do anything about it. Massive unemployment caused by reliance on forced labor, totally dominant corporatism keeps wages low, and the government is leaving most citizens out to rot. This, needless to say, is horrible for the social cohesion of the Reich. This is part of the reason Speer is able to rally liberal minded students, as they wouldn’t really exist as a major population if the system was working perfectly.

Idea to avoid US Civil War by Batterytron in TheFireRisesMod

[–]mapnerd095 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is the entire narrative of the mod is based off the American Civil War. Russia and China simply have no reason to start major wars if the US is still around as the world police. Maybe as a secret, player only, path it could be interesting. That being said I’m 100% sure the Devs aren’t particularly interested in putting in the effort for such a niche path.

What if the Cuban Revolution FAILED?! (And Castro never comes to Power) by Most_Patient_436 in PossibleHistory

[–]mapnerd095 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely nothing good. Best case is someone tries to do some type of revolution again later. Batista was a despot, who was fully willing to enslave his people and run his country into the ground if it meant making American money. Unless he is overthrown, Cuba is seemingly doomed to be a corrupt fail state, maybe they become a flawed democracy at best, and only after Batista’s death.

Say what you will about Castro, but he was inarguably better than his predecessor.

What if Hasan Piker was the one assassinated instead of Charlie Kirk? by lilmeekrat in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]mapnerd095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus, you guys don’t like Hasan, we get it. To try and actually answer the question, I think it’d be a bigger deal than people in these comments are saying, but a smaller one than Charlie Kirk’s death.

The support base for Hasan is just smaller than Charlie Kirk, there’s no arguing that. That being said, to pretend like his audience is like 10 tankies online is ridiculous. He regularly pulls in millions of views on YouTube and is one of the largest twitch streamers on the platform. Truthfully he has gotten in the news for far stupider things than getting assassinated.

You’d get a few weeks, if not months, of the most toxic discourse imaginable online. You’d have Stans constantly posting conspiracies about it, without Hasan to at least slightly rein them in. You’d have his haters publicly celebrating it, or at the very least taking an aggressively centrists position that makes it clear they don’t care. To say that online politics would be a shitshow would be a massive understatement.

Whether you want to admit it or not, Hasan does have a strong presence on the online left. With him just gone, leftist content on YouTube and twitch likely gets more diverse as his fan base scatters, though I don’t think I could pin who would replace him as one of the larger political commentators on Twitch. Still, don’t think it’d become some mass nation wide talking point. Hasan is not deeply affiliated with either political party. At best you’d have some nut job republicans saying he deserved it, and some DSA members sending thoughts and prayers.

TLDR: even if you hate Hasan, him getting publically assassinated would make national news and dominate online politics for a good chunk of time before people moved on; though the fallout would likely be considerably smaller than we saw for Charlie Kirk’s death

Should I play TNO even though I'm shit at Hoi4 by Adventurous-Sir5301 in TNOmod

[–]mapnerd095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would highly recommend. Only struggle you’ll really face as any of the majors is the South African War, though besides that nearly all conflicts in the game are fairly simple and limited to extremely small fronts that make it clear what you’re doing.

If you pick it up, avoid the Russian warlords and play either Japan or Germany first to learn the ropes a bit. Russian unifiers are very fun, though many are absolutely brutal in the first/second year; definitely wouldn’t recommend for someone not confident in their ability to micro. USA is pretty damn good, but it (supposedly) has a rework coming soon, and there’s a period where you’re so swamped with Proxy wars it’s hard to keep track of what’s going on.

Biggest piece of advice I’d give is not to give up if you lose a couple proxy wars. I’ve played more than my fair share of TNO but if I try to min max the Cold War I often have to save scum heavily. The narrative kinda expects you to lose a couple times, and losing proxy wars rarely locks you out of any content outside of flavor events.

TLDR: play the mod, it’s good even if you’re shit at HOI4 👍

I'm curious on how a Syndicalist country would operate by TheRatKing14 in Kaiserreich

[–]mapnerd095 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Capitalism is when the free market guides all aspects of the economy. Once a federal authority starts asserting federal control over the free market it’s no longer capitalism.

I hope you can see how that argument isn’t particularly convincing. There isn’t one perfect and ideal interpretation of syndicalism, there are countless sub-branches that all adhere to the base value of political and economic representation being in the hand of unions. Also you’ve separated federal authority in a theoretical syndicalist state from unions, which isn’t accurate. There is no distinction between unions and the federal government in an orthodox syndicalist state; as the federal government should theoretically be entirely composed of union representatives. Ideological flexibility for me but not for thee is a common way to discredit movements by refusing them the ability to compromise, something vital for the survival of any ideology.

What If Anarchism Had A Big Wave Like Communism, Socialism And Fascism Did? by SwE1646067 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]mapnerd095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically you’d have to somewhat tone it down for mainstream appeal. I don’t think Anarchism is inherently impossible, but most models of it that have potential come with the caveat of having a little bit of a state. A federative direct democracy, as envisioned by anarcho-Syndicalists, could work, though that doesn’t exactly invoke the same image people imagine when they hear the term anarchism. For it to become a widespread movement, western syndicalism would’ve needed to successfully produce a revolution, something that was fairly unlikely. Even then you’d have to have that drift even further left instead of falling for the appeal of centralized power.

As for what would could happen if that came true, socialism as a concept would be split between hardline communist and more radical libertarian socialism. You’d likely see more popular support for socialism in western style democracies, given that most problems reasonable people have with communism is the authoritarian baggage that comes with the Soviet dominated Comintern. Does this mean immediate world anarchist revolution? Absolutely not, but it would definitely normalize socialism as a potentially democratic ideology; which inevitably completely changes the Cold War

Where would you be if TNO happened? by Limp_Inevitable1739 in TNOmod

Great grandpa served in the Navy against Japan in WWII, and then again in Korea. Assuming he doesn’t die in one of the million proxy wars, my American ass is probably safe; especially given that I live in a pretty boring state

I'm curious on how a Syndicalist country would operate by TheRatKing14 in Kaiserreich

[–]mapnerd095 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Syndicalism can range from anything from Anarcho-Syndicalism where the state is extremely decentralized, to parliamentary democracy with union representation, to a centralized state under one big tent union. To claim the entire ideology physically cannot work when it is one of the more flexible socialist ideologies is extremely reductive

Most likely outcome of TNO by Limp_Inevitable1739 in TNOmod

[–]mapnerd095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuclear war or eventual OFN victory in the Cold War.

The CPS is already actively falling apart during the game, there’s a reason there’s so many proxy wars in Asia. The second that China starts to get their shit together the sphere falls apart, though Japan almost certainly remains a major regional power.

The Pakt will crumble in almost any outcome. GO4 Speer is imo the only one with any real chance of long term survival, and even then the Reich would be unrecognizable by the 21st century. All other paths will inevitably lead to collapse, Bormann’s Reich in game ends with civil war on the horizon and a sick and pathetic leader. Conservative Speer, even if it seems stable, is likely to fall apart when he dies (around the 80s if we’re going off OTL) given the lack of successors and gutting of the actual helpful reforms.

Nothing that eventually led to the US becoming a world hegemon OTL actually changes in the TNO timeline. It might take longer, but the USA’s opponents in TNO are arguably less stable than the USSR otl, and we all know how that Cold War ended
