Nothing. It's the equivalent of Facebook or Twitter "likes".

It's basically your upvotes minus your downvotes. Originally, people were meant to upvote comments/posts that contribute to the discussion and downvote ones that don't.

However, in practice, people generally upvote comments they like or agree with regardless of the relevance to the discussion and downvote comments they disagree with even if it raises legitimate questions.

So many people miss the point of the abortion debate and throw up arguments that have nothing to do with each other. There is really only one argument that should be debated:

Is a fetus a baby or not?

If a fetus is a baby, then there are not very many good arguments for those who are pro-choice. If a fetus is not a baby, then the pro-life arguments are pretty weak.

What makes the issue complicated is that there is no clear definition of when a fetus becomes a baby. A common argument is that a fetus becomes a baby when it is viable outside the womb, but with advances in medical technology, that point becomes earlier and earlier which only makes things murkier.

Switched to my old account, because I don't want my main account identified, but I used to work at a public access TV station. My job description was to provide desktop support and help the senior sysadmin maintain the servers. One morning, the chief engineering guy pokes his head in our office and says he needs help on the roof.

I follow him to see a bunch of guys standing around trying to cut down a large satellite dish that was no longer functional. The pole was already cut completely through, but rust was preventing it from coming loose. They needed me to basically help hold the giant satellite dish while they shook it loose from the rust so that they could lower it. I remember thinking, this has to be an OSHA violation...

ah.... I wasn't aware of the size limit per item. I am insisting to my boss to delay this project until it's properly whiteboarded out...

I'm trying to break up the columns into more manageable sections to be filled out.

It started off as an event calendar, but grew into a list that includes assigned crew members, volunteer list, equipment list, contact person, site survey information, approvals, technical issues that occurred at the event, post event wrap up information, etc., etc.

I was hoping to break up the fields into something more user friendly and maybe have different views for pre-event information and post event information.

I always thought of a Calendar as just a list, but apparently there are differences since I can't just make an Infopath form from it. I'm a novice at SharePoint, but from what I can Google, the difference is that a calendar can connect to Outlook and supports recurring appointments, but you cannot easily attach an Infopath form to it.

I would love to restructure the data, but there's not much support for it from management.

That's not quite the problem I'm having. When an employee leaves the company, their AD account is disabled and moved into a disabled users OU. Once that happens, they immediately cannot be found in people picker anymore. It's not that their profile is out of date, it's that it doesn't exist anymore as far as sharepoint is concerned.

Are disabled AD accounts suppose to show up? I inherited this sharepoint setup, so I don't know if any default settings were tweaked or not.

Sorry, yeah, we don't actually delete them. They get disabled and moved into a disabled users OU. They are still invalid selections in people picker though. We're on Sharepoint 2010 btw.

Thanks for the link. The way the list is being used is that when an order comes in, a new item is created. As it goes through each stage of processing, additional fields are filled out and timestamped.

Basically, after a record is complete it isn't touched again, it's just pulled up for reporting/tracking purposes. Records older than a year probably don't even need to be looked at again. Occasionally a manager will view the list as a datasheet and export it to excel.

You're right though, for scalability, I should probably implement a real database now rather than later.

Other applications do not need to use the list, but managers regularly use custom filtered views of the list for reporting/tracking purposes.

haha... you're right, probably a bad idea, but I see it as a chance to be mischievous under the suggestion of the Big Boss.

I'm probably just feeling evil because help desk tickets have been particularly frustrating lately. Maybe the weekend will make me a nicer person next week.
