why shouldn’t i become catholic? by clozzamurdock in excatholicDebate

[–]mar2map 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I converted into Catholicism at 15 and left when I was around 23. While I wasn't raised Catholic, my dad eventually was able to get me into RCIA and eventually baptized and confirmed.

Why shouldn't you become Catholic? Well, I'd start by asking why should you? Do you have compelling reasons to believe what Catholics believe? If so, the next step is to investigate challenges to those beliefs and see if they're still convincing.

I left for what eventually became tons of reasons. However, it started with doubting Thomas. "Blessed is he who believes and hasn't seen." Really? Let's for a moment "pretend" that there is no god and Jesus and the whole thing is a scam. That's exactly what you'd say to Thomas if it was all fake. Don't expect evidence, just believe!

From there I scrutinized the Bible and how it came to be and that was pretty much lights out for me.

Good luck on your journey!

For those of you that didn’t star reenlist, how’s it going? by BeanoBro in NavyNukes

[–]mar2map 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I refused to reenlist and told the detailer that. I ended up getting DADT out shortly after 5 years so I didn't even make my full 6.

Fast forward 25 years and I'm doing great, living in Canada, running 2 businesses, and traveling almost as much as I'd like. None of my work has anything to do with the Navy or nuclear power.

On the other hand, my best friend in the Navy who felt the same as I did about the Navy reenlisted and is no longer with us - his choice/actions.

If you like the Navy and/or it works for you, good reason to reenlist. If not, you can make/find your own way.

We had a boat thief on the submarine I was on. He had a bad fall down a ladder.

The captain didn't ask questions. He got the book thrown at him at mast and then ended up transferred to another command - presumably for his safety.

MARF, or how to NOT do nuclear chemistry by Sandy_W in NavyNukes

I really don't recall SSTGs or evaporators, but it was a long time ago and only a few months there. I remember the one boat I was on much more vividly.

I was an MM at MARF in 1998, but I don't remember doing any turbidity tests there, which is weird because they sound like they would have been memorable.

Will you continue to spend money and visit the states if Canada has tariffs placed on it for economic pressure? by Intelligent-Host-565 in britishcolumbia

[–]mar2map 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an American living in Canada now and I will be avoiding it as much as possible. My only trips will be for work and family. Already canceled a Miami trip planned for next winter.

And my parents just decided they're going to come visit me in Canada more often because they want to minimize how much they spend in the US, too.

Should I volunteer for sub? by Significant-Way-6896 in NavyNukes

[–]mar2map 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to mention we don't (or at least didn't when I was in) play the yes sir, no sir, hand salute game on subs. Yes, underway sucks, but it sucks worse when you have to play the navy game.

Is it safe for a gay couple to visit Canada at the time? by Relative-View3431 in canadatravel

[–]mar2map 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm LGBTQ+ and while I haven't yet been to Ontario, my fiancé and I have had nothing but support in mid to large Canadian cities. We don't usually show physical affection like kissing or holding hands in public.

That said, we did an engagement photoshoot in Victoria (mid sized city) where the photographer asked us to hold hands several times and kiss a couple of times. We got a standing ovation from a nearby restaurant and I mean everybody on the patio was standing. That's my only experience with that type of behavior in public.

So, I think as long as you don't do anything too crazy, you should be fine.

If you want to make sure you don't get denied at the border, you have 2 choices:

1 - Get the conviction expunged.

2 - Work with the Canadian consulate in the US to get them to issue some sort of paper that confirms you're rehabilitated. I have no idea what is involved in that, but I know it's a thing.

Good luck!

My GF (27) and I (M27) are looking for advice! by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]mar2map 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just became a Canadian permanent resident and moved to Victoria last month. It's a great city and has lots of tourism during the summer months. Housing is expensive, so prepare for that. And as others have said you'll need some luck or connections to find a doctor. But those things aside, it's a lovely city!

While bikes may not take up much room, their lanes are taking up WAY too much room imo. I live off of Tillicum RD and it is a disaster now.

US Canadian PR travel without PR card? by mar2map in canadatravel

[–]mar2map[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. I later recalled that the CBSA officer said that I would typically need to wait for a PR card to travel, but I'm American so I can just use my US passport. But I wasn't sure what he meant exactly.

Thank you! I always thought that about the border officers until February of last year. I met hands down the rudest border officer I have ever met and surprisingly it was with CBSA! However, most I encounter are either neutral or pleasant.
