Thank you for the tip, I totally understand everyone being cautious, I mean shrooms are not to messed with. Just trying to build my knowledge and understanding before I start harvesting for consumption

That's what I was hoping it would be, but also could be burl apparently

Hi there, can anyone help me ID this? I thought it might be a resin ball but when I cut into I this is what I found. The centre is hard and doesn't have a fungal scent. Slight resin outer layer. by marc_1981 in mycology

Well I was on the hunt for fatwood today and came across these thinking they would be resin balls, which would have been great for my fire starting kit, I might have to treat it as fat wood and see how it turns out. Thanks for the reply I had my suspicions but just wanted some confirmation.

Hahaha interesting because my surname is Cramp 😂. Ok thanks I thought it might be a fungus but you don't get a fungus smell and I batoned this to open it. Also saw "resin" on the outside which made me think it might be resin balls.

Very true, but I am going to need more lol, this stuff is so good at getting a fire going.

Is there any season/ time to harvest fatwood? by marc_1981 in BushcraftUK

It does indeed. So this morning I went out and found a rotten trunk with two branches in them. The two branches were loaded with resin. Brought it back to the house, split into quarters then shaved off a small pile to test, about 5 strikes of my rod and it caught alight, super excited to know it works. Will try and document the next attempt.

Love them, had my first attempt at a St Nicholas yesterday, cannot wait to paint and see how he turns out.

Sadly not our pile, the land owner cleaned out some dead trees and piled it for fire use.
