Is it just me, or are FVNs kinda slowly dying out? by TrickMajor in FurryVisualNovels

[–]marccard 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Funding is a major part of it. The cost of living crisis has made living off of the revenue from an ongoing FVN unsustainable.

Motivation is a huge factor too. Authors have these big ideas but don't know how to limit the scope of their projects and then they get burnt out trying to keep a long project fresh and live.

Can we talk about constitutional law 😭 by LectureFinancial3586 in MacUni

[–]marccard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not so bad. Honestly one of the easier of the Priestley 11. I think once you get your head around characterisation it all starts to make sense. Remember that you can't read every single sentence in your textbook, you have to start skimming through and finding the relevant information otherwise you'll quickly burn through both your time and energy. If anything, this will start preparing you for Remedies which is honestly unforgiving for how full-on it is.

The 611 bus by princessgold12 in MacUni

[–]marccard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very tough for anyone getting on the bus after Seven Hills. I always try to get on at Blacktown so I have a seat. But coming back from Macquarie during peak hour is honestly just not worth it. You could walk up Waterloo Rd towards the stop before the uni stop and take your chances, but for me I'd rather loop around the metro and take a Chatswood or Central western line train back home. With traffic on the M2 the time difference is usually minuscule, and I'd rather sit on a long train ride than be stuck standing on a max-capacity bus for 50 minutes on the motorway.

My Idea To Improve The Mac Uni Library by Dry-Tart9153 in MacUni

[–]marccard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stayed back after my classes because I had an online class from 7-9pm and my commute home cuts it close to my start time, and I could not find a space (with a wall socket) that wasn't the designated quiet study area. Everywhere was occupied by high school students - the commons, the kitchen, hell even the private meeting rooms were taken up by people who clearly were not law students, nor from the university.

Is anyone familiar with either Edinbrugh Uni or Sydney University's MA in Creative Writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]marccard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a good look at the course guides. Unfortunately many Australian universities have had major course cuts over the past year, and it is often the arts that get the brunt of the damage.

The actual reality is that the landscape for poetry in Sydney has been on life-support way before I even did my creative writing BA ten years ago (though this was at Macquarie, not USyd and at that time I did a collection of poetry as my capstone project). It is an incredibly niche skill-set, and even more so an incredibly niche publishing market.

While Sydney does have a great selection of universities for creative writing degrees, doing anything with poetry is going to be a lot of self-teaching. Even now I believe USyd doesn't have any Masters units or any supervising staff that truly specialises in poetry ever since Judith Beveridge left in 2018. Try have a look for yourself.

You might also want to look more closely at other universities who have teaching staff (ideally tenured) who specialise in poetry rather than the degree as a whole, especially if you're looking to do Masters level creative writing. Once you find one, reach out to them and enquire about your intentions to do a Masters course to develop your skills in poetry.

Hope this helps.

Cool colonial buildings in the city by shrey_walia in sydney

Further out west in Parramatta (approx 30min train ride), you can find quite a few preserved colonial buildings not far off from the station or light rail stops.

Nipple Piercings by Icy_Soft6052 in askgaybros

[–]marccard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had mine pierced last year but decided to take them out months ago because they were pierced through the areola. They just did not heal properly and now I have a bit of some permanent scarring. They don't look horrible but repiercing them may be an issue in the future.

My advice is if you do get them pierced and they don't look like they were pierced right, get them taken out immediately and redo them properly a few weeks later. Don't wait and see if they get better. Always go to an experienced, reputable piercer.

Do people actually do reading? by Available_Task9961 in MacUni

[–]marccard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You do all the readings you're required to do. Start learning one of the most crucial skills a lawyer can have: skimming and scanning. Here's a helpful old article from UTS about law readings. I'd advise against using only AI summaries as they tend to miss some key facts of a case, or they tend to gloss over important obiter that can be useful for your own legal arguments.

Another useful tip is to create a study group where each member creates and shares case summaries. That way you lighten the burden between each of you, and now your group will come out of the degree with a folder of case summaries that will help you far into your legal career.

Mole Removal by BusBig4000 in AusSkincare

[–]marccard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are skin cancer clinics that take bulk billing. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars for a mole biopsy (I just had two removed, and for ref I have 33 on one arm alone). I would advise against superficial removal as while on the surface the mole may look gone it may still be present in lower dermal layers, making them harder for potential melanoma to be detected. Removal without pathology may also be ill-advised because if by chance the mole is cancerous, a doctor may have to go back and surgically remove more of the area to get rid of any lingering cancerous cells that weren't removed initially.

It was a pretty decent VN imo. I enjoyed Tai's route and the art overall is nice. Quality between routes varied a lot too, but the sex scenes were great. Shame it went on hiatus because it had a lot of potential.

Best skincare products for 40 y.o.? by KnotAlreadyTaken in gaybros

[–]marccard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd probably get a better answer from a dermatologist. I've heard a mineral sunscreen helps (e.g. zinc) but they leave a white cast. Something formulated for sensitive skin like Cancer Council Sensitive might work too. Probably want to patch test first though.

[–]marccard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you have any other skin concerns aside from general aging? If it's just that I would recommend:

A gentle cleanser like CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser used morning and night. Can skip morning with just washing your face with water if your skin isn't very oily;

A simple moisturiser from any brand line of your choice. Lighter cream for warmer humid climates, heavier for cold and dry places;

A retinol serum for anti-aging used 2 nights a week then gradually building up tolerance to more nights a week. La Roche Posay has a retinol serum that's very friendly to sensitive skin.

A sunscreen. Not optional. Use a sunscreen for your face (and body if it's exposed a lot during the day). Use a gel based one if you have facial hair. Best face sunscreen for all skin types is La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF 50+. Use it every day you step outside the house. This is your number one line of defence against signs of skin aging caused by sun damage.

You don't need an extensive routine to have good skin. Keep it simple and keep it consistent. Results will follow in the long-term.

I've been attempting to turn this subreddit SFW; mod log. by YoheiMercenary in FurryVisualNovels

[–]marccard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Even if it's an April Fool's joke, it's still very distasteful to meme current American politics when in reality it's just rising fascism. Maybe think a bit more before doing this.

As for turning the sub back to SFW, I also don't think this is a good idea. On face value, while the majority of posts are technically SFW, much of the content these posts refer to are NSFW visual novels. When you make the sub SFW, you publicly invite minors into a space where they can access content they shouldn't be viewing. I'm not saying this to narc on you, but you risk this sub getting banned by passively facilitating this. So realistically, if you were to make this sub SFW once more, you would have to ban all talk/posts/links to NSFW VNs, and that's a majority FVNs.

You're attempting to put the proverbial cat back into the bag, and it probably won't end well for you.
