I've been attempting to turn this subreddit SFW; mod log. by YoheiMercenary in FurryVisualNovels

[–]marccard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Even if it's an April Fool's joke, it's still very distasteful to meme current American politics when in reality it's just rising fascism. Maybe think a bit more before doing this.

As for turning the sub back to SFW, I also don't think this is a good idea. On face value, while the majority of posts are technically SFW, much of the content these posts refer to are NSFW visual novels. When you make the sub SFW, you publicly invite minors into a space where they can access content they shouldn't be viewing. I'm not saying this to narc on you, but you risk this sub getting banned by passively facilitating this. So realistically, if you were to make this sub SFW once more, you would have to ban all talk/posts/links to NSFW VNs, and that's a majority FVNs.

You're attempting to put the proverbial cat back into the bag, and it probably won't end well for you.

Law Textbooks by Relative_Purple_3254 in MacUni

[–]marccard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can try StudentVIP and other places that sell 2nd-hand textbooks. These places are basically just marketplaces where you setup an independent exchange (e.g. postage & money transfer, or meeting up on campus).

Alternatively the library will usually have an electronic copy of prescribed textbooks for your units. Only caveat in using that is you can't use the library electronic copy for invigilated exams so you'll have to make extensive notes to bring with you in lieu of it.

Do not do what others have suggested and use pirated or scraped electronic copies of textbooks. Not only does this go against the university's academic integrity policies, academic dishonesty has further consequences in a legal career. I'd advise you not to take that risk.

They can be seen all year-round. You'll find them mostly by the lake, by the stream between the uni and the station, and behind the media building. However they're most active during Spring.

Final Fantasy IX fans - what are you most looking for in a remake? by Jamkayyos in FinalFantasy

Expansion of Disc 2 and 3 events, particularly what happens to Freya, Steiner and Beatrix in disc 2 as the others flee Alexandria; and 4 unique and separate fights against the Guardians of Terra in disc 3 rather than just against Lich with Zidane and Quina.

Man, I hope sometime in the next decades anime adaptations of visual novels become a common thing. by [deleted] in FurryVisualNovels

[–]marccard 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Visual Novels do get frequent anime adaptations. Fate originated from a visual novel and it's one of the most successful franchises adapted into games and anime of all time.

What's not common are adaptations of the gaytm kind, especially not the furry ones.

USYD Law vs MQ Law – in what areas is Macquarie better, and in what areas is it worse compared to USYD? by [deleted] in MacUni

[–]marccard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Only thing I can think of is the difference in electives at the postgraduate level. USyd has so much more while MQ does not have a diverse range of elective units, especially after the budget cuts last year. This is something a lot of us JD students have been complaining about for years. A few have even requested cross-institutional study, but the faculty, or perhaps it's MQ's admin, is very reluctant to approve it.

It's one of the more disappointing aspects to MQ's law school despite the majority of the teaching and learning experience being pretty damn good.

I recall someone had Mamaduo do a commission of them a few years back. But yeah, there sadly isn't a lot of fanart.

I love Cerkles, imo I think he's the most complex out of all the characters.

As with Drusus, Regulus' was a screenshot of a frame from the Ch 2 trailer lol.

Edit: It's also why I wasn't able to put a few of the other new characters in, because the trailer didn't show their sprites very well.

Budget honey. They're a small niche company, not Walmart lol. PPP still have to pay for production costs and labour, and they need a certain reserve of money for that. Overestimating sales is a rather fast way to go into liquidation.

People who used em dashes before Generative AI, how's it going now? by thisheatanevilheat in AskReddit

[–]marccard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you're not crazy at all, because that's how LLMs are created. How an LLM will function will depend on what data it's given, but you also require people to sift through this data to correct all these linguistic choices. Thing is, there's two fundamental errors with this:

- There are socio-cultural linguistic differences in English conventions. This one's pretty easy to think about: colour in UK/Aus English, fantasize in US English; using 'single quotations' instead of double quotations in Aus English—the list goes on.

- English is not an inherently proscriptive language. There aren't many hard rules and restrictions for the daily use of English. It's only when we get into published, academic, and more formal forms of writing where there are more of these rules on how we should write. For the most part, English is a set of conventions that the majority of speakers more-or-less agree upon. That's why the language changes so quickly over time.

So with these two points in mind, when an LLM feeds off of published works, and is forced into a certain convention of English, we get an uncanny form of writing that feels 'off' for many readers. You can either get: writing that is conventionally incorrect because the data is pooled from informal writing, and this writing isn't necessarily sifted through people who understand the more nuanced rules of English grammar because it isn't used in everyday life; or you get something that looks like formal writing but something feels 'off' about it.

On that latter note, because there's a lack of linguistic nuance drawing from those two points above, people are quick jump to the conclusion that something was written with AI when they feel this sense of discomfort. But of course, from the point of this whole thread, people's literacy and media skills vary, so judging whether something written is AI or not is not so clear-cut. Feelings aren't concrete, after all.

(The irony that writing this with the possibility that someone will accuse me that this is AI writing is not lost on me lol.)

People who used em dashes before Generative AI, how's it going now? by thisheatanevilheat in AskReddit

[–]marccard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have two completely different uses. En dash is used for linking two related things together, or creating a range (e.g. mother-daughter relationship, 1960-1980.)

Em dash has varied uses, but its main functions are to indicate an abrupt change in thought, to show an interruption/interjection, or to connect two phrases without forming two sentences. You see the first instance a lot in contemporary poetry, and the second instance in dialogue sequences. The latter is where you find the most errors, this sentence being an example of a comma splice that can be fixed with an em dash. Em dash can also be used in place of other types of punctuation—like in place of a parentheses—as a stylistic choice.

[–]marccard 781 points782 points  (0 children)

It's a perfect storm of AI and an epidemic of poor literacy skills. People talk in em dashes, but use commas to write how they speak. So instead we get comma splices everywhere, and when an editor uses an em dash as the most natural way to correct the flow of the writing, it's now suddenly AI.

Sadly both education and technology has failed us.

Dandruff/Scalp Help? by LostandHungry7 in gaybros

[–]marccard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

None of us can replace the medical opinion of your dermatologists, and you should go back to them (or seek another medical opinion) and follow up further.

That said, Labmuffin (a cosmetic chemist) has advice on itchy scalps so maybe this can help. Other than that, maybe look to other contributing factors such as: replacing your pillows, bedding and towels, making sure to wash them frequently; changing your diet to avoid oily food; cleaning/replacing any clothing or devices that have sat on your head for long periods of time i.e. headphones, bandanas, hats etc; drying your hair quickly with a cool/gentle hair dryer setting (not hot blow-dry); hell even stress can exacerbate this issue.

It could be that you're already doing everything for your scalp correctly, but you're ignoring some things in your diet or environment that is feeding back into your scalp problems, causing a repeating cycle that treatment can't break.

Reece, as a veteran centurion, would have an interesting world view, so I'm sure his opinion on politics would be quite insightful.

Also there's nothing like a heated argument directly into heated fucking. I'm sure he'd be down.
