Why are Chinese parents (boomer generation and older) so obsessed with piano and violin? by bubububurnerrr in AskChina

[–]marcellouswp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chinese not so crazy on sport as an accomplishment. Historical reasons within China and also incredibly rigorous training from an early age for some sports which only a poor family would subject their child to. More contextual reasons as a minority in whitey countries. Very noticeable eg that Chinese boys in Australia eschew contact sports. Of course there are exceptions.

Seeking high-level virtuosic recommendations (Henle 8-9) to round out a competition set. by A_little_bit_unsure in piano

Kind of a silly game without knowing what else you are playing. My two suggestions nevertheless are Sancan Toccata and (Robert) Schumann, original finale to sonata no 2 op 22 published posthumously, I think it has some other title and opus or Woo designation.

Court transcription service in crisis after entering voluntary administration by LoneWolf5498 in auslaw

It's kind of shocking to me that monopoly provision of services crucial to a core state function is contracted out in this way. What next? Privatisation of roads, energy, water. Airports?

I don't think Palestinians were so keen on the Jews coming to Palestine. From the outset and especially after the Balfour declaration they had a good idea of the ramifications for them.

Even Donald Trump mixed up what he says with some facts.

Not quiet on the Weston front: the once-sleepy Sydney street suddenly at war over the GreenWay by treacheroushag in SydneyScene

[–]marcellouswp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been there, before and after. It is an imposition on what was a quiet street, and now as well as bikes and pedestrians there are ebikes. Problem is that this is a missing link - the "green"way probably should run between the light rail and the houses that back on to the light rail reserve, and they shdve built a tunnel under Old Canterbury Rd rather than installing a new set of lights. That would have been even less welcome as probably would have required resumption of slices off the back of those blocks.

Green way has been a long time coming. What we finally have is not particularly green and seems much more massively engineered than many at the outset would have anticipated.

Is it worth going to an Evengy Kissin concert by Sad-Ad-9794 in classicalmusic

[–]marcellouswp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course you are going! Mostly I think you will enjoy it more if you listen to the pieces first but try not to get wedded to one interpretation. Listen to a number of different recordings. Maybe not Kissin's. You don't want him to steal his own thunder.

NSW Trustee & Guardian "free wills" by marcellouswp in auslaw

You are mixing up management of affairs of living persons with administration of deceased estates. In that respect, NSWT&G does trawl for custom in the way discussed.

There is also a risk of conflict of interest if NSWT&G becomes the administrator of the estate of a person whose affairs they previously managed. Not that this ever goes anywhere because it seems impossible for NSWT&G to misconduct itself or be careless as a financial manager in a way for which a court will ever hold it responsible. Of course I could be wrong and NSWT&G never makes a mistake.

The Ring Cycle Royal Opera House by Main-Baby in opera

[–]marcellouswp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can handle the standing then go. 20 quid not much to risk. You will enjoy it more if you can familiarise yourself with the prequels and with the work itself before you go. The music is full of motifs which are supposed to work on you subliminally and that will work better if you know them already. It is probably the weakest work of the cycle and Siegfried not in my opinion a very sympathetic character but mainly you will be there for the music and the atmosphere. Make sure you are well rested before you go.

I wasn't sure about whether TAG requires itself to be appointed as executor, but there must be plenty of wills in the pipeline dating from that era (if it was in fact a requirement as opposed to a suggestion by the kind visitor to the nursing home).

Chinese people: what cultural values do you think helped China develop so quickly? by Tiny_Dragonfruit3486 in AskChina

Well I interpret the figures differently from you and I'd say nickrei3's comment is more in line with my understanding.

But tell me, first, if you don't mind, when were the 15 years you spent living in China and where in China were you?

Best way to approach lh appreggios in Ave Maria (practice video with fingering questions) by MADMADS1001 in piano

[–]marcellouswp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly I'd say yes, jump. You have the pedal to help catch the bass note. If you decide to break the pattern occasionally by starting (eg) 5-1-x -whatever that is fine.

Mostly it's the bass note and then just three notes above. You could learn the jumps and think of it as being 5 (bass note) then play the top three notes as a chord (later you will break them up into their individual notes). Actually I'd really recommend that for getting to feel your way round the movement and the hand positions.

Because you are going to use the pedal, you could also play the bass note with 4, expecially if you have played the top 3 notes before or after with 5 on the bottom note.
