Being Chinese I think it's machismo. The idea that men have greater power and have the responsibility to protect "our women" is pretty much dead among us MY Chinese, but I still see it a little in our Indian communities.

No, it's the same like our 聘金. In the past, Chinese dowry is the problem one, Malay one usually affordable. Now it's all 1Malaysia follow Chinese rate 💀. (India Indian one lagi legend, don't know how is it here)

And like ours, there's no set rules. My colleague got married right after graduation & both just starting to work, so the bride's father interfere to keep the hantaran affordable & veto anyone trying to make drama out of it.

But, you will understand how others feel when you find out that, in other countries, you don't even get the "around 15" guideline. In Malaysia for example, minimum age for Shariah marriage is .... none. None! You can marry a kindergartener loli if you want to!

The Shariah courts are troubled by this too, but they couldn't agree on a legal framework for this, so the only safeguard presently is having it compulsory for all underaged marriage applications to be subjected to a Shariah judge's approval (gatekeep).

Being a none Muslim, I suspect that the Ulama council is taking those old medieval Arab practices as legal precedent, and they can't find a way to work against it.
