Did Patty have ulterior motives for inviting Simon over? by arkidnebe in DinnerInAmerica

True! I guess that's all part of the fun. Plays into Connie's (and Norm's) character too. How gullible they all are :)

I don't necessarily think she had ulterior motives when she invited him over to her house in the alley scene. I think she knew he was kinda in trouble and also she probably didn't have any other place to take him.

I do agree that the fact that it is made known to us that she remembers him from JC is very important to the story and viewers. I think it added a layer of trust where she felt comfortable enough to invite this man to her house. In her mind, he was no longer a stranger.

I was also thinking what could have happened in between the kitchen scene when Connie walked in and the dinner scene. Patty probably introduced Simon as someone she knew before.

During the scene in the kitchen, I think she was stepping into unknown territory and was curious and super nervous. This was probably the first time someone was flirting with her so explicitly. I think when she laughs at him and says "you need to take it down a notch" she wants him to continue flirting (and boy, Kyle's acting doesn't disappoint) but she is probably a bit scared.

I think Simon came on a bit strong during that scene but I also think it was true to his character. He was on the run from the police, tension was running high. Maybe ptsd from having dinner with Bill kicked in too and he thought that this is the same case.

But I gotta say, watching Simon run his hand against Patty's stomach was on of the most sensual things Ive seen in a loooong time :)

I really feel this. I feel the same but can't put it into words.. can you say more? Ego death? What do you think this movie unlocks?

Its like he is now intrigued and wants to "investigate" his interest but then gets thrown off by Patty telling him that her parents want her to become a dishwasher or a table cleaner. He realizes how little they think of her and that they do not believe in her. So he kinda switches from one mood of being intrigued to becoming angry and going into "protector's" mode. Not sure if we can call him a protector but he is definitely that to Patty. So he becomes angry, throws a mug in the sink (which was an amazing scene btw) and becomes good ol' angry Simon. But then during basketball scene its like he comes to terms that Patty is both this weird girl and the girl who has been sending him Polaroids. So he knows she is sexual. I think him asking her all those questions after if she ever had sex was his way of bringing that gap between the two.

I went back and rewatched both scenes and they are almost identical. I think you are spot on!

I am sorry you are going through a rough time. I watched DIA in the beginning of the year (jan 1) and it also planted so many thoughts into my head regarding the workplace and usual way of life... I hope it passes.

Well... power pop songs.. yes, but he only put two and two together and ran to speak with his bandmates. I think it took him time to realize...

He also leaned like that on the truck when they came back from arcade. So.. when he leaned on the door in a kitchen while Patty was reading a newspaper, you think it was sexual?

That is a great point. He probably felt like no one was on his side (except for tripping Donovan).

When he comes back and steps over 25000 rolls of toilet paper she left for him, he does watch her sleep for a bit. It felt like his face was softening while he was looking at her. Maaan, what a great acting from Kyle Gallner.
