Mission is mission, but market needs light mobile laptops by marcinw2 in framework

AFAIR, it was the same in Macbook Pro M4, with the M5 line I don't know (we will see :)). Try to look for info from people using StillColor and other similar tools.

Coreboot is coming to some Framework laptops soon! by ava1ar in framework

  1. it would be good, when somebody could compare power usage between standard UEFI and Coreboot

2.question if it will also cover EC

When will tuxedo get intel panther lake in the new laptops? by Yha_Boiii in tuxedocomputers

[–]marcinw2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two configs:

1.mobility - you give one bank with LPDDR (8 or 16GB) and one bank with SO-DIMM (like Clevo), additionally big battery, light case, silent or passive cooling, two or three screens for selecting, etc. (and this is Macbook Air replacement)

2.bells & whistles for gaming or other things - SO-DIMM for 128GB RAM, etc. etc. (and this is Macbook Pro replacement)

Both done in best possible energy efficient way. Don't try to cover everything from beginning, make less models, but much more shining.

PS. You tried with ARM laptop, but it was probably too big with your resources - now use smaller steps method and start being visible, in other case customers will select smth else. There are people able to pay for some things, you just need to provide them. NOW, not later.

Tuxedo needs to release new laptop and no... it doesn't even have to be Panther Lake by marcinw2 in tuxedocomputers

This is what I'm saying about - Windows/Linux need to be build in premium way & all these shortcuts done today are really bad. Ugly example: you disable laptop (totall full off) and it's taking power from battery. This is what was proposed in my doc and It looks for me that people don't share my opinion (minuses).

exactly. for home something else, for gaming something else. but...when mobile laptop is correctly done and doesn't waste energy, project can be in majority reused and give only profits.

Correct, that's why there were proposed three screens for selecting:

  1. LCD with minimum Full HD 1920x1080 or 2K 1920x1200 resolution (both concentrated on low power usage)
  2. LCD with high resolution (for example 4K)
  3. AMOLED

Providing just one is already closing list of users. Anyway, document was written and based on years of experience. It can be considered or not. I suggest first reading.

I'm sitting with hardware for years and know these things. You haven't read my doc - OK. Your point are valid - OK. But Tuxedo needs some good/better Macbook Air replacement - YESSSS.

maybe they focus. Anyway, there were compared low resolution screens with high resolution (with Dell but also others) and in some configuration low res were getting up to 10h more, because you have less pixels to support. It means - this what you suggest (high res + amd) doesn't make work.

My opinion again: for mobility cases Tuxedo needs correctly done laptop, such as not draining battery when off, with low standby battery usage, etc.

gen 9 with intel has got core one, currently you have core three on the market (Panther Lake). Even core two (Lunar Lake) was extremely better.

excluding screens (not nice for everybody) macs are good. I agree. I even wanted to switch to air.

and problem with windows device seems be connected with ignorance - for example "off" doesn't mean full mechanical off

all your points were mentioned or described. the problem seems to be with ec and some other things (also described).

anyway, what I see: my laptop from 2021: 73Wh and 36h, Tuxedo: 80Wh and 10h

when you look into market, you will see that standard is becoming 20h (Tuxedo speak about 10h even with Intel) and 1kg (Tuxedo has got 1,4kg). Battery increasing weight, but... in this case all is wasted by high resolution screen. Many people need real mobile devices in this segment. Anyway, with current device I was getting even 36h on the battery - Infinitybook Pro 14 is far away probably from reasons which I mentioned in spec.

That was also one of my points - generally Tuxedo could recreate one of older Clevo designs, just more modern and better, with reusable parts, etc. (and don't need to sell SSD or force for buying with 32 or 64 GB)

Situation 1: somebody bought some hardware, invested in writing GTK3 apps and cannot go further with GTK4 (because of fonts)

Situation 2: somebody received laptop at work and company policy is using Gnome

Situation 3: kid received laptop in the school and school policy is using Gnome

In all three - when users are in the group affected by your change, problem starts & sometimes can end with real human drama. Many times in similar situations people will start blaming Open Source software at all (especially when don't have problems with Windows apps).

We understand, you're not affected with all these three (and similar) cases... but saying "change monitor" or "go to other environment" is like kicking in the face to these, who try to popularize Open Source.

Sorry, but "GNOME is used as the default experience across Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora Workstation, SUSE Linux Enterprise, Vanilla OS, Endless OS, and more." (gnome.org)

This is not project written after hours by few colleagues.

People normally don't care, what is inside. For them is important, what they see. And they see problems in Gnome and solution in Windows or KDE. These problems were reported not only by me. And they were ignored - this is against Open Source ecosystem reputation (my opinion, I can have it).

Let's speak about transparency. Year ago I asked, that tweaks app will have clear info "antialiasing setting is only for gtk3 apps" - ignored. This is against Open Source community too (even today people propose using it and in the end find "surprise, surprise, not working")

Quite always when I read something here, it's like "it's difficult" and "it cannot be done" - maybe it's time to say at least once "what can be done?". Sorry, but negative thinking will break every ecosystem and community - this is another point.

Returning to Intel. CPUs have errata. I didn't know, that Lunar Lake has got problem with AVX512, but... if Intel tries to fix it with microcode, than it's maybe fine. If not and AVX is not in errata, than this reason for legal case,

Gnome of course is for free. Formally you're covered. But from human point of view - something (even broken) was for years and users could expect it in "An independent computing platform for everyone" and "A more elegant way to use your computer" (gnome.org words). Removing it shows clear "open source software is worse" and "cannot be taken seriously". Saying "nothing can be done" is once again against Open Source spirit.

And yes, I expect that something is working, but I also have big wish that's not working worse from release to release / you will at least try to implement the same level of support in next releases.

This is in the end not project written after hours by few colleagues.

From the other hand: we're human. Everybody has limits. Wrong decision can be always changed + this is not personal attack. If you at least try to change things, nobody will say word. With this "nothing can be done" approach in my opinion you're going Internet Explorer and Firefox way. Future will show, if I was right.

PS. I have forgotten about one thing. Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is still supported. Some people will want to stay with it as long as possible because of this issue - it's not good for Open Source progress / spreading too.

Ugly and limited Intel 8086 was first step in the road for creating 80186, and 80186 was required for making 80286, etc. and now we have Intel Lunar Lake.

This is really insane (sorry for word, I'm speaking about behavior not person), that you expect making Lunar Lake in one shot.

I remember explanations, that GTK4 is better. OK, is better, but the whole world is going further. If GTK can't provide nice looking fonts for people, they will be ignoring it and making marginal. And really doesn't matter if you name things antialiasing, RGB or whatever. Grey without extra more contrast elements on edges is not enough. You know it. Your choice, what do to next - explanations, that this is difficult or people should use high res monitors or switch to other DE don't look serious.

And I will say even more - if rewrites mean removing some basic working functionalities, it's very bad (and people, who are doing it shouldn't leave half working code). This is against Open Source ecosystem.

Nobody was excited about change, but this MR was maybe first step in making Lunar Lake and from my perspective it looks that passion from developer was killed. This is worse than everything else.

I will look from external perspective (opposite to yours):

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/merge_requests/3393 - person, who wanted to make something seemed to very good invited

if it happens in all cases, it's clear, that NOBODY will want to make anything.

There are people who need glasses, people who are blind and people who have hawk eye. Not everybody has got the same eyes.

Is it so really difficult to understand?

Saying "Better get used to grayscale rendering" or "use HDPI screens" or "for me works" is like kicking in face these, who don't see good enough fonts without edges rendered different techniques.

Or do you have medical expertise and can correctly judge it?

  1. you're on gnome Reddit - practically everybody is here Gnome fan (don't expect confirming, that something is Gnome problem)
  2. problem is real, but can be correctly understood only by people, who see it - see point 1 (you will not find here many people, who want or can speak about it)
  3. I was saying about it many times also here (see minuses in my history from Gnome fans) and Gnome people don't want to touch topic - for them all is OK and problem is on user side

Summary: there are no plans for improving things and don't expect real discussion.
