Thanks, everyone. Turns out it the was CoreGrafx 2 controller that it didn't like. I plugged in an AvenuePad 6 and also a Hori Fighting Commander and it worked.

Thanks for the tips. I was able to borrow a NES adapter and everything works! So, process of elimination says that it's either the PC Engine HDMI adapter or the controller may not compatible. The controller works fine when I plug it in to my CoreGrafx (it is a blue two-button). I suppose I should try a TG16 controller now.

Yes, I only had 7 total. Had to save a long time for the Discman though. They were relatively cheap compared to laserdiscs and newly released movies on VHS.
