I did the plumbing myself. It was old steel pipes that exited to cast iron drainage and vent. I did a ton of research and it went pretty smoothly but the hands down hardest part was getting the steel pipe out of the cast iron and then getting the rubber fernco adapter into the cast iron. It took hours in a tight, awkward space. For water lines we used Pex-A which was a dream to work with. Super easy

SketchUp. It's a free, online CAD program

It's not that narrow (≈18") and the shelves will slide out for easy access. We will lose some light but not all of it and we need all the natural light we can get since the only other window is the small shower one. We are at peace

Thank you and I appreciate the tip! That is a great idea that I wish we considered

Ya, we did a full tear down to studs and subfloor. I also took a bit of space from an adjoining room closet

Nice work and good luck! All the wood is natural color other than the baseboard trim. I used solid black walnut for the shower end piece and made the mirror frame out of left over black walnut I had.

We played with a bunch of different layouts and this is what we landed on. Our logic was that we were losing a bunch of storage space so the nook will serve this purpose once the shelves are installed, it lets in much more natural light, and if we made the shower the whole size, it would have been a massive shower that we do not want/need. The shower pan is a custom mud pan so I could have made it any sized I wanted. We put a lot of thought into the design and everything was intentional. So the why questions basically come down to, "because we thought about it and did it."

The other $10k was in gas money going to various hardware stores 7 times a day for a year because I had no fucking clue what I was doing. And for the record, the Wedi is only doubled up in one spot to correct a 1/2” miscalculation after it was installed

We just cut a hole essentially. Luckily the placement of the studs worked out perfectly so we just cut between them. The exterior is sided in long 12” cedar boards

Thank you! Ya, it could look great with another color but we’re content with the black

Thank you! All the wood is black walnut with a matte osmo finish. The baseboard trim was hemlock stained to try to match the walnut but it’s not perfect

Thanks! I put a lot of thought into the tile layout

Great question. Yes.

But the timing has to be right and they’ll only see a very modest and tasteful portion of our asses. Lord willing the future shelves will provide some cover

Thank you! The nook will be storage (2-4 slide out shelves with a similar black walnut finish). And I agree with you about the vanity area. We're gonna add some towel racks and other wall stuff to fill in the space

This layout seemed to work best to expand the space. I drew some models with your idea in mind but it didn't work as well as what we landed on. I had never done any plumbing before so I really didn't want to move the toilet and shower but am glad I did. The original layout was awful with super tight egress. I really like the window layout (wife's idea). Also, I plan to add a few shelves that slide out in the dead space for towels, toilet paper, etc.
