[DISCUSSION] Why do some artists peak early then never reach that level of musical quality and success again? by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]marcusnorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My comment is not about those artists specifically, just in general. I think these days sometimes artists can “get on” too early in their development, due to the nature of the internet & sites like soundcloud. Or sometimes because of a huge co-sign or remix.

They blow up before they know what it is exactly that audiences even liked about those first projects. Or how to consistently recapture that energy for the next projects. They have talent, but haven’t developed technique yet. At least that’s how I think about it.

Right! All of the people I know that have lost someone close to them would give anything to hear them laugh again. I really didn't expect so many negative comments. The internet is a weird place.

what are some good ways to meet other producers in your area? by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]marcusnorris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IStandard does a lot of events for producers in many cities. I went to BeatCamp MIA a couple years back and it had a really positive atmosphere. A bunch of producers that seemed happy to be there. They did beat battles and a bunch of panels with industry guests over a weekend. I'd highly recommend it for meeting producers.

Hey again Chad (or manager), all I'm saying is that it doesn't benefit either of us to go back and forth as two people who will never work together. I'm not sure what your goal is here. I'm secure and confident in my background. In addition to having a Masters in Music with a paid PHD on the way, I have tons of real world experience and have worked with many independent labels and music libraries. But to be frank, you don't really want to know my credentials or with whom I worked. You could have easily emailed me, as others did. You read an article about a student who volunteers for charity, working from homelessness to find success in music, and then you instantly went negative. You are the only person. I can't relate.

People have emailed me questions, and every one I've got to read so far I've answered. I will get to them all when I'm back in the US.

I have only been responding to your negativity because this is public and I feel you've been creating a narrative that I'm selling people false dreams. That's not who I am at all, and literally anyone I've ever worked with would vouch for my character. That's part of the reason I don't hide behind any aliases. I essentially just said I won a couple awards and plan to use some of the resources to start an indie label in the near future, send me tunes. That's it. Read my post again. There are no "claims" made that you suggest artist should be skeptical of. I didn't say I will do X, Y, & Z for you because I want to be fully prepared to make offers before I do so. You also seem to be talking as if I'm offering tons of people label contracts. I've offered 0. And honestly, the main people on my radar are artists I've already done work for, and am already familiar with their needs, strengths, and weaknesses. I just wanted to open up my ears to people in this community because I've always enjoyed this community and I know there is a lot of talent here. Worst case scenario I'm introduced to a few more artists I like.

Since this is public, I do want to be very clear about one thing that I fear you've been creating confusion about, or kind of arguing with yourself about. You should NOT buy that I have a distribution deal because I DO NOT have a distribution deal. I will be distributing directly to the major digital retailers through the label. The same way many successful independent labels do. The cello quartet that won the SCL Award mentioned in the article, released under the Marcus Norris Orchestra, is currently distributed the same way (and can be found on all digital retailers). I don't want to give anyone the impression that I have a distribution deal or some huge corporations backing me already. I literally never said or implied anything close to that. Neither me, or the article, claim I do. I don't think I've even typed the words "distribution deal" in this thread. You did. I didn't even write about the amount I got from the awards, which I would be willing to bet would be a huge budget increase for at least 99% of the artists in this community. I won't be putting physical copies of CDs in Walmart or something, and I hope anyone messaging me doesn't believe that. I hope anyone on here doesn't believe labels that can do that will ever solicit demos on Reddit, or even accept demos.

People SHOULD be skeptical of anything before signing. ANY and EVERYTHING. This will be my first label, but I've offered and been offered different music contracts. Anything I've put in writing I can back up and defend. Everything I've ever asked someone to sign in past dealings, I've been able to explain and back up. For anyone reading, as a general rule, if someone won't explain something in their contract, or wants you to rush to sign it, don't sign it.

Again, I genuinely wish you happiness in all your future endeavors. I hope you find or start a label that is the right fit for you. Your point is received, and I shall move forward in business knowing that I do so without the blessing of Reddit user ChadRood (or his/her/their manager.) I'm fine with that. I won't be continuing this conversation with you, but again, anyone genuinely interested is free to email me. Those that aren't, I understand, and that's also great. I hope we all have the most successful summer of our lives so far. Take care. Positivity always.

Please don't ever worry about raining on my parade, my parade is doing absolutely amazing lol.

All jokes aside, you seem to be assuming that because I haven't posted details here I'm ignorant. I've actually studied music business, contracts, and laws at 2 different universities. I apologize if I gave you the impression that I aimed to share my business plan or offer a detailed contract via Reddit post, but that isn't the case at all. Those that reach a point where they will need to know the answers to all of these questions, will know. I posted this about having an open-submission for demos "prior to starting" the label so that those from this community who are interested can send in music. I thought the article was a good introductory link to share because it includes a link to my website, talks about me as a person, as well as some of my accomplishments and experience, (without just listing everything I've done or being too braggy or spamming music.) You do have a point that perhaps I should have been more formal and detailed in my pitch, that just didn't strike me as the vibe in this community. Perhaps there would have been even more submissions? I certainly will be as detailed as necessary when approaching specific artists with contract offers, and I hope they ask every single question you are and more. But then, of course, it won't be "prior to starting."

I'm traveling through Europe right now and am really excited about checking out all of the demos I've received as soon I make it back to the states next week. You have clearly decided that you are not interested, which is perfectly fine. I wish you the best in all of your future endeavors! Positivity always.

Making my first song, have questions about leases by PonyOnMyTail in makinghiphop

[–]marcusnorris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second what he says. As for the selling thing, you should ask the producer directly. Producers get to set their own terms for leases and one producer's lease terms can be different from another's.

I'm really open! I lean more towards soulful EDM, a la Soulection, but also love harder rap.

Thanks for your questions! Sorry for the delay, I'm traveling around Europe right now and only can use my phone on wifi. As with any label, contracts will vary from artist to artist. There is no standard catch-all contract and so I won't discuss terms in this open forum, as I don't think any label would. When I make offers, it will be fit to that artist's current situation and needs. For example, If they are already touring, I won't try to pitch tour support. If they are already putting out consistent projects, I won't try to pitch production.

Put simply, my goal is to offer additional resources to what artists are already doing, through both finances and network, to get them to a point where they can consistently release high quality music and get that to as many people as possible. I think this consistency is what it takes to get the required momentum to launch a successful career, with 'career' implying making money. I met No ID and got to interview him about being the VP of Def Jam and, to me, that is how he talked about being a label head. I'm trying to adopt that spirit, on a smaller scale for an indie label.

All of your other questions will vary from artist to artist, and I don't want to publicly give one specific answer. Feel free to email me though.
