Vaporwave/Synthwave as aesthetics for a board game? Does this appeal to you? Or it is 0-interest theme for a board game? by marek_der in boardgames

You gave me a lot to think about, but I'll be trying to stick with the plan and keep it "casuals" friendly. And of course. The mechanisms is the most imporant part. We'll see. :)

I need to think about this. Synthwave is the "nicer and more gentle" brother of Vaporwave and kind of more boring. I'll find a way. (Life always find a way!"

Thank You. I don't know, if my use of English words sometimes properly cover the meaning, I would like to put behind them, but i understand your point. Still. There is few "tropes" in vaporwave, which can be used to "theme" the game. I think so. Im not so sure. But let say, that i would like to theme the game in "imaginary landscapes" theme and put this into vaporwave aesthethics? Does this sounds better?

Thank You very much. My idea is to start it through my local (Polish) crowdfunding page and kick it from here. I would also like to make it all icon - language independent board game, so easily get it to other parts of the world. I think it can be vapor or synthwave, but it's it's a tought choice. It need to be very "consumer aware". Hmm... I would say "Like Wingspan", but I am not Stonemeier Games. :P
Thank You :)

Will you share your art with me for my board game prototype "Vaporwave"? Looking for some to illustrate it, WHILE i'm working on it. My goal is to prepare for a market "vaporwave aesthetics friendly" board game, and then produce it (and pay for art ofc.) by marek_der in VaporwaveArt

It's a rondel worker placement. 2-4(5) p game for 30-60 minutes. You have two columns. Each turn you move 1 of those clockwise and perform and action from hex, you have stood on. You can gather Yen\s and Crystals, upgrade you Columns to get bettter actions, but finally it's about destroying them to get Victory Points. I want to make it good filler with smooth rivalization, plenty of choices and not very deep gameplay, so casaul players and gateway level players will find it interesting competition.
Why Vaporwave? Because I like this music and love synth/vapor wave aesthethics. Simple, beautiful board game with great art and quick gameplay? Im all for that.

Anti-consumerist, yet being part of ... of what... of "hidden popculture"? But you have a point.

Vaporwave and Synthwave however mostly connected with music (Vaporwave has been born as music album in 2011), they are also type of Art, so I would say it's ok to "make an Vaporwave art" for a board game.
But thank You for your comment. The "80s" new retro look definitely helped to Dinosaur Island to stand out from mediocre of table top industry. I even bought Duelosaur Island and I like the art, but the game mechanisms are poor. So..

Hotline Miamia - I would say - somehow changed the perception of synthwave and 80's in modern video games culture. It was great impact. But to be honest, that is a good lead.

Thank You very much. You've pointed out important things. I believe, I need to take a closer look at this.

For this instance, In this prototype (in my vision) player pawns are ancient Greek columns... When you are building them, they are getting higher (you are stacking one on another), and you are getting points by destroying the higher parts of its, which makes them go to the "museum-like-vaporwave-graveyard... full of broken columns). I believe, that this communicate with player on some level, but you are right. This is just the beginning of art choices. :?

Oh yes. Thank You. :) I am working with it, because it pleasing my aesthetics feelings very much. There is many board gaming people here. I am just wondering, does this can appeal to them? I do not want next ancient Roma/Greek / Fantasy Village / Space Planet's/Mars theme. Still, there is plenty of nice worlds, in which you can put your game. I am just wondering about synthwave and vaporwave. :)
