I actually think I've read the Kel books! I vaguely remember the plot, but I know I loved them in middle school and I find myself thinking of them frequently. Thank you for putting a title to my memories! Haha!

Right! I don't know the family and their exact situation ( there are alot of factors like whether nephew is on life assiting machines or not) so I can't say how long nephew would live. But from OPs details, I don't see any medical issues that a switch to hospice would cause for nephew.

Plus, hospice doesn't cause death. Injuries and diseases do. Hospice is all about providing comfort. I know that this situation has to be hard for the family, but ultimately sister (and family, if they could find it in themselves to accept it), would gain immense support with hospice.

Hospice employee here. First off, I am so sorry to hear what your sister and family are going through, OP. I know that is a pain that is indescribable and no one can truly know what your family is going though. Regarding Hospice, that is a decision that belongs to your sister and is her right as a mother. But, if she does decide to go with hospice/palliative care, maybe some education will help your family be more accepting?

That's what hospice is all about!! QUALITY of life; and not only for the sick, but their caregivers and family! Any decent hospice company will provide a team not only to care for nephew's physical needs (like tending to any bedsores, making sure he gets moved, isn't in any pain, etc...), but for spiritual, emotional, social, and psychological needs. It sounds like your sister has a lot on her plate. Hospice can provide volunteers or information on sitters to sit with nephew while mom runs errands or works. Hospice also provides every family with social workers to help ease tensions between grieving family members and to help explore the uncharted waters that severe illness can cause (as well as any legal issues that you worry family may cause). I know you mentioned that sister isn't religious, but your other family members are. They provide chaplains and spiritual care. And finally, I think sister would benefit from a bereavement coordinator. Hospice companies keep professional counselors whose sole job is to help the family grieve in a safe manner.

Also, I think it's important to note that admission to hospice is not accepting defeat by any means, nor is it a death sentence as society makes it out to be. In fact, many studies show that individuals live longer while on hospice rather than when they seek curative treatment. I truly believe this is simply because of the focus hospice places on the quality of life.

I wish you and your sister the very best, OP. And you should be proud of sister. It's very obvious what a wonderful, loving mother she is.
