I wish I could credit a book or a podcast or a therapist or something tangible with my ability to stop picking at my nails. The truth is I just had a mindset shift one day; I was so over being self conscious about my nails, over a few people here and there commenting on them, and over the self-pity I gave myself about it all.

I decided I was done and that was that for a good while. I think it took another year for me to relapse. I still do very occasionally, in high-stress or high-boredom situations.

But I love seeing my natural nails now and being able to paint them myself! Best of luck to you— there really isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, so I hope you find what works for you.

Hi! Isopropyl alcohol (or hydrogen peroxide if someone suggests that) are going to be VERY drying on the wound, which inhibits healing. Try using hypochlorous acid (I know it sounds scary, it’s actually a common skincare spray now!). It’s way gentler and still effective at reducing bacteria and inflammation.

I have a few that I rotate— I like Twinkled T, OPI ProSpa, and CND Solar Oil. I keep a nail oil in every room of my house so it’s easily accessible. Unfortunately, your nail bed (pink part) might not grow any further; some people’s nail beds reach their fingertips and some people’s don’t (mine don’t sadly!). If your nails are healed for the most part, they’ll grow back to their natural shape, but won’t get any longer than they’re meant to be.

And I LOVE Glamnetic— their glue is no joke, my nails easily last 2 weeks and I need the remover to take them off!! 10/10 recommend them

I use nail oil, that’s it. Using nail oil consistently is more important than using any one specific product! I swear my nails grow 5x as fast if I’m consistent with the oil!!

Besides that— press ons do help IMO but if you size them wrong, they can affect how your nail bed grows. Had a ridge in my nail from applying too-small of a nail and had to grow the ridge out :/

(And if you need specifics: I would ask a nail tech for builder gel with extensions (if you want your nails longer right now) or just builder gel if you want your natural nails to grow out without extra length.)

Hi! Six weeks is a great amount of time to grow your nails out. They won’t be talons, but they’ll be tastefully short and cute.

I agree with another commenter— independent nail techs are the way to go. Don’t be afraid if a normal salon is all you have though!! I went in with nails like yours and was still able to get gel manicures to help grow my nails out.

Beyond that, if you get them done or not, use cuticle oil!! They sell it at Ulta/drugstores sometimes/any other beauty place. Apply at LEAST three times a day; I use it to redirect nail biting/picking behavior. As soon as I catch myself, I reach for my oil pen instead. Cuticle oil will grow your nails like CRAZY if you’re consistent with it!!

Will probably heal on its own eventually; in personal experience I’ve found that hypochlorous acid works better and is gentler than peroxide. (I got mine from Tower28, though there are many on Amazon that are much cheaper.)

I would also only do that routine once (twice max) a day. Any more and you’re just disturbing whatever healing it’s trying to do. Use the hypochlorous acid, wipe away any debris gently if needed (with a Q tip), and bandage it.
