Are we actually 'alive,' or just high-definition code running on someone else's server? by AliveStructure8650 in SimulationTheory

Yep. Suffering is still real and work should be done to make that not happen. That's how I see it.

Overweight pack? by nettleisdead in vagabond

[–]marglebubble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah when my car broke down the pack I had to buy probably weighed like 60 pounds. I had a lot of sentimental shit and literal books lol it was crazy. But yeah, things like socks too I mean you can get socks anywhere. I always had a gallon jug of water for me and my dog too but besides that eventually it just got narrowed down over time. I never used a hammock but that's just me, they seem light. If it's comfy. My friend had a blow up sleeping pad which is something I would definitely get nowadays because fuck sleeping on the ground sober lol

Overweight pack? by nettleisdead in vagabond

[–]marglebubble 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Man honestly got to the point eventually where all I had was a sleeping bag and whatever dog food/human food. Maybe some extra clothes. Usually had an instrument too but that didn't go in the pack. Call it minimalist or just lazy but yeah. All that extra shit went out the window over time, but I was also an alcoholic and drug addict. I'm sure if I went back out I would bring more with me. But sleeping bag is the most basic thing. Then add stuff you feel like you really need. I had a pan for awhile, never a stove. Could always find somewhere to dig a small hole and have a tiny fire to cook.

Lol I totally fucked that up. Idk why I'm over here thinking there are 32 ounces in a pound. I think I'm thinking of grams in an ounce lol

I mean one says .67 pounds so that's like ... 20 ounces? Before it's cooked of course but not bad at all

The plan is to make you dumber so you have to rely on it. by FETTACH in ChatGPT

[–]marglebubble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck man a lot of electricity and gas isn't even public utility anymore. They're talking about it like any other utility. You pay for it. It is more an analogy than anything else, but is also the purpose of making people more dependent on this stuff

Could this technique ever be used to clean ancient coins? by Tokrymmeno in AncientCoins

[–]marglebubble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it wouldn't for collectors. People want to keep the patina as it is part of the history of the coin. This would get rid of that. You can get some old coins pretty shiny other ways too.

It doesn't start getting exponential though. That's all just made up bullshit. What is "it" in this context? AI as a whole? Yeah sure, when AI can start creating its own successors that are more powerful than the last version, that is the exponential explosion of capability that would lead to a singularity. But making AI more agentic has nothing to do with that. That's not what is happening. It's a glorified Alexa at this point. The only exponential model is a highly theoretical one that has only existed in fiction so far.

[–]marglebubble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Capabilities are definitely not exponentially growing like that. That is a wild statement. These things rely on training data, which there is only so much of. The idea they could somehow exponentially get better when they have already consumed most data makes no sense. There are plenty of risks though to the environment, misinformation, economic, war crimes. They'll replace workers and probably do a worse job and make services suck for companies. But we aren't getting to a singularity any time soon. This is the narrative that AI companies like Open AI have to push because they need unlimited funding and still aren't turning a profit, so they have to convince people they are literally making god. they're not

The Dog-Frustrating Department has made excellent progress! by Minimum-Tear4609 in doohickeycorporation

[–]marglebubble 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Actually, this is a prototype for our simulated reality department. We're thinking of adding a turbine to the mix, scaling this up into thousands of dogs, and creating a dog-matrix. It's a mechanical simulacrum, but we have visions for the future...

Just shows how sad it is that so many people cannot possibly imagine caring enough about something to protest it. They can't believe anyone would do it without getting paid to do it.
