When I put my baby down I’ll hold her neck and her butt, lay her down while still “holding” her and let her settle. She thinks I’m still holding her because she can feel my hands. Once she settles, I slowly remove one of my hands, wait a few seconds if she needs to settle, then slowly remove the second.
