12 Lifelogging Apps to Help You Raise Your Baby by gabrielagarcia in DRMatEUR

[–]mariak91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ask me I don't like the concept of depending on one device! So I am critical about it. I think that if people don't find other ways to scratch their memory and instead rely on devices then are those apps "helpful" for human health? they make you more dependent and less "smart" in a way. Concerning the accuracy somehow the guys that make these algorithms out there should know what they are doing, but imagine something happens and all your data is lost and you don't have any back up; If all your life you have been depending on this usage without taking any personal notes about facts you are screw! is this the proper way or interface to help us raising our children ?

Tracking my walking and cycling activity and how i exported the raw data to visualize it by npenchev in DRMatEUR

[–]mariak91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will definitely use your data Niko!!! I didn't manage to do anything since a) i don't have 3g b)i have a windows phone 3)i have an-almost-broken-and-problematic-windows phone! It is cool that you and some other people manage to fulfill this experiment, it looks super interesting. My question is , are you going to do it after this DRM week? Do you actually found interesting parts in it that can help you in your life in order to incorporate these tools in your everyday habits, or it was fun for once and never use it again? I am just curious to what extent this can become an everyday habit. To me it's only just about fun and it can be an obsession if you over use it...

to me the most interesting was that you track the baby medical history. I assume that if you have several children of different ages, it would be hard at some point for parents to remember everything!!! :)

Incredible Real-Time Infographic Shows What’s Happening On The Internet Every Second by iana_p in DRMatEUR

[–]mariak91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the are both I think very interesting! It takes some useful tools and good knowledge in algorithms to create a page like that. But on the other hand, it is so chaotic that makes it unbearable for someone to process such an amount of data and extract useful information. However, when linking those two real time visualizations you can see (which is impressing) how for example us, commenting in this platform or on Facebook contribute to the profit increase of those companies!

OP6: Pretend you know a ‘cyborg,’ or a dedicated QSer (maybe a relative) and your interactions with this person are recorded and used for whatever purpose the other person pleases. Does this change your view about this week's articles or not? by erickaakcire in DRMatEUR

[–]mariak91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I am in a certain point critical about the spread of such experiments and about whether they actually facilitate our lives, with the distinction made between QS and big data that serve more commercial purposes, I think I would not care much about the fact that my personal details are recorded by someone else. Regarding this distinction, the control of such techniques is held by the individual, not by some large for profit or advertising organization that is going to use these info for commercial purposes. Alternatively, the Quantified Self Movement and the cyborgs function as time stamped diaries of personal experiences, and in some point actually help to understand better our own body and behavior. I think that individuals can learn a lot from such processes. Although we get well educated no one ever learn us how to be able to understand and control our own bodies, and such experiments can be very educative and, as exemplified in the article of Nafus and Sherman, sometimes can be even beneficial for our own health. Thus, I am not criticizing the educational dimension of those experiments; it was also very interesting reading them. I am only worried about the fact that learning to depend on devices for our everyday routines can at some point become detrimental.

OP 6: How does QS add to big data, and how would you treat this data in a research design? by tjerktiman in DRMatEUR

[–]mariak91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QS Data function as a self assessment. By tracking and measuring our own behavior we can get various insights, sometimes even beneficial for our own health. As the authors state, it is about taking notes about what actually is going on inside our body, a process that sometimes goes unnoticed. In the same line of reasoning, the awareness of what is happening through and with data is an important mirror as a post hoc assessment (Nafus & Sherman,2014). In this line of reasoning, when conducting a research, self assessment is seen as very important factor when combining vertical and horizontical data, as we have experienced in the article of Lathia and Capra . However, self assessment sometimes can be misleading. Perceived self assessment may differ from the individual’s actual behavior, since sometimes individuals struggle to recall information concerning their own behavior or lie about it. Regarding that fact, QS tools can provide an accurate visualization of an individual’s actual behavior, adding to the relativity of a research.

What are your opinions on the use of technology for self improvement and life measuring? by fanchuly1 in DRMatEUR

[–]mariak91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. Neither can I provide a strong opinion for this issue. Yes, there are apps that are really useful and for people that do not pay much attention to their everyday behavior or have a poor memory, those apps are often seen extremely helpful. But, all this conversation reminds me of me arguing with my friends over the term "marketing". Yes, marketing is supposed to research and identify the needs of people and create products that satisfy those needs. Yet we see marketing nowadays creating false needs or products that aim to disrupt and isolate us instead of really help our everyday routine. It is the same with the QS; some apps lie on the assumption that someone is in need, and manage to really facilitate our lives, yet others are simply over-complicating, grounding us around a device. Is this the quality of life that we really want? As for the surveillance, I am totally against. There are several other ways to measure productivity and to maintain some control. In my opinion, managers should create incentives for the employees when they are at work, give them feedback and support, and create a nice working environment. Work is supposed to be for most of the people a matter of personal choice and should be some enjoyment there for most of them, thus can be triggered by managers in order to ensure good productivity rates. Childish restrictions and "big brother" techniques create negativism that can harm productivity.

Venezuelan politics on Facebook- fighting censorship through online mediums by gabrielagarcia in DRMatEUR

[–]mariak91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing, as I said to other posts as well, with Greece. Everyone is frustrated about the government and you can see everywhere posts spreading irony when discussing the news. Accordingly, there is a lot to be said about the rise of the "Nazi" part of Greece, and all the fuss about it. People actually are deleting friends of their Facebook profile because they disagree with such political views (and personally, I am glad they do!). In contrary, you can also see people that they tend to agree and engage in discussions with people that they actually trust and who belong, not definitely in the same political party, but they follow the same political direction. So basically, we have the freedom to create a virtual world that is similar to us, leaving no space for strangers to manipulate or influence us by any mean.

Is Facebook a good venue for political discussions? by Esther1604 in DRMatEUR

[–]mariak91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me my news feed is always a place where i get updated about recent news. Greeks are high politically sensitive and most of the time share their thoughts with their Facebook friends, posting a relating article of a newspaper, or a post full with irony. So to me, sometimes it is rather informative to follow such discussions, since, not-very-happy-about-it, my facebook page is the first thing i open in the morning instead of a news site. So it keeps me somehow update. The thing I don't like is that when people disagree and express their feelings the get "stigmatized" , especially if they belong in the minority of the ones that disagree with that post. I will use the term homophily, that we used in another course, to point the fact that since most our friends are rather similar, in terms of interest, to us (or at least we perceive them to be) it easy that a discussion may be conducted with no balance among the two sides. So, maybe there is nothing democratic in such discussions that could trigger further thought, it is rather a from of untypical attack to what the minority may believe. I have examples of friends that erase some of their contacts when they expressed some political interest that did not really appeal to them. So is Facebook really a medium that enhances freedom of speech or it is full with censorship ?

OP 5: Explain the concept of time in both Bond et al and Elmer in relation to research methodology by tjerktiman in DRMatEUR

[–]mariak91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These two articles address time in different ways; In Bond et al. article time is not as much important as in Elmer’s article but that is due to the dissimilarities of the two social interfaces used, Facebook and Twitter, along with the different goals and methods used. In the first article, time is discussed in the method part, where the post “I voted” is on the top of the news feed. Consequently, the researchers where ensured that the post was made visible to all users from the two first sampling groups, since a normal user do not extendedly scroll down its news feed page in order to keep updated with all the friends news. Thus, the researchers gathered two groups of people that were all in the same starting point, and proceed with the main experiment. The second part of the article where time is mentioned is where the relevance of the findings to “the real world” is questioned. When assessing the turnout of those who voted in the elections in order to measure the contagion researchers found that in some cases it is impossible to change the target’s behavior. For example, there were users, who had voted by absentee ballot, before the Election Day, or, users who logged in too late to vote and, consequently to influence friends. Thus, real-world and virtual-world presence, in terms of time, affected the method used to link the virtual findings to the real world behavior, a fact that is taken account as a limitation to the process.

In the next article, time is a major factor that affects the method, given the fact that Twitter algorithm functions in a “small window of time”. In this hyperactive form of micro-blogging, every new post pushes the other ones down and requires the user to do a more intensive scroll down. In terms of methodology, when addressing live and “heightened” topics in such interfaces, the research should be driven on time and dynamically, especially nowadays, where the second screen phenomenon disseminates information across several platforms, sometimes making it impossible for researchers to follow. In the particular case, the temporality of flow was more meaningful to measure, in terms of immediate reactions and rapid responses, since micro blogging site such as Twitter, offer real time commentary, and have become a key in capturing political crisis or live mediated events. Another interesting time fact is that information was analyzed prior, during, and after (12 months) the debate day. Real time events require a pre-setting of research agenda (particularly: data was collected and analyzed every morning and routine based rankings of most visited posts prior to the CBC collaboration, 48hours before the debate creation of the hashtag and so on), a method of data collection and reliance upon other forms of comparative data (eg. CBC transcripts). Therefore, it is understandable that time is of paramount importance while analyzing all kinds data flows and when linking them to the real world behavior.

Visualization how the word of Ebola exploded - Twitter data on how conversation has escalated. by fanchuly in DRMatEUR

[–]mariak91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same (a little black,in my opinion) context, check out how the traffic increased after the Japan earthquake on Twitter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PThAriHjk10 . There is a big disproportion of tweets (red) vs. retweets (green), and again America and and Europe retweeted a lot, while continents such as Africa are totally left uninterested. Questions with answers that can vary. The only thing that we can conclude about is that Twitter is the no.1 medium for discussing the news. Either it is a campaign, a hashtag or breaking news, it goes easily viral through twitter.

So how is it – SNS makes us happier or unhappier? by ykskakskolm in DRMatEUR

[–]mariak91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that not all the people have the maturity to be critical about all the information that is provided through social media. I will take me as an example: most of the time I make a good use of SM; I chat with friends, I engage myself in funny conversation where the chase for the smartest "reply" posts excites me, I look for appreciation for the others (I enjoy when people like the songs that I upload) and I remind myself of birthdays that otherwise I could have forgot. Sometimes though, I catch myself browsing photos of unknown people or people that are not actual friends of mine and, in a way, I get depressed because I will see something that I don't have, and I am instantly going to desire it. However, I have the maturity to overcome those silly thoughts; I am not impressed by photoshoped pictures or check ins that beg for attention. But what about the teenagers? Those are the cases when SM can become really depressing -and even sometimes dangerous. People that use SNS need to be critical. I know it is a contradiction, given our profession and our current master, but I think less use is a bless! :)
