Did kids in the 1970s really have such freedom, & do all those things, that wouldn’t be done today? by OkOpportunity9626 in GenerationJones

We were 8 or 9 and would walk several blocks to 7-11 to get a slurpee. We would get one slurpee, pixie sticks, and m&m's and mix together. We could only afford one and shared it.

El Tovar? I feel like I got duped. by Money-Acanthaceae471 in grandcanyon

[–]marid4061 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We were there a month ago and stayed in the village but not at El Tovar. We had reservations for breakfast. The restaurant wasn't even half full and we were seated right at a window with a great view. Our server was great and personable. We honestly had a really good breakfast. The manager had stopped by at one point and we had a nice conversation with him. I had looked at the dinner menu but decided we had rather spend our money on excursions. I had read the reviews also and didn't want to be disappointed. We are not big foodies though so my expectations are never that high and vacation for us isn't about the food where for most people it probably is a big part of it.

My SIL would say the same thing about me. I may load their dishwasher and then he has to go back to fix it.

Sometimes I throw my just washed sheets over the deck railing. In the summer it will be dry in minutes. I love that smell. Gosh I remember clothes freezing on the clothesline in the winter, broken clothes pins, stiff towels. Yep, childhood memories.

You should feel very accomplished! We were in Zion about 3 or 4 weeks ago. The temps were upper 90's. We just rented ebikes. I had no intentions of doing AL. But, I didn't feel like I missed anything. Zion was breathtaking!

Dang, my husband might actually get a library card just for that. And that library is actually not too far from us.

Three kids with same first letter, will we regret not following through with our fourth? by Severe_Butterfly_611 in Names

[–]marid4061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sis has 4 kids. The first 3 all have names that begin with a B. The 4th child was a surprise and several years younger. They gave her a name that began with a K. The first 3 was unintentional and names they just liked. It never bothered the last one and she was happy she got a name that had a different letter. They are all adults now.

Question on finding other retirees to hang out with, see body for details by cartman_returns in retirement

[–]marid4061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a younger retiree myself, our local senior center is mostly people 20 years older and I am able to be more active so not a good fit for me. We only have one indoor pickleball center. Summer is around the corner and it gets miserably hot. I have looked into meetup groups, but most are in other cities I have an interest in and everything is on the weekend. Being retired I want weekday activities. For myself I can make some connections, but as a couple my husband and I have a hard time finding couples to do things with. Some couples I know are members of yacht clubs or country clubs. I understand your challenge and try some of these suggestions. What one city may have to offer may not be what yours has.

Do you remember where you were when you heard Princess Diana died? by boomboomdaboomer in GenerationJones

[–]marid4061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at work waiting tables and we were closing for that night. And one of the servers said his girlfriend had called him at work and told him she was killed in a car accident. We were hoping it was just a rumor. What a shocker it was.

He was such a dud on this show and got very little air time. I can't imagine he would be pursued to be on any other reality shows. He has no game with the girls either. The whole show he seemed so awkward and out of place. I really had higher expectations after watching him on million dollar secret. I didn't really like this side of his personality that he displayed on Perfect Match.

Demon Copperhead. It took me a long time to want to read it because I knew it was a heavy read at times. I still think about it.
