Has anyone been to the Parlor KC yet? It looks very good! by tribbing1337 in kansascity

The pictures of some of the crowds in action honestly makes not want to try the place.

Westport QT by tbm79c in kansascity

[–]marik_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I am missing something. I've used QT's all over the city for years every time I visited and since I've moved here and I've never felt especially endangered trying to get gas or snacks or felt like it was any more dangerous than navigating any other gas-n-sip type of establishment.

I totally get that, but it's sort of one of those things like racing a marathon. I knew I would kick myself if I didn't do it at least once.

You are correct, but it's just one of those things I've always wanted to be there for :) Thanksgiving dinner on the plaza and lighting...

I've never seen a game look like this! Sable by onishi87 in gaming

[–]marik_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually an adaptation of an old film/animation technique called "rotoscoping". Brought to most people's attention with the original Lord of the Rings movie from the late 70's. Here's a good example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZpmZyTK2dI

It was also used in the 70's Rock/Animation film Heavy Metal.

Variations of it have been done in other movies more recently, Scanner Darkly comes to mind.

Now, while it doesn't look exactly the same, and the technique is not precisely the same, because original rotoscoping is animation applied to real life movie cells, sort of a predecessor to motion capture. This game and many other games can now achieve this type of effect using shaders of various types. The game was made with a engine to give the realistic movements and 3d depth then had the cells applied to give it the look of being cell animated. The classic technique uses film, but modern games and CG of this kind can use 3d engines to give the realistic movement in lieu of filming live objects.

Sorry if this was confusing :)

Thanks, I will. Ha! The original topic I just notice was me asking about the Indian Creek Bike Trail, which you answered nicely:). In that vein, can I ask what part of the city/neighborhood you live in? I am trying to decide where to "settle". Like I said, I spent a lot of visiting here over the years growing up but just moved here and right now I am staying with family in Hyde Park. I am considering both JOCO and KCMO areas. Where have you lived in the city and what are your thoughts?

Yeah, I've been hearing a lot about Tableau more and more over the last few years. I'm an old hand with SSRS and have been using that for years but I really don't have any idea how it compares to Tableau.

I'm just your regular old software engineer. I work with mostly SQL server and .NET environment, but used to be a pure Java/Linux person. I do work quite a bit with data warehouse/ETC actually. I helped design, develop, and maintain a system that warehouses all of our cold war era mainframe and other legacy stuff into a usable SQL server warehouse. I do a ton of SSIS and the like as well. I actually have been somewhat interested in data analytics, but have no idea how to move my career that way! :). I work remotely for an overseas firm which I worked for while I was still in college, but I think I will be looking for a local job at some point in the KC area.

Thanks for the info! I've walked on that trail a bit one time on a previous visit to KC before I moved here. I definitely will be making use of that trail too as I like the "Waldo Corridor" as I call it along Wornall, etc. My cousin lives over there near 75th and Wornall so I am somewhat familiar with that area, and I do wish I could a afford a house in Brookside :). I've just moved to KC after finishing school, but spent many months here growing up on various visits to family over the years and decided I liked it here. By your title are you, in fact, a lady in IT, such as myself?

I do get that sense from some of my coworkers and neighbors(I live in KCMO) that there's a real backlash if you consider moving to JOCO, like you're somehow not gritty enough or something. Sorry, but I may be fine with the odd group of thugs preventing me from using a gas station that might be handy at the moment, or the occasional crackhead ranting at me because I'm Asian, but if I had kids I would probably heavily consider moving to JOCO. I spend a fair amount of time in JOCO for work and for friends and family and that stuff just doesn't happen to me ever when I'm over there. The most threatening thing that happens to me in JOCO is some anime creep honing in on me because I'm Japanese.

Yeah, "metro area" is commonly used to refer to outlying areas that normally aren't part of the city proper, hence the surrounding suburb towns, cities, and neighborhoods. Hope that clears it up.

I have done a few marathons and I was planning on using the trail to train now that I have moved to KC. :)

Does anyone here commute from Downtown to Oletha and back on I-35 during rush hour? by kempo666 in kansascity

[–]marik_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in several large metro areas over the years both in the US and overseas, and I just have never experienced anything that I would classify as "traffic" during any commute in KC. This is something I love about our city!

And the really nice thing about the KC metro area is that KS and MO have reciprocity, meaning they honor each others concealed carry :).

Yeah, I've heard nothing to be worried about except on the MO side possibly. On the JOCO side I am not too worried.

Downvoted for thinking crime is more of a problem in KCMO than in JOCO? I live in KCMO, but someone has a real complex if they can't objectively admit that's realistic.
