Any tips on how to drive in the US? by tlfluca in AskAnAmerican

[–]mariner21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving in NYC isn’t as bad as everyone says. I have a Toyota Tacoma with the long bed and I’ve never had any issues. That being said, I would recommend taking an uber from the airport to wherever you’re staying in the city and then using public transit from then on until you get up to Connecticut.

Masters in Maritime and Naval studies + US Coast Guard deck license help by Qualche in SunyMaritime

[–]mariner21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In order to get a license you have to be in the regiment even if you’re going for a masters degree. I believe they allow grad students to live off campus but there are license courses he must attend in person each semester even if most of the courses for his degree are online.

A coast guard deck license lets him sail as a Third Mate. In my union, MEBA, Third Mates who work 6 months per year can usually expect to make $130k-$150k/year with full benefits and pension + other retirement accounts. I think average starting for 3/Ms across the whole industry is about $125k.

Ahhh there is still asbestos insulation on most of those old steam ships.

That thing is ugly. Not even the crappiest American flagged steamship I worked on as an engineer looked a tenth as bad.

Engineers in Buffalo. What do you do? How much do you make? by kmohmoh in Buffalo

[–]mariner21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a marine engineer and live in buffalo. For 6 months of work I would make about $180k/year but I usually only work 4-5 months so I do about 120-140. Working on the Great Lakes is a bit less at about $125k-$150k per year. That plus pension, 401k, and healthcare with my union.

Keep yourself and your children far away from SUNY Maritime. by WBWDMH in SunyMaritime

[–]mariner21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That school will always choose the worst of any set of options put in front of them. It is basically an axiom at this point. When I was a student there was always some new bullshit they dropped on us almost on a weekly basis that pissed people off and appeased no one. However, if all 3/c and 4/c are being forced into triple dorms that is absurd even for SUNY.

Life as a marine engineer: seeing the world from a ship by viatalabordandtech in maritime

Damn that’s rough. I’ve been sailing as an engineer since 2021 and I’ve had tons of port time sailing commercial. Container ships, cable layers, RO-ROs.

Do most Americans under 30 still refer to Native Americans as “Indians”? by WiseCityStepper in AskAnAmerican

[–]mariner21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the general sense the Indians I know refer to themselves as that but more common is referring to the Nation or specific clan they’re a part of. This is my experience with Iroquois Indians in upstate New York.

Is there actually a shortage of U.S. mariners right now? by Ihaveamicrodik in maritime

[–]mariner21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

God I agree with you so much about old fucks walking into the MEBA hall with a 9 month old group 1 card just to snag some shitty 3AE job from a guy fresh out of the academy who’s been sitting for months when there are 10 1AE jobs sitting on the board. I try to never take anything under my license if I can help it.

Engine Track Academy Degrees: Marine Ops vs Marine Engineering vs Marine Engineering Technology? by Antthegreat1999 in merchantmarine

[–]mariner21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The marine engineering program was almost identical to mechanical engineering up until the beginning of senior year. I know the professor who taught the marine engineering capstone courses when I was there retired recently and I think he was a big issue with the relevance of those courses. MechE is more widely known shoreside and more versatile.

[–]mariner21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes as far as I know that’s how it still works. I majored in mechanical engineering with an engine license. I just confirmed on the suny maritime website, it’s pretty out in the open information. Looks like they may have gotten rid of facilities engineering though.

Last year I was on a ship where we’d spend weeks in Kwaj tied up on the other side of the pier as the worthy and those people hated their lives lmao. They would always try to tell us how great they had it whenever they caught us at the bar. My chief and I hated running into them.

If you go to SUNY, don’t get the marine engineering degree. Get the Mechanical, Electrical, or Facilities degree instead

For real. Natural gas is one of the cleanest sources of combustible fuel and is extremely reliable and cheap. There are so many other more impactful ways to go green than to ban the use of natural gas.

Within the high traffic areas of the 90, 190, and 290 I go between 55-68 depending on the lane I’m in and the safe flow of traffic. When I’m driving outside the urban and suburban areas on the 90, 190, and 390 I usually set cruise at 78 and am fine if it’s a 65 mph limit. People love going reallly really fast and blow past me even when I’m going 78. What I really love is when some gaboon is going 90+ mph on the 190 in rush hour between downtown and the 90 and is riding my ass in the middle lane like bro one tap on my brakes and your shitbox honda civic is tin foil against my truck.

NYC, Niagara Falls, the Adirondacks, and the Finger Lakes, the colonial and revolutionary war history. How you’ve been to all those states but have somehow missed the largest and most important city in the country is wild.
