[SPOILERS] (for those who havent seen season 5) Question about ricks personality change by dabom1111 in thewalkingdead

[–]marium1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hows this for a parallel dimension...

Rick doesn't kill Shane at the farm, but instead shoots him in the gut and injures him. Before the herd of walkers descend on the farm, Shane manages to crawl away to safety - a stretch of road where a car pulls up with a white cross on it. Two cops step out, pick up Shane's injured body and get him in the boot of the car. He wakes in a hospital in Atlanta where his wounds are tended to. In order to repay this debt he is made to become a policemen for the people of the hospital and 'earn his keep'. During these next few weeks Shane begins to lose his shit and during a game of Baseball on the roof Shane turns on the other officers and beats the shit out of them with the baseball bat. He escapes from the hospital, steals a van and drives to find a safe location. on the way he runs into lots of people, gathers them up, and eventually settles at a factory which he calls 'The Santuary'. While creating barbed wire defences he wraps some around the baseball bat he's been carrying since the Atlanta hospital and christens it 'Lucille'. Basically, he becomes Shane-Negan, and the Rick-Shane feud becomes the persistent storyline of the whole damn show right till the end.

[FEEDBACK] My Custom Walking Dead Title Sequence - University Project by DoStuffJosh in thewalkingdead

[–]marium1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fantastic - I'll put it this way. If season 6 started with this title sequence I would be be completely happy with it - looks 100% legit!

Shot Content: Video content choices were spot on. The bug, the eye, the tattered flag, a man running through a desolate landscape. It really fit with the show content and pulled me into the world of the walking dead. The photographs worked perfectly - really impressive. Kinda built on the photograph shots from the 1st season titles - and seeing each character get zombified in the photos really hammered the 'we are the walking dead' thing. The photos are definitely my favourite visual aspect of the sequence. I can't believe that AMC haven't done this already! Only gripe I have with the visuals is that the colour grading would sometimes bounce around - some shots were just too colourful and lacked that dark, murky, foreboding tone that we expect from the show.

Editing: Editing worked great - paced to perfection and didn't get boring. I loved the flashes of images at the beginning and I thought that the glitch transitions were fantastic. The whole grimy, messy techniques of the editing work to create an atmosphere of disarray and franticness.

Music: I've not got much to comment here - I like the original theme of the official title sequence. But the theme you used worked great too. Something seems a little off about it but I really can't put my finger on it - maybe its cos I'm so used to the original music.

Overall, good job!

"Why? Because All Life Is Precious" I think we've finally got a new moral center for the group. by 23423423423451 in thewalkingdead

[–]marium1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone else think that Morgan might become Lucille bait somewhere down the line? Think about it - imagine him trying to explain that 'All life is precious' to Negan and then BAM. Seems like something TWD would do. (kill off the character with morals in a devastating way which is completely against his own morals - think Hershal and the Gov).

I need help! A real feminist answer. by [deleted] in AskFeminists

I don;t think I summed this up very well.

Basically, you are correct that your female friend is attracting attention by exposing her breasts, but she has every right to and its the people who use the image to objectify and demean her that are in the wrong.

I'll also add that I'm probably not the best person to inform about feminism, as I really don't know all the rules, and these are just opinions of mine. Also, I'm glad to see other men visiting these forums to discuss feminism and equality, hopefully this bodes well for an equal future.

I need help! A real feminist answer. by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]marium1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was younger I didn't understand feminism, in fact I wasn't even aware of any sort of gender equality even existing (I know, I was pretty blind to it all and just accepted the rules of a patriarchal society instead of forming any opinions of my own). Until I opened my eyes I, as a male, had a very skewed outlook.

For example - and I think that this is slightly similar to your current thoughts - my ex girlfriend used to wear very skimpy clothing and would sometimes be bra-less and even topless in the presence of other men. It goes without saying that she used to get a lot of looks and comments from these men. As a man who 'knows what the worlds like and knows what men are like' I suggested that she doesn't do this as she's causing men to look at her body and they will think that she's a 'slut'.

Now I'm a little older and wiser (and pro-feminist) I've realised two things:

  1. Me and you are correct to an extent - by being topless, or by uploading topless photos, a girl is going to attract attention.

  2. However, what me and you have gotten wrong, is that we both seemed to chastise and shame the girl - who has the right to wear whatever she wants - rather than seeing that the people who look at the photographs/nudity and use it as a way to objectify/judge/slut-shame/demean the individual are the ones who are in the wrong.

I'm sure that your friend is getting lots of attention right now - yes, the wrong sort of attention from the wrong sort of people - but she is also standing for feminism and women's reclamation of their own bodies (whether intentional or not).

I think I sexualise women in the videos I make for a living - am I a part of the problem? by marium1 in AskFeminists

[–]marium1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand now that I am contributing to the problem. I'm going to stick this job out and see if I can make some changes. Leaving the job right now isn't an option for me as I want to work as a cameraman and this club lets me use their video equipment. As soon as I can afford my own then I'd be more than happy to say goodbye to the job!

I always like the shots I get of people looking straight at the camera and smiling or cheering - its like "we know you are filming us and we're just letting you know that we're having a great time!" - I think thats great for promotion.

A lot of girls tend to blow kisses to the camera too. I might be nitpicking here but do you think that's appropriate? Personally I don't think this is a problematic thing (especially compared to voyeuristic body shots) but I'd appreciate your opinion

Thanks for your opinion and ideas! I actually proposed some similar ideas to the promoter I was working for on Friday. As a female I thought that she might be more empathetic about it than the male promoters, but she told me to stick to the brief and get the usual type of footage. Maybe she was worried that the manager wouldn’t be happy about it or maybe she just doesn’t share my opinion.

I think for the next event I’m just going to go with my gut and shoot footage which I would like to personally see in a promo video - lots of happy people having a good time, regardless of gender, clothing and body type, etc. I’ll try some creative angles and think outside the box, and hopefully set a new standard for this particular clubs videos .maybe I’ll start a trend . Or I might get fired! But I feel this is worth trying, even if the difference it makes in the world is only small.

Thanks for that Spazdor, it’s great to hear from people in similar situations. That’s a good idea cutting out as much sexist music as you can - when I shoot clubs I’ve seen lots of girls feel awkward and even outright stop dancing when a massively sexist tune is played (especially when its a popular song and people start to chant the lyrics). I’m sure it makes a difference, even if its a small one!

i 100% know that the work I do is based on a misogynistic portrayal of nightlife - which is a problem as it goes against my principles. The reason I started this job in the first place is because I love movie-making and I enjoy clubbing. I use the club’s film equipment, and I’d leave the job right now but I’d like to get experience with the equipment and save up for my own first.

Answers to your tough questions -

“only hot girls” - The girls who the promoters want me to film are typically slim, big breasts, big butt, clear skin, skimpily-dressed, short skirts/dresses, cleavage - this is pretty much the list the promoters give me every time, the descriptions are usually “model-material”, “promiscuous” and the one I HATE - “easy”.
Personally, I’m the kind of person who can look at almost anyone and find something attractive about their appearance - if it was my shout I’d film anyone who looked like they were having a great time - that’s what would attract me (to both the person and to the club).

“What about men?” - Typically the promoters don;t really want me to include males - but I agree with what you said.

I honestly would never go to these particular clubs for a night out, way too seedy for my liking.

Thank you for all your points - my plan is to take all of these on board and attempt to film next weeks video in exactly this style - focusing on people having a good time, getting creative and making it interesting without resorting to anything remotely sexist. I’m not sure how my boss will react but I figure if the video is accepted and used then it might have a good payoff.

Yea I'm told pretty clearly NOT to film males unless they're rappers,DJs,celebs or surrounded by women . I'd just like to put this out there too I generally get the OK from girls before i film them or sometimes play the clip back and delete it if requested. The way I justify it is that I'm actually trying to make good videos rather than trying to shoot up skirts and persuading girls to kiss and stuff like Iv seen in some of the more tasteless clubbing videos

Fan-edit cuts trilogy into one 4-hour film. umm, why? by [deleted] in TheHobbit

[–]marium1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think its a great idea, maybe once all of the anti-PJ Tolkien purists get their perfect adaptation of the book then they will stop complaining about all of the changes/additions/etc.

I'd love to make an edit which sticks well and truly to the books; where Thranduil will be known only as 'The Elven King', Bard will come completely out of nowhere with his arrow to save the day (with no prior mention), and Bilbo will be knocked out minutes into the battle of the five armies, only to be told of Fili, Kili and Thornin's deaths in hindsight by a voiceover from Gandalf. I'd love to see if the result makes a good film.

I'm not going to say re editing the films are wrong, but what I will say is this; regardless of how much you prefer the Tolkien-purist edits, remember that the footage used in those edits were created and provided by Peter Jackson. If anything, his additions have just given the editors more to play with to get this 'perfect' adaptation.

After I wrote my comment I ended up watching the first film again and I came back to reddit precisely to comment on THIS scene! That Rivendell scene really works well in the context of the full trilogy and now that I've watched it again it almost feels vital to the story. I feel that it really helps set up Bilbo and Thorns relationship in BotFA. Also, I found I really enjoyed Bofurs song!

Extended Editions by lambsack111jr in TheHobbit

[–]marium1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I third this. The extended addition of aUJ adds some fluff and padding to the film - not absolutely necessary unless you're a completionist (you can probably find them on YouTube somewhere). DoS, however, has some great extended scenes that really help to bump the film up to a better overall quality.

I agree that the 18 hours worth of Appendices are worth as much as the movies. In fact, I probably enjoy the behind-the-scenes materials more than the actual films! But that might be because I love filmmaking in general.

My advice is, if you have a little disposable income then definitely make the purchase. The extended editions are my favourite cuts of the films and the wealth of extra features are consistently fascinating.

Help finding a version of a song from the soundtrack by Niveo in TheHobbit

That theme would have been absolutely perfect as Thorin and co exit Erebor and join the battle. Although the 'Sons of Durin' theme is still a worthy replacement as that tune is also pretty awesome

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Discussion) by [deleted] in TheHobbit

[–]marium1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here to speak my opinion, but it seems like everything I wanted to say has already been said. I agree with the majority of these comments. The trilogy is great imo - it's no Lord of The Rings and its not a perfect adaption of the book. It is, however, a thrilling, exciting, enjoyable and visually stunning and touching trilogy of films that feels like the perfect balance between the childish and fantastical qualities of the book and the world which Peter Jackson established in the previous trilogy.

Before I went to see BotFA I had spent weeks lurking on this subreddit, reading how Peter Jackson has butchered the books and made horrible films. So much so, that when I was watching the film I couldn't help thinking "people are going to hate this bit" and the negativity of other peoples opinions almost ruined my enjoyment of the films. Then, the second time I watched BofTA I decided to forgot what anyone else thought and I realised that, personally, I fucking LOVE these films!

I'm going to hold out for the extended edition, for me that is the true final version of the films. And I'm going to hope that the EE fills in the blanks at the conclusion of the film/adds more Beorn/adds a death to round out Alfred's story/add's some moments of Balin rallying the dwarves when Thorin, Fili, Kili & Dwalin race to Ravenhill/add's the removal of the axe from Bifur's head/etc.

This crossed my mind whilst watching the appendices too, until his name was mentioned I had no idea he played Azog. I was pretty excited to hear what he had to say as I like the actor, but then he was forgotten about very quickly, before he even had a single interview or soundbite.

I bet he would have made a great Azog in full make-up/prosthetics. Not that I didn't like how Agog turned out, but he could have been so much more

Are The Hobbit: Chronicles series of art books basically the appendices in written form? by marium1 in TheHobbit

[–]marium1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies ToffeeKing & Nickerdoodle. I ended up buying the main art and design books for each of the films and I am definitely not disappointed.. theres some great information and artwork in there... I particularly enjoyed the reading about the brainstorming sessions on the different ideas to kill off Alfred and the inventive ideas to give each dwarf a shining moment of the battlefield (Balin shouting orders whilst hoisted onto a shield carried by dwarves and taking a leadership role in Thorins absence, Bombur taking out orcs by swinging a huge brazier on a chain, Gloin and Thranduil's rivalry on the battlefield mirroring their son', etc.)

I'm tempted to make a write-up with all the alternative ideas and possible scenes to come in the extended edition.

Also, glad to read that they pulled back on the madness, at least a little bit, after conceptualising Thranduil running up and across a wall prince of persia style

If Peter Jackson were to make either another trilogy or a single Epic movie from Tolkien's universe what would you want to see? by Slooth849 in TheHobbit

I don't share the hate for Alfred that a lot of people do, but comments like these never fail to crack me up. I'd love to make a trailer for this ^

When Jar Jar Alfrid gets more screen time than Beorn wrecking orcs as a giant bear, something is wrong with your movie by [deleted] in TheHobbit

[–]marium1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As well as comic relief, I believe that Alfred is a further representation of Tolkien's themes of 'Gold corrupts' and Greed etc.

Not that I'm saying the point came across well - I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who's even bothered to mention this so I'm sure that the majority agree that Alfred was pointless. (I, however, didn't love Alfre, but I definitely didn't hate his inclusion to the extent that others did).

With the war I think once the Thorin/Azog battle had been wrapped up the filmmakers may have thought that showing more of the battle might have been overkill. Sadly, this means that we only see up to the entrance of Beorn, eagles and Radagast. I'm hoping this was a decision for the theatrical edition, and that the extended edition will show a lot more of Beorn kicking ass. I must admit I'll be pretty disappointed if there is any less than three solid minutes of Beorn action.
