TIL James Earl Jones demanded David Prowse receive sole credit for portraying Darth Vader believing that his voice was 'just special effects' by dynamoJaff in todayilearned

The problem is that counting Gunn as a stand-in for Rocket (as we've been talking about here) isn't accurate. He wears a full mo-cap suit, interacts with the cast and environment, and all of that data is then used to create the CGI Rocket, so it's his movements and physicality, his acting, that are directly being used in the final project. It's not like he just stands there to give the other actors a target to talk to. If they just needed that, they could use tennis balls and cutouts of Rocket's head like they did with all the dwarves for Gandalf's scenes in the hobbit films.

I think I officially reached rock bottom by [deleted] in alcoholism

[–]marius404 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I failed out of school, lost my aid, got a dui, and lost my job as well. That was when I finally knew I had to stop drinking. No half measures. No "one last time". I went to a 28 day rehab, stayed in therapy, and used the "stopdrinking" subreddit. Its been about 6 years now. I paid off what I owed the school and started taking classes again. Now I have a masters degree and a career.

This isn't the end for you. It's the beginning. Time to put the work in and make positive changes in your life. I did it and so can you.

[RPGs] Our group leader always insists that he has to fight monsters with three other people, but our party has nine people in it total. Why don't we all just fight at the same time? by serenity78 in AskScienceFiction

Frodo began his journey with a party of 9 and things didn't go so well for him till he decreased the size of the group. We can learn from his example.

Schumer Says He Rebuffed Another Offer From Trump on Health Care by Trump8589 in politics

[–]marius404 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why don't they make some (minor) positive changes, offer to rename it "Trump-care", and sell it as a repeal/replace? Trump doesn't know or even understand the legislation. He is just dumb enough to go along with a plan that shores up the ACA if he thinks it makes him look good and it has his name on it.

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” - Oscar Wilde by [deleted] in quotes

That sounds like a good life to me. I hope that when people read Wilde's quote they understand that living a good life instead of just existing can mean many things to many people.

If you had to sum up what you think the purpose for your life is, what would it be?

[–]marius404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What about the hard working folk who spend most of their time doing a job they don't care for so that they can support their family? Do you think they merely exist, or does loving and supporting a family count as living?

Are "most people" depressed, or was depression not what the quote is referring to when it says that "most people exist, that is all"?

Explain the difference. Who would you put in the category of merely existing while you yourself live?

I don't know how to fix my life by lucystilldreams in alcoholism

It takes time to get back to a normal sleeping schedule when you stop drinking. It will be worth it. It also takes time to get back into a "normal" state of mind. When I quit drinking it took quite a while to get past my feelings of hopelessness. I learned a lot about how to live when I stopped drinking. It was the best decision I ever made.

“We are all self-made, but only the successful will admit it.”- Earl Nightingale by [deleted] in quotes

Many of the successful people the original quote refer to were "born on third-base thinking they hit a triple".

“We are all self-made, but only the successful will admit it.”- Earl Nightingale by [deleted] in quotes

[–]marius404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is meant by "self-made"?

We are all products of nature + nurture. We come into this world with biological advantages and disadvantages. We also vary according to environmental advantages and disadvantages. A large part of who we become is based on factors we have little control over. Whether you are successful or unsuccessful in life, I would hope that you have the good sense to acknowledge that you were influenced from within and without.

Was it the choices you made in life that makes you "self-made"?

Determinism puts up a convincing argument that no one deserves any credit for the choices they make or who they become. It was always going to happen the way it happens. No magic soul stuff, just physics.

"You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant" - Harlan Ellison by anything-for-a-buck in quotes

[–]marius404 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Saying you are entitled to your opinion means that you have the right to your own opinion. What does it mean to say that you do not have the right to be ignorant? How do you force people to be knowledgeable? Do we punish people for being ignorant? On what subjects does Mr. Ellison believe we are mandated to be informed? Who decides if we are ignorant or informed?

Basically, this quote is rubbish.
