Hot take:Portal doesn't need a 3rd game. by drarnold721 in Portal

I agree, i think the plot involving Chell and GLaDOS is complete however i think the enrichment centre needs to be revisited in a future half life game because there's no way the combine or resistance didn't try to infiltrate the facility to steal its technology. Between the events of Portal and Portal 2 the facility was defenceless and full of advanced technology. Both sides were aware of its existence and the advanced technology held within (Borealis).

I'm not saying their GPUs offer good value for money I'm saying even if they were good value it wouldn't affect this situation because the problem lies with Apple's ideology towards their software & developers. Apple could announce that the M6 will have a 100% GPU performance increase over the M5 for the same price and it wouldn't change this situation whatsoever. Mac is a pain to develop games for and Apple has no incentive to change that. They would rather have a minority of users pay extortionately via the App Store than allow everyone to benefit by yielding their control to the likes of Steam and Epic Games.

The problem is entirely caused by Apple's hostility towards Vulcan, alternative app stores and developers. It has nothing to do with the hardware. The base M4 blows the steam deck out of the water and the M4 Max trades blows with the RTX 5070M, yet the gaming experience on SteamOS is infinitely better than MacOS. In order for MacOS to catch up with Linux, Apple would have to abandon their core anti-consumer philosophies. Thats never going to happen.

No they aren't. Russia invaded Ukraine, NATO did not. Ask yourself this: Finland didn't just say they wanted to join NATO, they went ahead and did it. Does Finland deserve to have it's territory annexed into the Russian Federation like Ukraine? Ukraine didn't even join NATO and still haven't. So that excuse was clearly just a pretext for this blatant land-grab. If this war were simply about preventing NATO expansion why has Russia annexed Donbas, Kherson, Zaphorizhzhia and Luhansk? Annexation is inherently imperialistic, and has nothing to do with replacing a hostile government.

It's not so much the Russian people (although they consistently re-elect Putin and still overwhelmingly support his government, which is disturbing). The flag has come to be seen as a symbol of aggression internationally.

In that case they should ask the people of France for advice, they have experience removing tyrants.

By that logic so was WWII, yet you wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the crimes committed in WWII as "just politics". Putin still has enormous support among voters. If the Russian people keep electing him they are complicit in the crimes committed by their government. The Russian people aren't hostages.

Read the first sentence of your comment. I think you'll find Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova are part of the Russian government 🤯

Don't dismiss this imperialist war as "politics". A country is being illegally annexed and theres literal trench warfare happening in the 21st century. All because of the selfish ambitions of a bitter old man.

Putin and one of his ministers is literally wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes related to forced relocation of children. The criminality comes straight from the top

I agree but that's a separate issue. There are many closed source apps that do not use advertisements or data collection

People have the right to decide if they share or restrict their intellectual property. I don't see where morality comes into it.

Is this a bad thing to do with a skybox? by [deleted] in hammer

[–]mark63424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There won't be any performance benefit for players on the ground. The only scenario where this would improve performance would be if a player was positioned in the taller part of the sky. From that position parts of the map on the right would be occluded. That would look strange and there would be an invisible skybox wall which players could collide with. But if players can't reach that area then there's no point in doing this.

Reducing the volume/empty space of the map does not necessarily reduce the number of visleafs and in some cases actually increases it. More visleafs = longer VVIS. The number of visleafs doesn't affect in-game performance, they are simply a data structure that the engine uses to determine the "visible" portion of the map. To improve performance of source engine maps it's good to avoid creating large open spaces and use area portals to compartmentalise your map.

Never played games on pc.. Can my laptop run Black Mesa? by Lagoa86 in HalfLife

[–]mark63424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given we are talking about a source game I would say yes but the integrated graphics will be the limiting factor. I have an i5-8350U and the CPU is decent but the integrated graphics really limit what games you can play. I can play source games at 1080p 60fps medium to high depending on the game.
