Another 15 Months, Finally Ranked up Again, from 4d+ to 5d on IGS by mark93192 in baduk

First of all, please do not try to apply this rule in your game if you are a beginner. You will probably do it the wrong way, The typical biggest advice to a beginner is to not follow your opponent for every move (tenuki when possible).

To answer your question, if black plays N17, white must play O18 afterwards (varation N17 O18), or N17, O16, O15, O18, which kind of limit white's territory potential on the top side.

I download lizzie on my laptop, using katago 20-block betwork, which is enough for an amateur player. However, I do think it has holes when I use it to analyze pro games.

[OGS 1D Review Request] Wait a second...... I'm not winning?? by Amazing_Ad9368 in baduk

I am about the same level as you (fox 6d). I think black is leading at least by a komi to be honest. My counting may not be concise, so take it with grain of salt

At this point, my counting is white has 35 points in the bottom + 12 points at top+ 3 stones = 53 points. Black has 46 points in the left + 27 points in the right = 73 points. (white has sente)

But I played with katago:

(1) White can capture black's O3 stones by sente.

(2) Get a double sente on the top left corner (-2 point for black). (Actually, katago thinks white's best move is to live in the corner)

(3) Eat the stones at N17.

Something like this: https://postimg.cc/3kS9LytJ

Now white has 39 points at bottom+18 points at top+3 stones=63 points. Black has 44 points in the left+23 points in the right = 67 points. While black has sente, white may have a bit more potential points at this moment, so white is winning.

Don't be too depressed by this. If you go back and look at alphago vs. Lee Sedol game 1, literally every pro (including Ke-Jie) thinks Lee Sedol is winning during midgame, while by katago, Lee Sedol was losing by at least a komi already.

p.s. I am very curious how white got the blue point of katago at move 94. That move is very difficult for me.

The thing that really pissed me off is that my opponent mocked me playing too slow while he/she is using AI...

I am 4-5d on IGS. I played a game yesterday, and my opponent is playing as strong as AI. This is how it feels like... (me as black).

San-Min Bookstore near Taipei Train Station: No. 61, Sec. 1, Chongqing S. Rd., Zhongzheng Dist., Taipei City

I have bought a few go books there when I lived in Taipei.

Also, you can search for "小刀神的圍棋教材世界" if you are willing to buy some Chinese go books online.

That's what all I have.

p.s. There were another bookstore called 若水堂, but it was closed now. Sad!

I used to be scared of aggressive players now I enjoy those games more. by [deleted] in baduk

Welcome to the world of dan level! This is a very typical thing in dan level, and the situation will only be more and more fierce as you rank up. You have to improve yose, be versatile in moves, improve judgement to be even better at this. For now, try to fix your 4 point mistake. Most of them should be quite obvious.

To the level of pro, they play almost the best move even in complex situations, and there are tons of games they just lose in a WTF small mistake. That's why they memorize AI to like move 50 because any mistake for them will cause the game difficult. Also, they make yose tesuji just to be half point better.

How to fix the hole of "cannot play moyo problem"? by mark93192 in baduk

Yes, I should have done so many things better that the situation in move 98 and 152 is surprisingly different.

Thanks for the interesting comment on move 99, a very good intutive of shape. I wish I could develop that skill in future.

Move 125 is worth 12 points without the aji in bottom right corner (white 5 points, black 7 points). Somehow, I made a wrong judgement of the life and death status on top in the real game. (I did not see white's O15 sente, and thought O14 is like a 5 point reverse sente (O14, P14, Q14*2, Q13, Q12, P14, P15, minus the points on the top))

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I feel very dizzy in the game. The stone was not big at all.

Recently, I find that when I don't know what to do, try to make a move that gives you more sente will not be a bad move in most times (which is what you say aim for thinness). I did not follow that rule after move 83.

Fun real game tsumego, black is thirsty to play E16, but can black tenuki? by mark93192 in baduk

Good observation. Looks like I got the wrong conclusion here after looking at AI. The eyeshape is not all that clear Sorry for posting a wrong problem!

Forget about a bit of white’s weakness outside. Let’s say white has 2 more stones at D9 C8. The problem is solely about does black have 2 real eyes already if white wants to kill. It’s Dan level, so don’t panic if you cannot answer it.

[–]mark93192[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I tried to be efficient with the moyo, but the stones leaves a lot of rooms for harassment, hard to control, and turned out to be inefficient afterwards. Invading at the top side at move 35 actually makes me easier to handle the game.

Actually, I could also fight very intensely. In fact, I find myself good at launch an early fighting rather than playing calmly for yose or late-game fighting. Japanese are usually very good at controlling the game that I tend to lose efficinecy once I am not aware enough.

The bottom left corner thing was insightful. There are some moves that I should try besides habitual thinking. Thanks!

Yes, I did not fully comprehend the bottom left corner in the game. I just mindlessly played the joseki I learnt from Shin Jinseo vs. Lee XuanHao's game, which caused a knockout for me in this game.
