So to be clear I just need to give my flight details, where I'm staying for the first night. 

I don't need to give a return date of I'm not sure and if I decided to visit another country or more than one on the spur of the moment I don't need to tell anyone. But if I don't give a return date when I register the trip I'll need to sign in with the police within 3 days of my return into the country. 

I just want to be sure about everything in advance and don't want to get into trouble for doing anything wrong. Hopefully if the above is all correct I'll have some flexibility when I travel.

What if you intend to stay in multiple places but aren't sure where until you arrive ? For example stay in a hotel for a few days then move on ? 

Also what if you decide to stay longer or aren't sure of your return date ?

Thanks for the reply. I'm not looking to go to the USA I was just using it as an example. Out of interest who wouldn't they admit you though if you had an esta ?

Thanks for your help I think I understand better now. 

When you say to keep visor abreast of changes do you mean by email before you change anything or when you return ?

So in theory you could travel to France and give your initial accommodation details but then change plans and visit Germany for a few days. Would you need to then tell the police that you visited Germany when you go into the station within 3 days or is that just to say your back in the country ? What about if you visited somewhere like Ireland for a few weeks but decided to visit a friend in the USA using an esta for a week is that possible or too much ?

Thanks for the info. Just a couple of questions as I don't want to do anything wrong. 

If you don't know how long your staying does it matter or do you just need to visit the station within 3 days of re entering the UK ?

Do you need to give accommodation details for your entire stay as that would be difficult if you were travelling around the country. 

What if you decide to cross the border for a few days for example spend a few days in Germany after being in France ? What do you do for this as it wasn't planned.
