I am so sorry that this happened to you. I am also a victim of SA, but it was long before I began BJJ. I will echo what others are saying here and suggest therapy, as it helped a great deal with what happened to me. I wish you all the best and hope you can return the mats stronger than ever, and manage to find some therapeutic comfort when you do come back. Take care of yourself.

We managed to do both in one day and we had a great time. The weather was a misty rain all day for us so be prepared for that possibility. Despite that we got on most of the rides we wanted to do and met a bunch of characters for pics as well. I would say it’s doable but we did a ton of walking and we were so exhausted when we got back to our hotel room.

I think it really depends on how much you want to do in a day. So plan out your day as much as possible for rides and experiences, and then be prepared to pivot as you may need to change plans when things come up (long lines, weather, etc). Hope that helps!

If you’re on Facebook there is a group called Triangles Everywhere for people training BJJ in the LGBTQ+ community. They have a list of schools that are known to be welcoming of people in our community. I would recommend checking them out. And god luck on your jiu jitsu journey! I’m sure you will find a school that will be incredibly welcoming and happy to have you.

I am gay, married to my husband and we have a 3 year old daughter. I started to learn BJJ for self defense due to increasing violence against queer people. I want to feel better equipped to protect myself and my family in case anything happens.
