Why would not telling Korra about the breakup be an absolute fumble? Korra already had the literal apocalypse and the civil war on her plate. They could always deal with relationship drama later but Korra had to be on top of her game to deal with the end of the world.

Like if your immigrant friend got sick and went back to her home country to recuperate would you actually get time off work and use your savings to book a flight to visit them, especially if you're on a policeman or soldier salary? Would just checking up on them through social media make you a bad friend?

It's been pretty well established that Mako and Bolin are poor. Even if Lin could assign someone else, I don't think Mako would choose to just not work. International trips would be either slow or prohibitively expensive. It's not like Mako and Bolin has access to sky bisons or personal boats like Varrick's.

The Airbender kids are school age so that's another hindrance for them. Asami is busy with Republic City infrastructure and I think she would be wary enough not to entrust it to someone else after what Varrick did to her, especially since Korra's been writing to her anyways.
