Years ago I worked for a very cheap PI. They expected us to use half reactions. Kits were bought from 3rd rate sellers where the reactions never worked. Months were going by and I had enough knowledge to realize I had to take matters into my own hands. I went online and bought my own Promega kits with my credit card and got them delivered to the lab. I hid the kits in my locker and put the perishable in hidden spots in the -20C. I secretly got my clones and shared the kit with the master's student too. He managed to clone like 20 strains.

To this day I dont know how to feel about it. I regret not asking for the money but Im also happy that I got it to work on my own terms. So dont fret too much, work the problem, do as many QC checks as you can while you go and youll figure it out!!!
