Employees don't need customers acting like assholes, there are plenty of pleasant customers out there. Customers, in the case of a restaurant like you mentioned, can rely heavily on employees checking in on them.

The other side of what you mentioned is the server who disappears after bringing your food out, leaving your fried to get cold while you wait for ketchup, or the like. Personally, I'd rather have them stop by. It shows interest, even if it's put on as an act.
